anyone here besides me absolutely loath mellophone??? Its like the antihorn! It is horribly out of tune, it's top heavy, it has horrible tone quality and just does not represent the horn well at all.

Mello for a few months, French horn for about a week. (Just switched from trombone.) Question: I'm having a lot of trouble with horn. Is it the same as everything else, just needing a ton of air support? Because it's haaaaard. After playing mellophone for a while, I thought I could tackle horn easily (because for how long I've been playing mellophone, I'm fairly good already.)

Horn has more tubing than mello meaning accuracy will be a lot more difficult. That could explain a little, plus because of more tubing, your high range may not be as good. Other than that all I can really say is play some long tones.

Its the sound of the instrument. I have the same range on mello and better accuracy than horn, but seriously the sound the instrument makes in comparison to the horn is just disgusting and its not because I completely suck. I've heard mello played well, and I still hate it.

Mello is high pitch then French Horn and fact is that Mello isn't even suppose to be played by us players cause Mello is technically for Trumpets. And Mello uses Trumpet fingerings,it really creates a unfocused sound when compared to Concert Horn.Though we use it cause it uses the same mouthpiece.I can't change your opinion since i really don't know you but it's band their are going to be things you like and dislike.

I've heard mello played well, and I still hate it. If you can make a mello sound half way decent then I highly respect you. Mello is high pitch then French Horn and fact is that Mello isn't even suppose to be played by us players cause Mello is technically for Trumpets. And Mello uses Trumpet fingerings,it really creates a unfocused sound when compared to Concert Horn.Though we use it cause it uses the same mouthpiece.I can't change your opinion since i really don't know you but it's band their are going to be things you like and dislike. that is true. Luckily our high school only has a pep band rather than a marching band, so I don't have to deal with it that often. Idk.... I would just in general much rather listen to a horn than a mello. Mellos are perfect for on the football field and maybe some big band jazz groups, but anywhere else in my opinion def not. Luckily I don't think I will have to play mello in college (as long as I'm not an ed. major) so I'll just stick with horn

I think that if we're representing mellophone in this guild thread we should also represent Wagner Tuba. It may not be played as often as mello, but it is way cool also. Wagner Tuba for those who need to be filled in, was created by Wagner for his Ring Cycle. It is the mix between a horn and a tuba. It uses a horn mouthpiece and can be keyed in b flat or f. It is mostly used in operas, but is also used in Ballets like The Rite of Spring, and many of Bruckner's symphonies. Typically Horn players play Wagner Tuben (plural version) so I think they should be included and represented in the horn thread.
