Maia was surprised. Toby was really rather old, wasn't he? He didn't look it, though. She gave him a smile and leaned back in her chair. "Maybe I can bring you some pasta later," she said. And she'd make sure he ate it, too!

"Oh, uh. You don't have to worry about me," Toby assured her. You didn't want much in your stomach during the change, and after he'd need a lot more than one serving of pasta.

Just then his computer lit up with an alert. A call from outside.

"It was nice seeing you two. Thanks for the snack. I'll see you later?" Already he was putting his headset back on and adjusting the microphone.

It was almost dark when Maia returned to where Toby was. She had a plate full of pasta for him. "Toby I brought you some dinner," She said. She offered him a flashed him a smile. "I tried it, it's good! It's not really as good as yours but Seamus liked it!"

The door had been closed the second time as well, but now there was nobody else in the room. Dari sat at Toby's station and turned to look at Maia as she entered. His expression was unreadable.

Toby meanwhile seemed a bit pale, perhaps a bit sweaty. He had just unhooked his watch and was tossing it aside. He looked surprised when Maia entered, almost startled.

"Maia, you shouldn't be here." He was undoing his tie with urgency.

Toby looked ill. Maia noticed that immediately. She made to move towards him, Maybe to envelope him in a hug, maybe insist he leave and get some ice cream, he looked like he might have a fever. Instead of doing either, she hesitated and took a step backwards towards the door. "Why?" She asked.

It was time. Toby's aspiration picked up the pace. He was unbuttoning his shirt as quickly as possible. There wasn't time to explain. Maia was going to bear witness.

"Something is going to happen that might be very upsetting. I need you to stay calm and stand back, okay?" His shirt on the floor, followed by an undershirt. He was slightly behind, he'd been stuck on a call.

Suddenly his face was turning red. His blood pressure was rising. For a moment his eyes rolled back and then he caught himself and started on his pants.

"I need you to not scream."

Something was going to happen that might be upsetting? Was Toby dying? Was that why he looked so ill? But she had to stay calm? How was she supposed to stay calm if the guy she liked was dying? She backed up as instructed, looking to Dari.

Something was very, very wrong. She bit her lip to keep herself from screaming. Toby was obviously in pain and this wasn't okay!

The burning started about the same time the cramping did. It felt as if every inch of his skin was on fire while the rest of him was clenching, preparing for what was to come. It didn't matter how many times you'd done it. You never got used to it.

Then came the wrenching. Muscles tore with wild abandon. Bones snapped audibly and bent into place. His legs had to change, had to go digitigrade. His arms needed to lengthen. Finger thickened, the musculature of his torso began to twist, bulk, grow.

It was a crippling pain. Toby still had one leg in his pants when he pitched forward onto all fours. He was holding back, keeping from screaming the best he could without literally biting his tongue. That would have been rather unpleasant, considering his teeth were thickening, lengthening, changing shape. The burning was the sprouting hairs, some of which were simply normal body hair that lengthened, others bursting through flesh freshly. That was the least of the pain.

It felt as if someone had smashed his face in and shattered every bone. A muzzle had to grow from a normal human visage and saliva began to pool and drip from Toby's mouth. His face was red, contorted, the tendons in his neck standing out as he grew and grew. His face began to lengthened and then he could hold back no more, he let out a scream that morphed with his burning throat to an inhuman yowl. His pants tore and fell. The band of his underwear snapped at the immense stretching. He might have been embarrassed were he not crippled with agony. His hands clawed at the rug, apparently stuck. His face was a rictus.

Then it was over. It only took about twelve seconds to go from human to were form. Toby didn't bother to move. He lay on the floor, panting heavily. All of a sudden Toby was a beast, a wolf-man with fur the color of the agent's hair. He was bipedal but had the bent ankles of a canine. His fingers were thickened and clawed with pink pads. His head was canine, ears enormous and pointed, snout heaving with each breath. He was enormous, well over six feet tall and perhaps even more than seven. His claws were slightly bloodied, as were his teeth.

Throughout the entire endeavor, Dari had been speaking words here and there into the microphone that stuck out from the headset around his neck. Now, finally, his words were clear. "Transformation complete. ... Roger."

