"Yep, praying for a girl. But something gets at me," he admitted, "I have absolutely no ideas for names." His shoulders drooped a bit, knowing he probably should have come up with at least a few ideas by now. "How'd you come up with Gavin's name?" Maybe they already had names, that would be helpful, but not. Who knew.

"To tell you the truth, I actually tried reading an entire name dictionary," Remi paused to remember exactly what she did. "I think I collapsed the night before somewhere in the middle of the G's, which is probably why Gavin stuck out in my memory."
She gave him a sheepish smile. Not exactly the best way to choose a name. But Gavin seemed to like it, and she hadn't heard any complaints from anyone else.
"Still, it seemed to work out well. I'm sure you'll find a name that fits."

"Yeah, probably," he said, nodding cheerfully, "Actually, I was sort of lying. At first I was thinking Elaine, if it's a girl like I think. The soul made me think of my mother, is that weird?" Truthfully, he wasn't sure why it did, but it did. The expression, just generally the way it made him feel. Cheerful and uncomfortable at the same time. Very weird.

Remi nodded approvingly at the name Elaine. Very pretty name. It was names like that that made her wonder how the heck her own parents chose her name. Would it have been all that hard to choose something a bit more conventional?
At his next question, she shook her head. "I don't think that's too weird. I'm guessing Elaine's your mother's name then?"

Picking his coffee mug back up, he nodded, "Her first name is Sarah actually, but she liked being called Elaine now, says Sarah is more of a little girl's name." His mother had some... Interesting ideas, and her latest few were no exception. She wanted to be called by an "older" name but she didn't want to look old. Plastic surgery and personal trainers galore.

Remi blinked before finishing the last couple bites of one of her pancakes. She couldn't tell the difference between how much older Elaine sounded from Sarah. Both sounded like perfectly good names. If anything 'Sarah' sounded older than 'Elaine' in her mind. Maybe it was just a matter of taste.
"What about your father?" she asked before taking another sip of coffee. "What's his name?"

Stephan set his cup down, taking a few more bites of his own. The strawberries were fresh, so they were sweet. Almost too sweet for breakfast. "James, nice and simple," he laughed, "What about your parents? They have to have been interesting to give you a name like Remi." Ouch, said that wrong. "I mean, not that there's anything wrong with it, it's a nice name. Just different."

Remi laughed at the comment on her own parents.
"It's alright," she reassured him. She didn't dwell much on her own parents, but mostly because she hardly kept in contact with them. Maybe she would give them a call when she got home. "My theory is that they tried blending their own names together. My father's name is Remus, and my mother's is Mia. Either that or they just decided to make something up when I was born. They've never told me."
When she was little and had asked why her name was the way it was, they told her it was going to be like a family secret. Her parents...were interesting in and of themselves. During her childhood they'd been quite eccentric, though they seemed to have grown out of it over the years, considering how conservative they've recently become. Now Remi wondered if it was a secret, or just an embarrassment to them now.
"I think my parents met in their 'hippie' phase, so who knows what they could have been thinking," she smiled.

Stephan couldn't help but crack a smile at the mention of hippie phases. His parents had been the furthest thing from hippiest for most of their lives, and as far as he knew, the most rebellious thing his father ever did was change an A to an A+ on his report card in third grade. "Well, my parents are fairly white bread, Angie actually came up with her own nickname. They still call her Angelica, no matter how many times she tells them she hates it."

"Ugh, that would drive me nuts," Remi said, empathizing somewhat with his sister's pain. As a little girl she'd begged and begged for some sort of name change. She'd told her parents she'd hated her name, because it was different from all the other little girls' pretty names. By middle school she just accepted it, though it was a bit awkward when she'd first meet people.
"Well, whatever phase my parents were in they're out of it now," she continued. "They've gone from complete rebels to absolute conformists."
In some ways she liked the change, in others she wished they would have stayed eccentric.

He nodded, "They'd get along with my parents. My father, most conservative, cheap, stubborn, and paranoid man I've ever met. And my mom, she's a bit more normal. She's sweet, but she's kind of oblivious to a lot of things." Through his childhood, his mother had been sort of in and out, picking her charities and things over time with her kids. He didn't really mind though, as he'd gotten older he'd realized that they cared about him. Angie however, hadn't quite gotten the message.

Remi chuckled a little. "See, my parents are a bit opposite. My mother's the one who instigated the sudden turnaround in their attitude. My dad still tries to hold on to the old days, but unfortunately it doesn't help much."
It was a bit sad, watching her father be nostalgic. He'd bring up memories during dinner conversation that her mother would quickly cut short, saying it was 'inappropriate.' Still, whenever Remi was alone with him he'd tell her stories. It was the most she could do, giving him someone to listen to him.
Gavin swallowed the last bite of his own pancakes, and let out a loud burp that even shocked Remi into wondering how a toddler could make such a sound.
"All done!"

Stephan had been focusing on the conversation, and hadn't really been paying attention to Gavin. But when the boy broke his silence, he snapped to attention, "Woah, Gavin, think maybe you ate a bit too fast?" He still had about a fourth of his pancakes left, and he wasn't so much talking that the boy was done before them, but that he had swallowed a bunch of air.

"Pancakes good," he pouted, staring at his now completely empty plate. Remi even still had one half a pancake to go. She was blinking in amazement that her son had eaten so much so fast.
"Next time try savoring your food," she could only smile as he looked up at her with a confused expression. "If you inhale it, the taste doesn't last as long."
Gavin nodded in understanding, now slightly disgruntled that he no longer had anything to eat.

Stephan took a few bites of his remaining pancakes. "You're not in trouble, don't worry," he offered, glancing at Remi to see if he was overstepping his boundries. He knew he didn't really have any right to tell Gavin he wasn't in trouble, but he remembered that when he was a kid he always thought he was in trouble when someone gave him advice like that.
