Nazuki's eyes glinted and she got an idea. Pointing at the top of the dense, forested hill, she said:"Why don't we race to the top of the hill? We can use ninjutsu to help us get there, and maybe to stop the other from getting there..." This was a pretty good idea, and Nazuki sort of had a plan already.
Keeping an eye on the hill, Nazuki didn't quite wait for the girl's response. It wouldn't be too great of an advantage for the girl if Nazuki started first since Nazuki WAS just a beginner.
Nazuki concentrated and then started shedding her skin, leaving two gashes in her back unhardened to alow chakra to flow through. And the chakra started ebbing out slowly until they formed four blurry, azure wings on her back. And with that, Nazuki took off to the top of the hill.

Tamao
Tamao's head whipped around a little faster than she might have planned, that idea had been totally out of left field. A race? That was a pretty interesting idea. And they could use ninjutsu to either help or hinder? That made things very interesting, very interesting indeed. Why, the ideas were endless! With a start, Tamao noticed Nazuki had already started, and was a decent distance up the hill, somehow flying with pretty chakra wings. She exclaimed that that wasn't fair, and tried to catch up. She wasn't a very fast runner, despite the training she'd endured at the academy, so she wasn't making up the distance too fast. (9 of ? )
She tried to think fo what would work good to make her opponent stop, and came up with an idea. Doing some handseals, she saw the blossoms on some of the trees were pretty close to Nazuki. As she performed the technique, she called out it's name. Hikari Fukou! The petals of the flowers blew towards Nazuki on an unfelt wind, before shattering into hundreds of glowing, dazzling motes. They wouldn't have gotten clsoe enough to really blind her, but they would leave spots in her eyes for a moment, maybe enough for Tamao to catch up. She didn't wait to see how Nazuki fared, instead she tried her best to take advantage of a hopeful chance, and race ahead. (10 of ? )

Nazuki saw the flowers drifting unnaturally towards her and knew this must be some sort of intervention because Tamao called out the name of a skill she just performed. However, she didn't expect that the flowers would form dazzling shards of light that totally obscured her vision. Screwing her eyes shut, Nazuki rose higher and out of the field of flowers and flew towards the hill. If she flies lower she might bump into tree branches due to the flowers shining in her eyes.
Nazuki took out a nephrite jade flute and started playing an entrancing tune, and it became a genjutsu as she put her chakra into it. If Tamao was hearing the song right now, she would see the trees start closing in and moving around, which would distort her judgement of where the hill was.

Tamao
Tamao had tried to gain some distance, hoping to gain a slight lead from Nazuki's distraction, but the girl was a quicker adapter than she thought. She risked a glance behind her as she ran, and saw the girl flying higher to miss the trees. She pulled something out of a pocket, or perhaps a sleeve, and put it to her lips. Tamao didn't know what it was at first, but was pretty sure it wouldn't be good. She was right. As she began to hear the sounds of the flute, she recognized what was probably happening, a sound-based attack. It was Hidden Sound, after all. But she didn't know what form the attack would take, if it would be a ninjutsu or a genjutsu. (11 of ? )
She tried to ignore it, dodging through the trees as fast as she could. But something odd happened. She blinked, wondering if her eyes had deceived her, the trees had seemed to be moving. Not directly in front of her, but out of the corners of her eyes she could see them shifting around. Whenever she turned her head, they seemed to stand still, yet when her head returned to look back, they had changed positions. She was starting to put two and two together, when her train fo thought got derailed, forcibly. She ran right into a tree. Crashing loudly, she fell flat on her back, dazed. She hadn't seriously hurt herself, but she had definitely felt that one. (12 of ? )

Nazuki looked back and saw Tamao crash into a tree...Perhaps this was taking the competition a bit far? But she appeared to be alright. Nazuki drew another breath and continued the melody, flying towards the top of the hill. It was hard to concentrate on flying when one is playing the flute and manipulating chakra at the same time, so Nazuki flew a bit slower to avoid losing control of the technique or her flight path.
If anything, using ninjutsu is quite exciting, requiring skill, concentration, and using your circumstances. Nazuki wondered what she would do if Tamao actually broke out of the genjutsu, she had only learnt a few techniques from her clan and some supplemntary jutsu. The only factor aiding her was the speed of her flying.

Tamao
Tamao still felt dazed, but shook herself alert. The trees were still lurching, but she knew that was more because of the genjutsu than anything. She could probably break free if she really tried, but it'd take a lot of work, and time she didn't have. She saw Nazuki still moving ahead, and did her best to move forward herself. Instead of keeping her arms ahead of her to protect herself from the trees, instead she was doing hand seals. Once the last seal finished, dozens of black arms erupted from the ground and trees, doing their best to grab Nazuki. This was the Hell's Hands technique, if they caught her, the race was over. The arms could only be broken, not dispelled, so if Nazuki was caught, she'd lose the race, as simple as that. (13 of ? )

(ain't that giving away too much? eek ) Nazuki was trying to keep the genjutsu going when several black hands arose from the shadows of the vegetation and reached towards her. The technique seemed very familiar, yet she couldn't pin down where she'd last seen it. But it was obvious what they do...hands are used fro grabbing, and it would be pretty stupid if they didn't grab her.
Nazuki stopped playing the flute and extended another pair of wings from her back. If the hands were made of shadow, then the light from her wings would destroy them. Nazuki lengthened the wings to swat at the hands. If they weren't shadow, then she would have no other plan...

