It got your brain working well enough to break you free, so yes, it was quite necessary. That doesn't solve the problem of just what the hezz to do with this, though.

Technically, they don't "take" souls. They collect souls. The vast majority of the time, demons only bother people that they already have some sort of claim to. It's people who go out of their way to look for the demons. *Scowls at the imp in the ball.*
