Laughing softly, Jade squatted down to stroke Owle's head, scratching her gentley behind the ears.
"Your mum might just be able to win a cat show; she's a gorgeous short-hair." Having ment it jokingly, she smiled fondly at the black cat in her son's arms.
While Jade stroked the kitty's head, Nikolai began petting the cat's body, scratching the cat's tush at the base of the tail. For his kitty at home, it might as well be labeled "elevator button" for the effect it had on cats. Such silly creatures!

Too much petting...will to get up, falling...
Owle's purr grew louder, a great rumbling that hummed through her entire small body. She stretched out her back legs as Nikolai scratched her, eyes closing as she reveled in the glow of all the attention she was receiving.
"They have shows for cats?" Rand asked, his green eyes peering up at Jade. He knew they put on shows just for kids...but he'd never seen rows and rows of cats all sitting down in front of a puppet show in the park! Maybe they only had cat shows at night, after he went to bed...

"Yes, they judge cats depending on how they look and things of that sort." Standing up once more, she smiled at Rand. "Would you like to play a game Rand? I'm sure Nikolai can join us when he's finished petting Owle."
Looking back at the pair on the floor, Jade laughed softly. She gave a smile, thinking how precious her little Nikki looked.
Feeling tickled by the rumbling little kitty on his lap, Nikolai laughed. Before long, he had to release the woman-in-disguise so he could relieve himself of her purring. Gentley shooing her off his lap, the boy stood.
Games! They were talking about games and were going to leave him behind? Ha, not hardly! Bounding over to Rand, the young boy pounced on him in hopes of not being forgotten.

"Oh! So it's like a beauty contest?" He'd heard of those. If people in a beauty contest went down a catwalk, did cats go down a peoplewalk? Or was it called a catwalk cause cats made it first? Maybe mom would know, but right now there was a game to play!
"What kind of a game?"
Aww...she had to move? Owle sort of slid off of Nikolai's lap as he prompted her, and didn't move for a few seconds afterward.
When she did, it was to resume human shape, then shake her head briskly before forcing herself to rise from where she'd been laying on the floor.
"Oooh...Jade, no more catnip..." She groaned, exaggerating by putting one hand to her forehead, trying to clear the fog away from her mind. "It always makes my head fuzzy..."
"Oof!" Rand barely caught his balance as Nikolai barreled into him. "Hey, careful!"

"Oh-oh! Owle, be careful!" Thinking the woman might fall, Jade strode to the woman's side in three quick steps to grasp Owle's shoulder.
"I'm sorry... Cats always seemed to enjoy it, so I thought...." She bit her lip, saying no more. If Owle took offense to this as well, Jade was certainly up the creek without a paddle.
having hold of Rand around his neck in a nearly piggy-back fashion, Nikolai grinned brightly. Though when he saw Owle change, Nikolai looked just as happy.
More people to play! Though, the kitty was gone... It didn't seem to sink in that the cat was, indeed, Owle.

Owle was steady enough; but she blinked and caught Jade's eye. "Oh...no, it's okay." Still mellowed out from the effects of the plant, Owle couldn't stir herself to be angry anymore. "You couldn't have known; cats do like it, I just try to avoid it..."
She didn't want to explain why; that would only serve to mortify Jade further.
Rand was bent over, trying to keep most of Nikolai's weight on the floor where it belonged. He didn't want to throw the other boy off him, but he also didn't want Nikolai there anymore.
"Come on, let's play already!" he demanded, figuring Nikolai would need his hands free to play.

"Here, why don't you sit down?" She led Owle carefully to the couch, helping her to site carefully. "Would you like me to make you some coffee?" Assuming that would wake Owle up a bit more from the plant's effects, she looked towards the kitchen in hopes of spotting the coffee pot.
Dropping to the ground, Nikolai beat his little wings quickly in his excitement, still grinning. He did rather want to play!
It was then he realized; he'd pitched his shirt and shoes back on the beach, and with the chaos over with.... he was pretty cold. Folding his arms over his chest, the boy smiled sheepishly up at Rand.

Owle shook her head again, this time to actually convey something rather than just trying to shake herself out of catnip stupor.
"No, no, I'm okay." She pulled away from Jade, gently. "If I sit down, I'll never get up again."
The couch did look very comfortable...she could just lay down on it, close her eyes, roll around a little, and just wait out the effects of the plant...
But the option was just tempting enough to make her avoid it as dangerous.
"No thank you," she said at the offer of coffee. She didn't drink the stuff, though there was a coffeepot sitting prominently on the kitchen counter. Enough customers came in (when there were customers) wanting coffee that she always made sure to keep some on hand.
Rand turned around to face Nikolai, again looking admiringly at his sparkling wings. He wished his lit up like that! His were just all squishy...
He didn't seem to mind much being without shirt or shoes...the weather was mild enough in Gambino that a shirt was just a formality, at least in Rand's opinion. So he didn't understand what Nikki was trying to hint at.