Tamao
The arms weren't made of shadow, they were most definitely physical. The light didn't seem to do anything, with the possible exception of illuminating their target. Possible, but not a certainty, since the arms didn't have eyes of their own. Tamao couldn't afford to waste any more time seeing how Nazuki fared, so she turned and ran towards the top of the hill, hoping the arms would at least distract Nazuki enough to take care of the genjutsu. Finally, the trees seemed to stop moving, and she couldn't hear the music anymore. That had done it! Now with a clear path, she made a beeline for the top of the hill. It'd still take her a while to get there, though. The trees were thick enough that she had to dodge and turn while running, losing precious momentum. (14 of ? )

The hands surged forward and took ahold of her wings, yanking her down. Nazuki bit her lips and then disintegrated her extended wings, taking a steep dive to the floor and dropping safely to the ground. The hands were still coming, so it was time to go somewhere where they can't reach. Making a set of handseals, Nazuki used antlion technique, dubmerging herself under the ground and travelling that way. She could travel just as fast as on the ground, but not as fast as in the air...pity.
Yet she had gained good distance by flying, and the hill was pretty close now...just a bit more underground travelling would bring her to the top.

Tamao
Tamao kept running, she could see the top of the hill above her. She was getting close! She risked another glance behind her, and nearly skidded to a stop as she noticed she couldn't see Nazuki anymore. Where had she gone?! She craned her head up, but no, she hadn't gone higher. She couldn't see the light from her wings either, had she dropped to the ground? She couldn't immediately see her, and couldn't afford to keep looking. Instead, she redoubled her own efforts, sure that Nazuki was already ahead of her again, somehow. She wasn't about to give up, though. She'd do her best to win, this friendly race had turned into a bit of a competition. (15 of ? )

Nazuki could here footsteps thumping up above not too far away. Tamao was such a fast runner...Nazuki concentrated and then made a whirling funnel of chakra and used it to create a suction effect. From above ground, it would seeme that a whirlpool of dirt was forming and sucking stuff underground. If Tamao comes anywhere close to the funnel, she would be sucked in and up to her neck in dirt.
Leaving this distraction behind her, Nazuki dug forward to her destination. This was maybe a bit too competitive for a race, but there was no turning back now.

Tamao
Tamao kept running, putting one foot in front of the other, pushing off and landing, using the same running rhythm she'd devloped back in the academy. Hit, set, push, jump, repeat. With her body set to such a simple rhythm, she could focus on other things. Like where Nazuki had went. something caught her eye a short distance ahead, but she didn't know quite what it was. As she got closer, it looked like a small recess into the ground, like maybe a small sinkhole or something? The light was a little bit dimmer as the day passed on into early dusk, making the exact edges of the spot hard to see. What was it? (16 of ? )
Tamao kept moving, and felt an odd sinking sensation. She'd stepped on the very edge of the sinkhole! She nearly stumbled, but kept her balance. At that precise instant, she went through a leap of logic. Nazuki had vanished, plus odd thing in the ground equalled Nazuki was underground! The second she figured that out, she realized the sinkhole was actually a technique, not a natural obstacle. She quickly did a few hand seals, and used a technique to create dozens of panes of transparent ice above the center of the sinkhole. Falling against them, they began to crack from the force. she was already scrambling to her feet, however, and leaping over the rest of the sinkhole. Nazuki had taken the lead, she'd really have to push it to pass her again! (17 of ? )

Nazuki rose out of the ground to set a faster pace, and saw Tamao behind her again...how troublesome. But she was out of techniques to distract the more experienced kunoichi, so Nazuki just took a deep breath and started running as fast as she can. The hill was so close, and the forest was all but vanishing into grassy terrace as the top approached.
Nazuki didn't look back, the thrill was overtaking her and the final scrambled was still based on how fit you were. Breathing heavily, Nazuki set her lips into a grim line and pushed herself harder.

Tamao
Tamao saw the ground in front of her break open as something pushed up. Seconds later, that something was revealed to be Nazuki. She'd been right, the other girl had gone underground. But now they were on a level playing field, literally. The hilltop was rapidly approaching, to stop and do hand signs now was quite impossible. Tamao moved her arms along with her rhythm, slipping into a streamlined stance to try to run faster. A momentary thought came to her. She could use Body Flicker right now and take the win in an instant. The moment she thought of that, she shook her head. For something like this, Body Flicker was horribly unfair, cheap, and rather unoriginal. Three very good reasons not to use it. So she didn't. Instead, this was all leg power. She got close to Nazuki, and then they were neck and neck. the hilltop was coming ever closer, but who'd reach it first?! (18 of ? )

Nazuki was running quite fast, and one bad thing when running unstably is that you lose concentration. That's exactly what happened when her foot caught a gnarled root and she tripped, falling flat on her face. However, this would also serve the unfortunate effect of tripping Tamao as well since she was running close behind Nazuki.
Nazuki hit the ground with a muffled thud and stayed there. She could still get up, but she was really tired and she wouldn't win anyways. She didn't know what ninjas behaved like but she was sure they didn't fall like a sack of potatoes...
