The U.S. is set to have direct talks with Iran on its nuclear program, according to President Donald Trump, although Tehran has maintained that the discussions in Oman would be indirect.

"We're having direct talks with Iran, and they've started," Trump told reporters after meeting with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. "It'll go on Saturday… We'll see what can happen."

"Iran cannot have a nuclear weapon, and if the talks aren't successful, I actually think it'll be a very bad day for Iran," Trump warned. Last month, he threatened Iran with bombing and secondary tariffs if no nuclear deal was reached.

"Iran and the U.S. will meet in Oman on Saturday for indirect high-level talks," Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said. "It is as much an opportunity as it is a test. The ball is in America's court."

According to Nour News, a media outlet affiliated with Iran's security council, Trump's statements about direct talks should be viewed as a "psychological operation aimed at influencing public opinion."

While Washington has long accused Iran of developing nuclear weapons, Tehran insists that its nuclear program is for civilian energy purposes.

Trump in 2018 pulled the U.S. from an Obama-era deal that limited Iran's nuclear activities, and reimposed sanctions. Since then, Iran has significantly ramped up enrichment of uranium to levels near weapons-grade.

After taking office this year, Trump has adopted a tougher stance on Iran. He has tightened sanctions on Iranian oil exports and cleared military strikes on Yemen, targeting Houthi rebels said to be backed by Tehran.

Trump claims U.S. having 'direct' nuclear talks with Iran

The U.S. is set to have direct talks with Iran on its nuclear program, according to President Donald Trump, although Tehran has maintained that the discussions in Oman would be indirect.

"We're having direct talks with Iran, and they've started," Trump told reporters after meeting with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. "It'll go on Saturday… We'll see what can happen."

"Iran cannot have a nuclear weapon, and if the talks aren't successful, I actually think it'll be a very bad day for Iran," Trump warned. Last month, he threatened Iran with bombing and secondary tariffs if no nuclear deal was reached.

"Iran and the U.S. will meet in Oman on Saturday for indirect high-level talks," Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said. "It is as much an opportunity as it is a test. The ball is in America's court."

According to Nour News, a media outlet affiliated with Iran's security council, Trump's statements about direct talks should be viewed as a "psychological operation aimed at influencing public opinion."

While Washington has long accused Iran of developing nuclear weapons, Tehran insists that its nuclear program is for civilian energy purposes.

Trump in 2018 pulled the U.S. from an Obama-era deal that limited Iran's nuclear activities, and reimposed sanctions. Since then, Iran has significantly ramped up enrichment of uranium to levels near weapons-grade.

After taking office this year, Trump has adopted a tougher stance on Iran. He has tightened sanctions on Iranian oil exports and cleared military strikes on Yemen, targeting Houthi rebels said to be backed by Tehran.
