Well. My steampunk started with League of Extraordinary Gentleman's Nautilus. I loved the style of it. I found a site listing vehicles from movies, and it was described as a "steampunk submarine". I searched the term, and I just feel in love with the style.

<.< Ehhhh, I like looking at Victorian style dresses, but not wearing them. I was force-fed about steamships in college (via FFIX), and then my friend got me in this guild to help with the web comic.

"Those who revel in the brilliance of the Sun,"
I've been into it or some time now, but otherwise couldn't tell you exactly when. Ever since I was a kid I know I've liked the European and Victorian styles, and not long after that, I played games and things with Steampunk themes. I only learned a few years back that it was called Steampunk, and have been enthralled with it even more since. Otherwise, nothing else I can recall. Just been into it for quite some time now. And I don't plan on stopping liking it either, ever.

It's hard to say that there was a specific time I really got interested in steampunk. I loved A Series of Unfortunate Events, which I at least consider to be steampunk. I also like old industrial stuff. Since I live near Chicago and Gary, I see a lot of it.
For some reason or another, my interest took off during sophomore year of high school. I look back at my sketchbook from then and find all sorts of steampunk fashion designs. My friend and I started watching all sorts of steampunk movies and acquiring steampunk wardrobes back then too.

I can think of no better group to answer your questions and exemplify some of the broad variations allowed in Steampunk. I ought to actually look into the webcomic, I've only been hearing about it...

I've known about steampunk for a definetly long time, but it was only recently that the subculture itself piqued my interest. Honestly, I had been avoiding it because I thought the name was a little dorky. However, last year, my english teacher(of whom I believe is a secret steampunk fanatic, she also made us study Da Vinci) had us studying Victorian England and the rest of the world during that era. I must absorb things people tell me like a sponge to water, because I started drawing victorian characters piloting Da Vinci esque machines. Another thing that got me more and more intrested was the Japanese animated film Howl's Moving castle, I love everything by it's creator (I forgot his name) and this was my favorite besides spirited away. I eventually became very intrested a short time ago when I stumbled across a steampunk rp subforum in a guild I'm in. It was VERY unactive, and I soon started searching other's out. What I found was a subculture I didn't even know existed. I was surprised to find that there was fashion, community, and even music attributed to Steampunk. I was even more surprised when I found that I like it... a lot! I expected steam punk music to sound like the robot chicken theme, but Abney Park proved that so wrong.

I was first heading into full on victorian goth look but being in Australia that's very hot and heavy especially in summer. I was introduced to Steampunk through Dr Steel and his toy soldiers actually, I saw Dr steel and some of the stuff he wore then looked it up and fell in love with it. It's light and can be modified and some of it costs NOTHING to do. Excellent stuff to wear in Australia because it won't absorb the heat.

WELL, I was once a normal boy. But than, when I was 16, I was walking hom from school and a giant brass, coal powered shaggin-waggon screeched to a stop next to me, and forceful arms pulled me inside. The next thing that I remember is it being 6 days later, and having no external epidermus. In place of the the skin on my lower body, a fancy victorian suit had been grafted on over the internal organs, and what appeared to be a piston and driveshaft where my heart once was... After this incident, I took the next logical step!

A love of Final Fantasy and Last Exile. I love the Victorian style of clothing and the way that the cloths and the brass goes together. It was like they were meant for it.

I think it started when I watched the movie, The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen. I started to read more books in the steampunk genre after that and eventually became a fan of the genre. I think the clothing style of steampunk also contributed, as I think the clothes are really cool. Goggles. heart

I have sort of found myself in it. I alway thought Gothic clothing had interesting aesthetic potential but the dark dreary mood the style exudes is not my thing.
I have always liked reading about England and the days of old around the world in general. But at the same time science fiction adventures draw me nearly as equally as the magical adventures in fantasy. So I've always felt a little stuck in-between time.
And I started seeing Steampunk elements creeping into things like Myasaki movies, Final Fantasy, and other movies like Stardust, Treasure Planet, and Wild Wild West. The elements appealed to me like nothing else so I started to rummage through the net. Once I had a subculture name to look up that was really the beginning of the end.
I've found that nearly all my likes and tastes can be easily placed into this one rather flexible subculture without forcing me to change anything about me. My love for adventures in exotic faraway places. My desire for various modern day conveniences and current impossibilities to be had along side the romantic notions of what the "olden days" where like. My pleasure at finding clever inventions and quirky uses for random stuff. And just my love of seeing old things having happy homes in present day.
