AshWufei Arcarsenal Ghost So humbuckers would be more suited for blues? Not to act as a pickup expert here, answering all these questions, but: It all depends on your personal tastes. I know your all tired of hearing this, and so am i, but i too have come to realize its all in what you want to hear, and it takes practice to get the tone you want. Also, alot of your sound comes from how you play, not what you play through. HOWEVER: In general (i love that term i guess), if you want fat bottomed, trudging, rough blues, go with humbuckers, as such is put in guitars like the gibson ES (Like Lucille). It gives you that extra growl without the high end bit of single coils, and also sounds a bit deeper and more soulful Single coils however, can also be use for blues. I use single coils for the blues (i'll use usually a Telecaster, personal preferance). Single coils i believe are more suited for Texas blues, that is, stuff like Winter or SRV, or even clapton and Hendrix. It allows a great ghigher pitched range, and allows you to have that extra bite for squeeling (but still soulful) solos. They have a great twangyness (Tele's do anyway) and tone for the blues, but they dont really have much growl, and often sound pretty muddy if you turn the tone nob down and crank the bass too much. All in all, if you want low, growling blues such as B.B. King, use humbuckers. If you want a more squeelin' high flyin' or great-for-wah-wah tone, use single coils. *deep breath* Another interesting thing worth pointing out is that the cover plates will make a lot of difference in the humbucker sound. I find that removing the coverplate or getting open pickups (Because the covered ones have wax all through them) will really brighten up the sound. This is a very minute detail, but it could make a difference to the sensitive ear. Jimmy Page used to use an open humbucker in the bridge position on his Les Paul to really open the sound up.

Never really thought of that. Maybe when i get my next guitar (definately humbucker equipped), illl check that out. Or i may just go for the tele humbucker that ive had my eyes on after i upgrade my amp.

I played my neighbor's guitar which is the same make as mine, but it has open duncan designed pickups. when I played it, I couldn't get it to cool down. I'm confident that the pickups are somewhat hindered when they're in a case. you have to think that there's that extra plate that obstructs the magnetism just a little, but it's enough to make the pole pieces a little cooler.
