"Ada-tol!" Miyuki's eyes widen upon seeing the sudden rush of violence.

Of course it never occurred to her that Emile had anything to do with it, even if he was kind of an odd person.

"Dareon stop!" Lin spoke sharply.

While she had to admit it was suspicious, she also had to admit (if not grudgingly) that with people like Arthael and Halmir (to name a few) were with them they would be pretty noticeable to anyone who was an ex-slaver.

"You can question him after we've moved, drag him with us. Then you can ask later nicely... nicer," she amended, "Don't jump to conclusions... not yet."

For a moment, Daeron didn't move, his eyes blazing, until Leilani stepped forward and put one hand on his shoulder.

"Now is not the time," she told him softly but firmly. "Believe me, I trust him as little as you do, but right now we have to get out of here."

Daeron's eyes did not change, but he did as he was told. Slowly, his fingers loosened their grip on Emile's shirt, and the human relaxed slightly and took a small step back.

"I didn't-" he began; but Daeron interrupted him with a shake of the head. "Later," he said crisply. "Right now, we've got to get going."

And he turned his back on the man to help clean up.

"Come," Lin murmured to Miyuki, "Let's go back to the wagon that way we're out of the others way. Amalirahc would you like to join us?"

She asked this because she was sure Miyuki would be more likely to open up to Amalirahc than river. Since the two had known each other since they were babies.

"Emile, you should join us too, I think being in the middle of it won't help.... and we need to talk."

Okay, that perhaps didn't sound quite the soft but commanding way her mother would have done it (she wasn't soft by any means) but she wanted to get it out of Emile before Daeron because he was obviously not going to use any tact whatsoever at the moment.

Amalirahc nodded anxiously. He had been traveling with his parents for a long time, so this wasn't the first time he had seen death - though admittedly this was the worst he had seen - but he hadn't been in the middle of it either, so it wasn't affecting him nearly as much as the others. And he was really worried about Miyuki - she was his best friend, and he couldn't stand seeing her so afraid like that. It was killing him.

Emile was a bit shaky from the reaction he'd gotten from Daeron, and he nodded when Lin called him over, without questioning her words. He would much rather talk than be taken care of be Daeron. If she wanted to talk, he was more than happy to talk.

Elros was stacking things in the wagon when they got there, but he was just finishing up - the wagon was full and ready to go, so they would have to pack the rest of the things in the other wagon. Amalirahc hopped up and held one hand down to help Miyuki up, his golden eyes still filled with anxiety.

It had been agreed by her parents since MIyuki was really young that her clingy-ness issues probably stemmed from the first time they parted. Even though Miyuki was now much older, there was a still a part of her that did like to stay with her parents. This incident probably did not help matters much at all.

So it took quite a bit of effort for her to pry herself away from her mother and take Amalirahc's hand so she could get into the wagon.

Lin, with a bit more effort climbed back into the wagon and settled herself down. Mainly so Andarien would be comfortable, besides she had a feeling she was going to have to get comfortable to. She wasn't an information gatherer in the way her grandmother was, though she could make a few educated guesses.

Amalirahc tugged Miyuki up into the wagon and patted the crate next to him so that she would sit beside him.

"Miyuki," he said quietly, "it's me, Amalirahc. Your old friend. You can talk to me about anything."

He had grown up quite a bit since the last time the two had been together. Though he was still younger than Miyuki and River, by a few years, he was quite mature - far more mature than one would expect from such a young boy.

Emile followed Lin into the wagon and sat atop a chest, crossing his legs and slouching like a child awaiting a lecture he knew would be coming.

"Look," he said tentatively, "I - I know how this must look, but really - I had nothing to do with this!"

She took a seat beside him, her tails motionless as she looked at her friend. It took a lot of effort to not just go back clinging to her mother, the only thing that was keeping her was the fact that Emile was talking to her mother and her ada-tol's reaction was still very fresh in her mind.

"I don't like it here," she sniffed.

It wasn't like Amon Darthir or like Naros.

Lin tilted her head, now that Emile wasn't being 'odd' as she had put it before. She did note that he seemed quite different than other humans from her understanding of this world. Though oddly enough that didn't increase her suspicion of him, actually she found it fascinating, more so if they hadn't been just attacked.

"Emile, I'm not accusing you of anything.... yet. Daeron hasn't quite trusted you from the start, but that's a different kettle of fish. I just want to know where were you when the fighting broke out."

Amalirahc reached over and hugged Miyuki comfortingly. He was young enough that he could get away with it without it being considered inappropriate, and he was aware that he had only a limited number of years remaining for that to be the case.

