I've always preferred knives over anything. Easiest to conceal, easiest to wield (in my eyes), and a great projectile weapon when you know how to throw them. Though I've been known to use rapiers, katanas, revolvers...

Katanas here, all the way...I mess around with the different variations of the blade, but I prefer Tachis and O-dachis.
Well, one exception; Scythes. They're interesting to weild, and are fun to Rp with.

I use a different weapon nearly everytime I make a character. And as often my own original peices as real weapons.

Katanas. Especially the shuriken type ones...
And needles. Small, light, and deadly if you hit the right nerve spot... ninja

I use a Katana RARELY because of how cliche and gay it is, but when you use iaido its all good. Shurkiens and any projectile weapons fail 100% of the time, never use projectile, they're weak, usless and have a very low chance of contact, and even if they do strike they dont do much.
Needles and s**t like that, rarely hit and usually dont have enough strenght and or speed to actually do damage to someone who is more physicaly built.
Advice, dont use em.

Advice, use what you have. 二刀流 (Two blade attack stance) works especially well with Iaido, if you can use the blades to your advantage. Needles and Projectiles may not work for damage, but it also serves as a possible use for distractions.

Ertai, I actually agree with you on this point. Katanas are sadly over-used and get way too belittled because of this.
They're a good strong weapon, though. And, if you're not afraid to fantasize with 'em a bit, they can be turned to interesting ends. (i.e.: Ryuujin, my character's primary weapon.)

Katana's aren't overused -- they're overused by n00bs who hack and slash at things while ruining the beauty of the sword itself. Expertly crafted and well made, katanas were one of the finest weapons in history, rivaling the Chinese counterpart of the sword.
