"Not with me. I'm not sure about with Lori, you'll have to ask him. I'm sure he would have told you by now if class was cancelled." It wasn't common for the entire organization to shut down for the day. Maybe he wasn't expressing himself properly. "We're not all going to be hiding, don't misunderstand, but it will be a busier day than usual. It's like this for one day a month, rarely two."

"Why this day in particular?" Maia asked, curiously. Why not yesterday, or tomorrow? Or why any day at all? Why couldn't they work a bit more each day instead? "I'll ask Lori." She'd go straight to research, as soon as they got to HQ.

"Today's the full moon," Dari said, tuning to Maia. Really you weren't supposed to talk about these things, but somehow he doubted Maia was going to go blabbing about federal secrets and that anyone would believe her. "Tobias is the head of a multinational organization regarding the safety of humanity in certain regions. That's about all I can say, officially."

Maia's eyes widened in understanding. And the full moon had something to do with werewolves. And the tide. Plenty of things were affected, fairies liked to make fairy circles and dance--but what was it about werewolves? "So Toby bosses all the werewolves around," she mused.
Hm. "And you help him?"

Dari chuckled. "Well, he keeps track of them. He bosses the people in charge of keeping track of them, and keeping them safe. Of course I help him. I'm his partner." Besides, after a certain point in the night Toby would become incommunicado, at least to the point that another voice needed to be raised. That was where he came in, but that wasn't for hours yet.
"Toby and I will be staying overnight. If you want, you can have Lori drive you home."

At the mention of Lori driving her home, the selkie stiffened for a moment. She shook her head. "No, I'd rather not be home alone," She said. "I'll stay overnight too." She wondered if she'd be able to bribe Seamus into staying with her overnight. Or maybe she could stay with him in research? "Thank you, though."

Dari nodded. He'd suspected as much, but it had been kind of the elf to offer.
"My apartment will be open for you, if you'd like. Otherwise there's only the staff lounges and they don't have any beds." Plus where Toby would be staying, but he had a feeling Maia shouldn't be too present after a certain time. "There'll be a little team there. You won't be alone." He offered the selkie a reassuring smile.

"Thank you," Maia nodded.
It wasn't long until they arrived at headquarters. Maia made her way to research to find Lori after giving Dari a hug and instructing him to keep Toby from overworking. It turned out she had class, at their regular time.
She spent her time before class with Seamus; requesting he spend the night with her in Dari's apartment and suggesting she'd make it worth his time. "They have to stay overnight tonight, so I'll be alone. And I can make pasta if you like."

It was a long day. It was always a long day and it always ended in the same way. There was nothing to be done about it, though. He had a job to do. It was his responsibility to keep everything and everyone in check. It just took time, lots of time, and lots of coffee. If he got lucky, he'd get a sandwich halfway through the day. Dari was pretty good about reminding him to eat. His breaks were brief, between five and twenty minutes long, and he'd been going straight since five am. Toby sighed, rubbed his forehead, and took his headset off of one ear.
Dari meanwhile had gone to find Maia. He was well aware now if her attraction and knew she would enjoy seeing Toby, especially if she got to bring him something to make him happy. It was thirteen past the hour, so they should have some time. He'd offered her a coffee and a pastry to keep Toby awake and focused and maybe even a little contented and led her to the room that they were working from today. Today was not alone. Three others sat in the room with him for now, but only Toby turned when he heard the door open. He smiled to see who it was, and Dari smiled back.
"Well, look who it is," Toby said, leaning back a bit in his chair.

Maia was surprised by Dari's appearance, but set her book down and followed him. When offered the coffee and pastry, she knew what she wanted to do with it. Make sure Toby had a break and took a moment to relax. Today had been undoubtedly rough on him.
"I brought you these," Maia said, offering the coffee and pastry to him. "I hope they're not working you too hard." She took an empty chair. "I missed hanging out in your office today."

"Mm, no, I'm the big boss. I get to make other people work hard," Toby said with a smile. Of course he took the brunt of it. The others were mostly watching news feeds and waiting in case of simultaneous calls. Dair was his translator. There would be waves of people throughout the day, but he remained a constant. He took the snack and looped the headset around his neck, turning up the volume with an on-line control just in case.
"I'm sorry. It'll all be back to normal tomorrow." He paused, considered this. "Or the day after, it depends."
"Are you considering taking tomorrow off?" Dari asked. Toby shrugged. He always said he was considering it but rarely ever did it.

Maia's silence spoke volumes: She gave him a look that read, quite clearly, "I seriously doubt that." Even in Oregon, Toby had been the one to first address her. He'd been the one who'd cornered her and done things: he didn't seem like the kind of guy to pass work onto others.
"Eat," she ordered.

"Yes, Ma'am," Toby replied, raising his brows a moment. He sat back and took a bite, then gave a sigh. Ah, food. He forgot about it so often in here.
"So how's your day been, hm? Learn anything exciting?"

The selkie was satisfied when Toby began to eat the pastry. Good. He probably needed it. "I could bring more coffee later, since you're staying overnight." "I learned how to bribe Seamus with pasta," Maia began, considering Toby's question. "He's agreed to stay with me tonight. At least I think he has." She paused. "And I always learn a lot with Lori. I'm learning some about history now; this is a really strange country, isn't it? Pouring tea into the harbor. They could've just sold it. Or given it away to the poor. I've been reading this book about a talking lion and four children, it's neat. I think there's a lot of words we don't use nowadays, at least not here. But I've found out a wardrobe is a closet that isn't in the wall."

Toby nodded. Yes, Seamus was pretty easy to bribe, especially when the prize was edible. The usual torrent of Maia's inferences and feelings followed and although Toby smiled it was an exhausted sort of expression. American history was a little more complicated than that, wasn't it? How exactly was Lori teaching this?
"Ah. The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe. That's a good one." Finally he got a word in edgewise, but as he took a sip of coffee he thought it might all start again. "I read that when it first came out."
