Totoma's Name: Heeds the Call Owner Username: Ishtadaal Link to uncert:What a heartbreaker~ Name Origin: A typical Totoma youth, this buck didn't earn his name until early adulthood, when the siren call of the swamp wormed its way into his dreams. He made his first attempt as a callow youth– fairly soon after completing his first hunt, finding himself lost in the alien, unfamiliar landscape, before eventually wandering back, battered and worse for the wear. He was taken back with reluctance– surely he must have eaten something off, and not truly tried to leave. This, for a time, was enough.
But the dreams kept coming. Determined to see what it was about, he approached the head of his family-herd, only to be shot down with admonition and icy contempt. He continued training himself, and trying to earn her respect, so that she may see the advantage of letting someone young and strong scout out the lands outside of the mountains to see what they might hold.
The dreams kept coming– stronger and more insistent, but the haunting promise from the head of the herd that he would be left forever nameless and shamed to them meant that he wouldn't– he couldn't, leave until he had earned the herd's blessing– or at least their acceptance.
It was not long after he was publically mocked by an elder for his idiocy in continuing to ask for permission that he acted. He earned the right to leave through offering a challenge, and defeating the herd leader in single combat. He was given no name, but was sent off in solemnity, with a couple relatives who had also heard the call and were now free to heed it. That family that came with him– once they reached the swamp that he and the others had known to be real, but that he himself had had the courage to seek out– were the ones to give him his name.
