Ruby allowed a small smile up at Azalia, it was comforting to have someone to say what one wants to hears, and someone who tells the truth while doing so.

"She might be a desperate soul, but how would she know where to find us. This could be a problem. If the average kid on the street knows where we are, anybody else could know. The military could walk in here any minute... couldn't they? Are we still safe?" Roxy was starting to feel uneasy about the entire situation.

"We just have to trust, Roxy. As long as we have Jesus, there's no need to fear. We will always be safe if we trust in him. Try as they might, the military can never take him away from us, even if they kill us." Azalia gave Roxy a quick reassuring hug.

After a few moments, Jessica gave up waiting for the other two and slid past them with a soft "'Scuse me." Now that she was dry, she realized she was starving. She quietly moved to the dining room and, ignoring the curious gazes of those around her, kept her eyes on the floor.

When she reached the dining room, she found Roxy, the girl who had helped her in, and another girl talking in low voices. "Hello," she said, the first word she had spoken without mumbling.

Azalia smiled at Jessica when she walked in. "Jessica, this is Ruby. Ruby, this is Jessica. Now that you're nice and dry, let's get you fed. We have spaghetti, and you can have biscuits if you like, I'll go get the butter for them. And the fruit coctail! I have some cans of that I was going to make. In the meantime, help yourself." She then excused herself and went back to the kitchen.

Jessica nodded politely when she was introduced and quietly thanked the other girl as she left the dining room. She sat down at the table and took a biscuit. Distractedly, she picked off small pieces of the biscuit and ate it as she stared at a spot on the table, millions of questions running through her mind. Would she be able to go back home? Would her parents miss her if she didn't? Was she going to be forced to be a Christian now that she was there? Is Cassie seriously dead?

The last question overwhelmed her; she paused with a piece of bread halfway to her mouth as tears pooled in her eyes and threatened to spill over. Gulping down the lump that had formed in her throat, she shook her head and forced her mind off that particular subject.

Azalia was in turmoil on the inside, but this girl was obviously shaken, and needed security, so she had plastered on her best everything's-perfectly-alright smile and was being super friendly. Once inside the kitchen and out of sight however, her face fell. There was a lot of questions that had to be answered, and she was trying to think of the best way to go about it. She stopped herself and remembered what she had told Roxy. Trust. She took a deep breath, and when she had gotten the butter, a knife, and the bowl of fruit coctail, she put the smile back on and went back to the dining room. She set everything on the table. "Alright, Jessica. Now to get to the big elephant in the room that everybody sees but nobody's saying anything about. How did you find out about us? I don't mean to be rude, but security is a big deal around here, as you can probably imagine."

Jessica drew a deep, shaky breath. Could she talk about Cassie without crying? Of course she could. She'd had years of practice hiding her emotions.

Schooling her features, she said, "I have... had... a Christian friend." She gulped down the lump that threatened to form in her throat. "She told me about this place. But don't worry," she added quickly, understanding their need for security, "I was the only one she ever told. She said... well, she said she felt God leading her to tell me about it for some reason; she didn't know way. Anyway, that's how I found out about this place."

"Well, God bless you both then." Judging by Jessica's word choice and her earlier tears that something bad had happened to her friend. Azalia decided now was not the time to inquire over such issues, she had other business to ask about. "So. As you probably know then, we are the Adolescent Resistance Movement, and we go out and try to spread the word about Jesus, distribute bibles, things like that. It's risky, but I think it's worth it. We'll give you a room upstairs, it's not much, just a bed, dresser, and table, but we might be able to snag a rug or some curtains from some abandoned building. That's what I did, and my room looks quite cozy now. It's sort of a mismatched thriftstore look, but cozy."

Jessica nodded, barely hearing what the girl had to say about the rooms. "It's risky, but I think it's worth it." The phrase reverberated through her mind. Why?! she begged to ask, but kept her mouth shut. Maybe these people thought she was Christian. Would they throw her out if they knew the truth?

"I'm not Christian," she blurted out suddenly. If it was going to be a hinderance, they might as well get it over with now.

Mia had been picking at her food, not really hungry. She wasn't really paying too much attention to the conversation, until Jessica admitted that she wasn't a Christian. Mia looked up, and said, "So, does that mean we shouldn't offer you help?...Wait, lemme rephrase that..." she paused to think, then said, "It doesn't really matter. Because..." she trailed off, unable to think of the proper way to phrase what she wanted to say.

Jason slipped his hand back out of his pocket when he heard the OK. He had two small smoke grenades that he would use to disorient and either escape from or get the upper hand on any hostile intuders. When he saw the girl, he felt his chest tighten. More so when she admitted that she wasn't a Christian. He put of the plans he had been pondering and focused on the topic at hand. "....Because it's the right thing to do. You needed help, we gave it. We ask no reward or payment from you, we only want you to be secure. You could walk right back out that door that you came in through, and I wouldn't do a thing to stop you...."
PostPosted: Fri Oct 20, 2006 8:14 pm

"Exactly." Azalia said in agreement with Jason. "Your friend trusted you, and so I think we can as well. Even if you are not a Christian, you are still our neighbor, and we will love you all the same. Seeing as you do not share our beliefs, I do not expect you to go around risking your life for something you don't believe in, so I must warn you: if we are caught you will most likely be killed with the rest of us. By staying here, you are willingly putting yourself in danger. If the soldiers get in here, they won't go around asking if we're Christians, and even if they do and you say no, you'll probably be called a liar and killed anyway. I just want you to be fully aware of the risk you're taking by associating with us. If you aren't willing to take it, you may certainly leave at any time."

Jessica looked from one person to the next as they spoke. She tried to decide whether or not she was surprised. Had she been expecting them to throw her out as soon as they knew? No. That wasn't what Cassie was like.

Then there was the other question. Was she willing to risk her life for something she didn't even believe? Well, it was either that or go home. But something told her to stay. There was something in the atmosphere here, something she had never felt at home. And instinct was telling her to stay.

She simply nodded her thanks and continued eating.
