My band director discourages it, but he says if you had to, do it inside your shoe.

my bd makes fun of me for swaying instead of tapping my foot. i rock back and forth and apparently, it's distracting. then again, the rest of the drumline bobs their heads. they're such cute little chickens! xd

Yesh, I tap my foot. Alot of people do it in our band and our teacher says to do whatever helps. Sometimes when we're practicing in the chorus room on the bleachers, you can hear everyone tapping. XD Even when I'm not keeping time and I'm just listening to songs on the radio, my feet are the things that start to dance first. XD

When I was younge I never used to, but then once I joined marching band I find it rather hard to stop tapping my foot.
You should really try not to do it during actual concerts because it is distracting for the audience and sometimes the audience can hear you tapping your foot.

River Angel Odin Okay, this has been bothering me for three years...since 6th grade when I joined the middle school band. I'm not saying I downright hate my band director or anything, but I can't possibly keep tempo without having to tap my foot. And he's told me so many times to stop (but I still havn't) and he says that tapping your foot is for babies, which was quite insulting to me, actually. My dad's a big music teacher (He was Rhode Island Teacher of the Year) and he taps his foot, which basically means that Mr. Fortier was calling him a baby. The funny thing is, he looks up to my dad yet he's calling him a baby. sweatdrop Anyway, do you think tapping your foot is at all bad? I learned at our local college band camp that instead of tapping your foot a good alterntive (so you dont annoy your BD) is tapping your toe in your shoe no one hears it and no one knows I do that all the time now *prone to foot tappin*

i try not to do it, cos' i often bump into my stand partner (not that he minds it...) so i cross my ankles but i still tap a bit, i try not to though, even if our band teacher doesn't care.

we are basically forced to tap our feet. even during concert season, a judge will mention something if someone isnt tapping their foot

I think its good to tap your foot. It keeps you on tempo. I have a hard time doing it because I wasn't taught to tap my foot. But I occasionally do tap my foot especially if its extremely fast or slow.

I think it just depends on the teacher. In elementary school, my clarinet teacher taught us to tap our foot, not necessarily so much to keep tempo but to count the length of notes. My current choir teacher says that he wants us to tap our hand on our knees and that tapping our foot will only make us off beat. I've been taping away and, as sad as it is, I'm one of the few people in the upper choirs who can actually sight read and stay in tempo thanks to tapping my foot.
So, I say it's a good thing but a preference.

Yeah, I always tap my foot. I'd get lost if I didn't. I also have to count out loud...I'd get lost if I didn't do that too! xp I'm just a dumb percussionist! whee

Oh, the clarinets get in soooooo much trouble for tapping their feet... (our band has, like, 22 clarinets or something, and they sound like elephants when they tap, lol) I tap my foot, but not very loudly...yeah.

I begin a song with it, but I usually stop tapping after I get the beat into my head. Well, that's in band. on my own, (on Piano and guitar, this is) I don't, because it's difficult to do whilst standing (guitar) and I just don't really keep time on piano.