"If you say so..." Jade looked unsure, still worried she'd done something wrong.
Though she would rather like to be of more assistance, Jade was more a hinderance than a help and she knew it. Catnip would no longer be on her person while visiting Owle, she'd be sure of that much from now on!
The glittering wings twinkled slightly, the lad looking at Rand curiously before whining at him. Rubbing his arms, he looked towards the door and pointed.
How was he going to make his friend understand? Nikolai couldn't talk, so how could he conceive the notion of fetching his shirt and shoes? Looking to his mother a moment, Nikolai started towards the door to go look for the lost articles of clothing.
Pausing after a few steps, he looked at Rand in hopes his friend would come with him.

Owle shook her head again, quickly, hoping the motion would rattle her brain and force it to move again. No such luck.
"I'll be okay in a few minutes..."
"You want to go back out again? Well, okay..."
They had just come back inside, but that had been his fault. If Nikolai wanted to play outside more, that was fine with Rand! He trotted after his smaller friend, jumping around the chairs if they got in his way.
Once outside, he looked around, noticing their shirts and shoes lying on the sand, dangerously close to the tide line. "So, what did you want to do out here?"

Instead of waiting to explain, Nikolai darted over towards their clothes and began clumsily shaking out his shirt. Sand went flying, and Nikolai shut his eyes tight and turned away as it lashed back at him.
With all the sand gone at last, he tried to pull on his shirt. Much like any toddler learning to dress himself, Nikolai had quite a bit of trouble at first before finally succeeding.... only to put his arms through the holes for his wings, and wings through his sleeves.
Looking back at his wings, Nikolai was fairly surprised at this new twist. Wings flapping experimentally in their new sleeves, he turned to look back at Rand with a small whine and an expression that clearly said one thing: Help!
Nodding, Jade turned to look at the boys just as they left through the door.
"I hope they're not getting in trouble again..." She walked over to a window and quickly spotted the pair. With a chuckle and a motherly smile, she glanced back at Owle and gestured for her to come over. "Come look at this!"

Rand chuckled. "Silly, that's not where they go!" He trotted over to Nikolai, trying to puzzle out how to get his friend unstuck. He tugged the shirt this way and that, experimentally, and, after a while of this sort of thing, managed to pull it up and over Nikolai's head. Nikolai wasn't stuck anymore...but he didn't have a shirt on, either.
"With Rand out there, I wouldn't get your hopes up..." Owle said, shaking her head. Rand was a trouble magnet, pure and simple, but she loved the little scamp.
Coming to peer out the window, Owle couldn't help but suppress a giggle.
"When Rand was his age, he couldn't even fit his wings into the shirt...he used to come down wearing it on his head, asking me for help!"

Whining quietly, Nikolai pouted at Rand; he'd thought he'd be able to dress himself by now... Childishly, the boy held up his hands in hopes Rand would dress him. Even though it did cause the boy's cheeks to burn red in embaresment.
Jade laughed softly, smiling at the thought. "His wings do look fluffy." She mused, glancing at Owle. "Was his sacrifice a stuffed animal of sorts?" The only other way there would be stitching on his wings like that, Jade assumed, was if the animal sacrificed was stitched up after an accident.
That was an unpleasent thought, and Jade quickly put it out of her mind. "I couldn't remember if you'd told me or not, I'm sorry..."

Rand stared, blinking at his friend. It took him a while before he recognized that pose as the one mom always used to ask him to assume so that she could get his shirt on him.
"Ah..."
The wolf boy glanced at the shirt in his hand, then back to Nikolai. This was the sort of thing mom should be doing, not him...
...still, though, he couldn't leave his friend waiting like that, and Nikolai had helped him get the crab off.
Carefully he stretched out the bottom opening of the shirt, checking which was the front and which was the back, then lowered it down over Nikolai, helping him coax his wings through it.
Owle nodded. "Yes. A wolf plushie, that my..." She frowned slightly. "...father had given to me."
It was weird to think of Kal Torak that way. Tiamika was not fully Owle, just as the Owle she had been in the past was not fully who she was now. Odd to think that Tiamika's family was hers, and vice versa...

With a bit of a struggle and Rand's help, Nikolai managed to slip into his shirt once more. It was sandy, itchy, and dirty, but it was better than freezing.
His wings flapped almost as if they had a mind of their own, freeing themselves of the sand scraped onto them as they entered and exited the shirt.
Lifting his hands to his head, he ruffled the sand from his hair. Smiling broadly, hair tasseled messily, the boy looked grateful for his friend's help. Even though a word never left his lips to actually thank Rand.
"Oh..." Jade murmured softly. No longer quite sure of what should be said, she watched the boys outside the window in silence.
