I'm not even fully through reading the new RP posts and I already see I didn't get a chance for Laura to react to meeting Blikk during lunch, and Jag's already come and gone.
I understand the whole " get dragged along so you don't hold anyone up " but I wasn't expecting it to be so quick... confused

I just did the math. Our Ion Cannon has a max range of 5 light minutes. Thats 89,937,737.4 kilometers.

Normally I'd be impressed, but this is star wars.

The main guns on a Venator SD can hit a target at 10 light minutes.

He was eager to post and got carried away without thinking about the other Roleplayers. Forgive this one?

Cale Darksun The main guns on a Venator SD can hit a target at 10 light minutes. ??? You're kidding... I hope you're kidding, because that seems ridiculously far for a starship gun to be able to reach. Seriously.

Regardless, thats whats listed on the entry given in Wookieepedia.

Okay let me put it this way. Thats around 1.8 AUs. Or 1.8x the distance from the earth to the sun.
Seems like Curtis Saxton is having fun with numbers again.

Stellar, I went and did the research on the units of measurement involved. I know what an AU is. Trust me, I'm skeptical of that too but this is assuming we pump full power into the gun and fired. We don't know how much actual damage the beam would possess at that range. I didnt say Maximum effective striking range. I said Max range.

Eh, it's just another part of the ongoing Star Trek vs Star Wars fight. Saxton is probably trying to beat Star Treks canon range for weapons of 300,000 km.
I can give you a rough estimate of the power level of something hitting that far out thanks to my knowledge of physics... it's actually quite funny.
Lasers follow the inverse square law for damage output anyway so you end up 0.000000000000001% of the energy remaining to do damage to the target. This would take the damage from a turbolaser from being a mind blowing 16,000 Terajoules, to a pitiful 0.02 joules. Which is less energy then I have here being directed at me by my computer monitor.
Course, this is all ridiculously dumb for all manner of reasons to discuss, and the main reason I'm doing it is because I'm bored and have nothing better to do.

Same problem, half the distance means a 4 fold increase in damage, but still that sucks balls, not enough energy there to give my hair static cling.
That is of course assuming star wars weapons traveled at the speed of light (They don't). If we accept the idea that its a bolt of ionized and superheated gas the damage falloff gets worse, because if you ionize gas it tries to get away from its fellow ionized gas molecules, so bolts very rapidly loose cohesion.
I'm bored. Too ST-v-SW.net!
