I've got a black & gold yanigasawa alto, whom i named 'the Black Knight'. It is one of the best available (considering that yanigasawa and selmer are the top brands). It was made for a "harsher" jazzier sound, since im a jazz player. However, i do have a crappy Jupiter that i play for marching, because i dont want my nice horn to get beat up. (I use 3 1/2 vandorins for anyone that cares) I did play bari for a year, about 4 years ago, and i had a great time. We got to play blues brothers, and the whole song was pretty much about me and the one suza we had. But i love playing alto, and if i can get my hands on a saprano, i hope to try that too. And to respond to earlier posts, yes, the sax section is BY FAR the laziest and most carefree section, though EVERY year i have been in band, our section has been the FIRST to be able to play/memorize the music. domokun cheese_whine

I play the Suprano, Alto and Tenor. I want to learn how to play the Bari. I own a C Melody saxophone and can play it, but it needs new pads, so I'm in no hurry to get it fixed before I learn the Bari sax, hehehe.

Ok, so I was wandering around looking at alto sax pictures, and I came across this one that I absolutely would die for it's so amazing. The thing is, I don't know anything about the brand or if they are a good saxophone. So, I was wondering, has anyone heard of Keilwerth saxes, and if so what have you heard?
Not that I'll ever have the money to buy the one I want, but I can dream right?

Ok so I've been wondering do brands really matter?
I own a Sky USA (which I got form EBAY) and I have a worse tone than the time I started playing with my Yamaha rental. I'm going to find out if its my mouthpiece cause it is kinda small for me but I really do believe its the brand since I hear so much about different brands (I believe I've heard of CanonBall somewhere- distructo-)
Yeah thats just my major question, do Brands really matter?

Yamaha, Selmer, Jupiter, Vito are some of the most common brands out there. They're reliable and made with good parts and labor. The problem with buying something that isnt a name brand is that you'll get something with horrible tone or something that was made in china that if broken, it cant be fixed because of the flimsy material made to construct it.

My mom asked my band director and he said its not the brand. I'm thinking he thinks I have a Yamaha and I just suck but I don't. I've persuaded my mom to rent me a Yamaha for a month just to see if it really is my saxophone. I really need a good tone because we get graded on electives and if I get a B I doubt I'll get valedictorian(sp) in my school. And yes, I find my grade of very good importance :XP: ~~~~~ Aside from that, switching instruments: My trumpet is a piece of crap, I've completely given up on it because of its tone. I hate my mom for buying instruments off Ebay now. Also, I've always wanted to play the bassoon and Cello xd

It all depends on the instrument itself and how it is made. Name brand horns can sound pretty bad because of small differences done at the plant. I actually play on an Antigua Winds student TEnor but i hand picked it so it plays beautifully. Most other of the same brand were kinda badly made or didnt have the same tone. Most of the directors i know wont allow their students to play on anything other than a brand that they know about. The lesson is find a place were you can play the horn first before you buy it so you know what your getting.
