I read from the Torah for my bat mitzvah, because my temple is reform. I have to say, it was really hard work. Imagine doing it every week... 3nodding . They know the Torah like... like... better than the back of their hand blaugh ! Yeah... And what about Tsvi? Isn't he going to be "Baal- Kora"?

tsvi_tyl does anyone here know how to read from the torah?? I know. I read all the time at my shul and school (Jewish school). As for mishna and gemara, I've studied both of them and next semester I'm taking a class on Pirkei Avot and another studying Talmud Nezeokim. I can't wait!

This may not belong here, but I have a few questions I want clarified to me.
Recently I was asked what the Jewish persecption of Hell was, and I was kind of embarassed for not having an answer, for usually I'm considered a wealth of knowledge to my Christian friends over Judaism. (I'm really not, they just think I am because I know a little more than they do.)
Anyway, I was wondering if anyone could explain their opinion on Hell.
Also, I've heard some things about Jesus. I also want to know about this box or whatever it was that he had that would allow him to do "miracles." And what about about the whole "rape" thing.

I'm a bit confused. See that's what I thought. I told the chick I didn't think there was a hell per se. I figured Hell was probably just something the Catholics made up to scare people into religion. Anyway, apparently I'm confusing a lot of people about Jesus raping some chick, so just forget about it.

There is a hell in a sense, in Hebrew it's called "Gehenom" (pronounced Geh-Hay-Nome). After a person passes away, their neshama (soul) leaves their body and goes up to heaven, where you are judged in the heavenly court before G-d. You're whole life is replayed, everyone you ever knew is there to watch. All your deeds are weighed, and you must answer the questions G-d asks you. Your good deeds protect you, the people you help speak up for you. Your bad deeds are your prosecutor, and the people you hurt speak against you. Then it is decided whether you are worthy of heaven. There is punishment for your bad deeds, you must be cleansed before going into heaven (Not all people go to heaven though, Hitler being an easy example). This punishment takes place in "Gehenom". The punishments there are horrible and embarrassing. You get your right and just punishment, you go through EXACTLY what you deserve. Afterwards, if you deserve it, you go to heaven. It is said by our rabies that all Jews have a place in heaven (including converts). A Jew must EARN that place though! A person forfeits his right to take his place in heaven if: He commits suicide, in that case he is sent to "Kaf Hakela", which is worse than Gehenom. (Side note - There are rare cases in which a man or a woman is allowed to commit suicide, which in that case, the person is not punished).
He slanders without ever thinking of the pain he caused the victim.
He becomes an Apikores, aka. ridicules G-d's name in public.
He turns another Jew away from the path of Torah. Heaven is the place of the just, where the righteous get their true reward. Often we ask ourselves how is it that the evil people get so much in this world, and yet the righteous suffer? The answer is, that the righteous are going to get all of their reward in the next, eternal world, while their punishments are in this world. The evil are squandering their rewards in this world, so as that their punishment will be in full when they die. That is truly a right and just world. Did this help you with your question? sweatdrop