"I don't think it's a very nice area, either," he told her quietly. "But not everywhere is like this. Mama and Ada and I have been to different areas in the Southland, and there are better places. I promise it's not all like this!"

Emile looked at Lin, and there was fear in his eyes. He knew the position he was in. Daeron's reaction to his appearance had made it quite obvious. But running wasn't an option, it would only make him appear guilty.

"I was hiding," he replied quietly, calmly. "I told you yesterday, I can't fight. I'm terrible with weapons, with any weapon! And if those people saw me ..."

He shuddered.

"They hate me as it is, they despise me because I choose not to live like them, or with them. Because I choose to enjoy my life rather than waste it in the poverty they are too lazy to leave behind. But if they were to see me with you, if they suspected me of being friendly with the elves ... they would kill me. At least now they will still tolerate my presence."

"Really? You've seen the other places?" Miyuki looked up to him.

It made sense really, they could fly and get to places a lot quicker than they could even if riding horses were fun it still didn't beat being able to fly. Flying hands down was probably the best and most fun form of transportation.

"Well you are kind of unusual," Lin offered, "And I don't mean just your reaction to us. Your grasp of the common tongue suggests you're either well educated or get to use it quite often like the Rovers do. Granted they tend to have a slight accent, and you have quite the eye for horse flesh."

He wasn't just some person who happened to like to travel, he had a brain and he had been taught.

"Well, sure I have!" Amalirahc said brightly, petting her head as if she were the younger child. "Mama says we've run out of places to see for the first time, but it's nice to go back to most of them. The humans don't like us very much, but they're mostly not like the ones here. This town's the worst of them, it probably wasn't a very good place to start with."

He looked around, and his golden eyes filled with sorrow. "The people here would do anything for a bit of money ... or if they felt they had a reason to. It doesn't even have to be a real reason for them."

Emile frowned slightly. "I told you, I like to travel. I've spent most of my life traveling. Not just in the Southland, either. And to travel to other places, you need to learn their languages. What more is there to say?"

"There was an old man with them," Miyuki confided to Amalirahc, "I think he was once one of those people who stole children."

She was sure that was why they attacked even if she didn't understand it because they were in the wrong. How would they like it if the elves stole their children? Maybe they didn't like children, her mind could not help but think.

Lin shrugged, "I'm just saying, it's unusual, it's probably why Daeron became so worked up."

Well that and Emile was human, but she wasn't going to mention that.

"Honestly, it's just bad luck. Seeing Luk probably clued them in that there are former hunters of slavers among us, granted Luk being with them or them being with us is just pure chance. He certainly doesn't look anything like father."

She did wonder though what her father would think if he found out about this. Probably roll his eyes and mutter idiots under his breath, before or after he interrogated her on the well being of her and her family was unknown to her.
PostPosted: Sat Jan 15, 2011 12:38 pm

"Those are the worst kind of people," Amalirahc said harshly. "That's probably why they attacked! Because they don't even treat children well!"

He squeezed her hand reassuringly. "Don't you worry," he told her with a smile. "Our parents won't let anything happen to any of us! Everyone's just fine, aren't they? No one got really hurt! Be cheery! And hey, I saw your mama had another baby with her, did you get a little brother or sister or something? You'll have to tell me all about it!"

Emile blinked at Lin. "What does your father have to do with anything?" he asked her.

It pulled Miyuki's mind onto other matters upon hearing Amalirahc's questions.

"He's my little brother Andarien, he came from a music box egg, I'm not sure how that works though."

But if she came from the stork then she would accept he came from an egg.

"My father is human," Lin explained dryly, "He also was the one who founded Haven to stop the slavers. He's always had a soft spot for children."

She shrugged, she couldn't help but wondered what they had thought of Luk since Luk could be mistaken for human.
PostPosted: Sat Jan 15, 2011 1:17 pm

"Well, why don't you show him to me?" Amalirahc asked him brightly. "I didn't really get to look at him yet, and I think he's stopped crying."

He was sincerely eager to meet his best friend's little brother, and he had a feeling it would make Miyuki feel better too. Help to distract her.

Emile stared at her. She, a - whatever she was - with a human father? That was ... ludicrous.

"And your father ... he is a legend," he said slowly. "Does he live still?"

"I think Mommy is holding him and she's talking to Emile," Miyuki eyed Emile.

She didn't know what to make of him. It was obvious her ada-tol didn't like him all that much.

Though her mommy didn't seem to mind him at all, in fact she seemed a bit amused.

Which, Lin was because she could hear her father laughing in the back of her mind if he ever knew people considered him a legend. He would be the first to say he didn't do much except provide the initial funding.

"Yes," Lin replied, "As unbelievable as it might sound."