Toby blinked as the pain began to ebb away. His eyes were red in places, blood vessels having burst from the strain, but they were still the same blue. He began to push himself up on enormous hands, giving one animal grunt of exertion. His limbs always felt a bit jelly-like after all that.

Maia hadn't screamed; but she had moved as close to the door with her hands over her ears and her eyes tightly shut. No, No, No. She understood all the jokes now; all the hints they'd made to his condition. But this! The poor guy was tortured once a month! She hated it. Why couldn't he have had an easier time of it? Why couldn't it be like her own transformation?

The screaming stopped. She opened an eye. She immediately regretted it. Poor Toby. No wonder he had to stay at work all night.

She moved towards him, reaching to take his hand. "Are you okay now?" she asked.

Now was the time to be embarrassed. He was naked. No more so than in a bathing suit purely for the difference in anatomy, but naked nonetheless. Maia had just seen him at his most vulnerable. She wasn't supposed to be here. Someone somewhere had dropped the ball, lost track of time, something. His chest was heaving and he looked down to Maia, just regarding her calmly. There was always that part of him that screamed to rend flesh and consume, but the trick was learning to disobey. He did not move to take Maia's hand.

"He can't talk," Dari said, finally turning to the selkie, "He's alright. The worst is over."

Toby sniffed and nodded. His normally heightened senses were tenfold now. It was a whole new world. God, but he still felt weak.

Maia looked to Dari. How could Dari take this so calmly? But maybe he'd grown used to the routine. She didn't think she'd ever be able to stand those screams, seeing Toby in so much pain. She sighed and sat in the chair she'd occupied earlier. "At least eat," she suggested, offering the dish to Toby.

"You could've warned me," she said. "I could've brought ice cream for you." Or not come in at all. But it seemed Toby was a well mannered werewolf. He hadn't eaten her yet.

Toby lifted a hand--paw? to refuse the food. He felt a bit sick still. At least it wasn't raw meat, right? Hah. He rolled is lips over his teeth and sucked off the blood. It was true, words were beyond him. He was still vulnerable on the inside, beyond the massive, hulking weapon of furry slaughter.

Little did Maia know that this had been one of the better ones. Dari wasn't sure why. The new audience member? He'd seen Toby in tears. He'd heard him shrieking. He probably hadn't wanted to scare Maia. Wasn't this just perfect, though? Toby would never willfully offer up his weaknesses even if he was interested in Maia as well, and Dari was pretty sure he was.

"Generally speaking, should you see someone begin transformation you should run, hide... anything but this," Dari explained. "Toby has been through several years of training and therapy to... not kill us. We have two men downstairs in the same position, and they require restraints until sunrise."

Maia set the plate down, and looked to Dari. She frowned slightly. "I knew Toby wouldn't hurt me," she said. Well. Hoped. She was more concerned about Toby's wellbeing at the moment. "Oh. Don't worry. If I met another transforming werewolf I'd run for my life. ...But I'd rather just come here every full moon, just in case."

She looked back at Toby. "You'll eat later, then?"

Dari decided to not mention that the majority of local werewolves were here now and Maia would be safer back at Toby's house where there were exactly none. She had feelings for the man and had just watched him go through a horrible experience. She was allowed to be irrational.

Toby nodded. This would be most of their communication for the next several hours. He could write to others but Maia was still learning. He didn't want to make her feel stupid.

Dari turned back to the computer and flicked through a few security cameras, nodded, and returned to his work, taking part in conversations the others could only hear one side of. It was the skeleton crew now until the morning when the whole world had gone through its cycle.

Toby thought, does my breath smell? Dogs' always did, but their diets were vastly different and he'd brushed this morning. He mustn't smell of much of anything. Curiously he sniffed an arm. Nah, he couldn't be objective about his own smell. Didn't he always smell like this?

Finally feeling relatively stable, he went to retrieve a little whiteboard from the desk and the marker along with it. He wrote a message in a more unstable hand than usual.

I'm sorry you had to see that

He held it up for Maia to read, to sound of if need be.

Maia read what Toby wrote on the whiteboard. She shook her head. It'd been her fault, she'd come in without asking. "Don't worry about It," she assured him. "I'm just glad you're alright." So he could write. She'd known he could understand, but she figured it'd been on a Seamus level.

Toby was still Toby. Just a furry Toby. "I was more worried about you. I wish you could transform like I do."
