It’s tail feather gleaming in the faint sunlight filtering through, a sure prize for anyone wanting to make a few feather accessories for a price.
“Watch I’ll be able to get the feathers this time.” An eager look on his face as the other snorts in return.
“Don’t dare, you have missed the last two times and I don’t want to waste any more time on this. I’ll do it.”
Words on deaf ears, he had sprung forward leaving her glaring behind and with a flash of feathers their prey was gone. Another two hours wasted.
“That’s it,” she hissed under her breath turning around not giving chase of the two. “Enough of others I am hunting alone from now on.”

Eyes watched the rise of the stream as it swallowed both the fish and its hunter, a snake that couldn't swim, disappearing beneath the current until they were both lost. A lesson learned; don't get in above your head.
It wasn't the first thing that A Watery Grave said, but it was the first thing seen and the first thought understood.

There was more to the thrill of hunting than catching the prey, it was returning first in her tribe as the other dragged in slowly afterwards, glares beneath their gaze. The first time she had returned one of the older hunters had questioned it, a few hunts later he challenged her for her swiftness. Biting back her annoyance, hatred, the shame burning her face at his false accusations she went on the next hunt to prove him wrong again. When he had enough he challenged her, a race against the time itself, first one to bring prey back would concede to the other. It meant that if she lost there would be shame marking her forever, she would be considered a liar, a cheat and worse of her her skills devalued. She agreed to the challenged, her heart thrumming through her chest as every second passed by in her mind. Tracked, hunted, killed, and it brought back to the her tribe, she watched as faces lit up at her returned. She had, as always, arrived first.
