Children Of The Flame

Gion grimaced inwardly. It probably doesn't help that I frowned at him earlier when I meant to frown at you, he couldn't help but comment. I think I scared him.

He was too used to people expecting the random faces, he wasn't at all used to having strangers around.

He raised his hands to talk to the man.

So ... Lore ... what do you have as your occupation? he signed, since there were no signs for librarian in his sign language (that he knew of, of course, since the concept didn't exist in his world).

"I look after the city library," Lore explained.

Since he was quite aware the lack of the word librarian, after all libraries here were private not public. As far as he knew anyhow.

"It's for the public, so I manage the books, do research for the local schools, translations and help try to get new sources of information into the library for people to use."

Well that answers my question.

Daemon replied happily, at least now he could begin at where to start digging up his memories. Without a starting point, he was beyond himself on where to start.

No one knows how long he's been a librarian there, he's been working there for a long time now, he's far older than Elnara and..

Oh.. that mark, now he understand.

And.. yes.. I do think you might have.. probably... err... scared him.

For the second time, Gion's attention was brought to the strange mark on Lore's cheek. This time however he refrained from asking about it, and only signed, So you're a scholar, then? A linguist? That's quite an accomplishment, it must have taken a while. How old are you?

He hoped he wasn't being too nosy again, but Daemon hadn't warned him against asking the man's age.

What's the big deal with the tattoo? he asked Daemon silently, careful not to look at it again. I have one, Elnara has one, each of our brothers have one ...

"Ermm...." Lore actually had to think about that, because he never celebrated his birthday (much to the horror of his assistants both past and present), "Over 200."

He had no clue the exact age, he supposed he could figure it out if he ever so wished to, but there simply wasn't a reason to. Even though he was going to get bugged about his birthday sooner or later.

The tattoo is a rune translates into 'tainted'.

Daemon replied drily now that he could link that rune to the language, before it would have been impossible for him to do so. Still he added hasily.

Not that he's tainted, it's just a mark from a bunch of bigots. Lore's hair colouring began appearing among his people around three hundred years ago. It's also marked by unusual eye colouring, and lack of magical gift. The elves are normally where he comes from very powerful magick users, a lot of the studies in magic come from them, but more of their people just were born with the ability to do nothing more than light a candle at times. It frightened them, so they separated themselves from those they considered tainted.

Daemon paused for a moment trying to think back on it.

Granted, it's all poppycock, the tainted business. The truth is Lore and people like him are a genetic evolution. The only disease that would affect his people and he's immune to it.

Gion's eyes grew brighter in understanding.

Then his people rejected him like my family rejected Elnara, he nodded inwardly. I see. Yes, I can understand then why he would be nervous here. I wonder what the rest of his people are like, physically I mean, if the white hair is an anomaly.

To Lore he signed, Well, that's a fair age. You must have quite a lifetime of adventure, but to have settled down is good.

Seeker came around the table and climbed up into Nadya's lap, then turned to face Lore again.

"If you and Aunt Elnara came from a different world then why did you come all the way out here?" she asked curiously, with the childlike ability to get away with blunt questions. (After all she could see what people did, but that didn't mean that she understood why they did these things.)

Lore blinked and chuckled at that, he couldn't help but do so. Since of course she was reminding him more of every child he had met as things went on.

"Yes.. I do like being in one place more."

And having that safety and security he couldn't have back where he was born.

"As for your question, Elnara wanted to visit your mother and father, since she had heard they had married and it had been a very long time since she had seen them. After all, you'd miss your friends and family too right?"

Hmm.. I wish I could answer that but I have no clue. They tended to keep to themselves, the only reason why anyone has any of their research is that they traded through a third party.

Daemon had to admit, he always wanted to see the place where all these intellects were studying, but unfortunately he was human. A first generation mage to boot.. .well he was a terrible mage, he was just a natural seer.

But I bet it'd be awkward to ask about them, too, Gion commented with an inner frown. You know, sometimes it's easier to ask a person questions without you warning me all the time. I could after all get away with the defense of not knowing not to ask.

Seeker nodded vigorously to Lore. "I don't think I could ever go far away from Mama and Papa," she told him seriously. "Besides, it's scary way out there, with all those people ... and I like it out here."

"Well... there are a lot more people out there than here," Lore commented on softly and thoughtfully.

He hadn't thought about it that way, but he didn't mind all the people after a while. Granted it was back home in a place where he was just one of many, maybe that's why he liked it. He was just one of many, no one to take notice of.

"It is nice here," he did agree finally, she was young after all, "Besides, it'll be quite a while yet before you're old enough to think of travelling. So who knows by then."

Daemon chuckled sheepishly, after all he couldn't help it. He just gave what he knew and he knew quite a lot. Even though there did seem to be quite a number of touchy subjects.

Why not ask more about the children? It'll tell you more about how much he's involved, and really.... neither of us know anything about them except glimpses.

Seeker nodded agreeably. "Someday I"ll be big enough to travel," she told Lore excitedly. "But first I have to learn how to defend myself, just like Papa! He's famous, you know, everybody knows him, because he's so strong and such a good fighter. He's already teaching me a bit, but Mama doesn't want him to teach me too much because she wants me to stay around here and be safe, but I want to travel someday so I have to know how to defend myself first."

Gion grinned proudly at his daughter. I'll ask when the opportunity comes up, he told Daemon certainly. Seeker seems to be having a good time with him ... which is a good sign, now that I think about it.

Lore did agree with that, no one should travel without knowing how to look after themselves and protect themselves.

"Learning how to defend yourself is always a good plan," Lore nodded at that, "It looks like you already know what you're going to be doing."

It is, but also I'm glad. We don't often get visitors here, at least people whom we haven't met or haven't seen in a long while.

Daemon commented softly, knowing quite well how limited the people she had seen, and these were people who had been around since she was born and beyond most of the time.
