I just watched this French movie that tried way too hard to make things confusing.

Was the plot supposed to be confusing?

The general idea was actually quite straightforward. It was about a guy whose wife was murdered 8 years ago, and even though he was the prime suspect, he was cleared because there wasn't much evidence to go off of. Now, eight years later, another chain of events is set off concerning his wife, and some more damaging evidence comes to light. And the whole movie's basically him escaping the police and ultimately reuniting with his (actually not dead) wife.
What was confusing was why the wife went into hiding in the first place, and why people were out to murder her. Apparently she defended a kid in court from this assaulter, but this assaulter got cleared (or maybe he didn't), and then she had some sort of affair with the prosecutor, and then she tried to confront the assaulter, and then he starts attacking her, and then her dad comes along and shoots him dead. And it turns out that that assaulter guy had actually shot the wife's husband's father dead, and there was this whole conspiracy thing involving the assaulter's father who somehow thought his son was falsely accused and wanted revenge for his death, and didn't think it was right that the wife still lived. And then it turned out that it was actually the wife who shot the guy dead, but they somehow convinced that her husband, who until now had absolutely nothing to do with all this, was actually dead too (how, I don't know), and that persuaded her to move to South America for 8 years.

From your description, the plot starts out fine then goes down in a crazy spiraling fire. Were there at least subtitles?

Yeah, there were, thank goodness. I think this is just another case of people running out of ideas and therefore just trying to make the plot as confusing as possible.

Neither have I but I've heard mixed reviews. I just don't have any interest in it.

That's the same way with me and Black Swan.

That movie was a little weird and there was a lot of sexual content. I think you can get by without watching it.

Hmm, good to know. There was so much hype about it though that I couldn't help but be curious.

Yeah, I thought the movie The Help was really good though. I liked it a lot more than Black Swan.
