The forest was very quiet as they made their way to the first of the river crossings.Almost hastily Two pushed on ahead, with Chaleha bringing up the rear. The mare realized she could go on ahead and wait for the girl to catch up,but for some reason she wanted to keep her in her sight. So she folowed along. Two was thinking how ironic it was to be in such a hurry, now that the newcomers had arrived, when before there had been no hurry, not much.Unless a storm would come up,then there were the hasty retreats into the safe areas. No things were changing and Two wanted to stop it if at all possible.Deep in her heart and mind she held onto the belief, that if nothing changed her parents would return. There was a ford in the river, where the water was only two foot deep at high snow melt season,so Two hoped it would be low enough for Chaleha to wade, yet not get stuck in the mud.As they approached the place she was relieved to find it a good two foot deep,so that would make the mare's crossing much better. One down and another to go.Perhaps this ford would be passable also.Thinking she could have went to the main ford, but newcomers had been seen there and she did not wish to risk discovery.

The night was moonless and silent.Except for the scurrying of small nocturnes into brush along side the trail. And Chaleha's soft thud on the carpeted floor of the meadow. This was the salt water marshes, leading onto the dunes and behind those the beach. Now the hold of the newcomers. Two wanted to get a good look at them.Wanted to be there in the morning. She had a feeling this would be the morning the newcomers would be needing a reminder who was here on this land first, and why they needed to show some respect for the land they seemed to wish to corrupt. She also wanted to be there to convince them they needed to get back on the cloud beasts and leave.
Chaleha sniffed the air.It was salty to her senses.Yet there was this new taste to the air.She curled her lip in disgust. Why did the twoleggers not run these newcomers away? Should she gather Soquili in hopes they could make them leave? She ws in deep thought when Two brought her a reed bowl filled with seed and grains. She began to munch, there were even dried apples in the mix.

Anpo sat in her favorite tree, the one that overlooked the meadows where many of the soquili that lived in and around the village grazed. As she watched the foals frisking beside their mothers, she thought back over what had happened over the last several days.
Newcomers. Normally an event of joy in the village, but this bunch seemed to be something different. Everyone was rushing around and was treating them with such fear and anger! It was somewhat confusing to the Sioux woman - what was so different about the color of skin that would make the Kawani act so? Were they not still children of the earth and sky?
Wambli had come back to the teepee the other day with an acrid smell surrounding her and a fine spriay of blood on one shoulder. Anpo had been concerned but when she cleaned the mare the blood was not hers. The mare had been frightened but unharmed, and Anpo wished she could have talked to find out what had happened!
The villagers were talking of demons and magic boomsticks that killed from distance. She had seen the boomsticks before on the long trade she had taken with her Ate and knew they were not a demon magic but some sort of...thing... the pale ones had. Her Ate himself had even made one boom! They were indeed dangerous.
Surely not everyone in the new group would be trouble. There had to be someone who would listen. The warrior had seen battle before, and knew that it was not something that she wanted to see here.
"There has to be a way to peace," she said out loud, startling a nearby squirrel. "I remember some of the words I learned on the long trade. Perhaps if I go an watch them I can find out who among the newcomers will be willing to listen so that our peoples will not destroy each other."

It had been a long night. Two had been restless on her sleeping mat in the sand.the coolness of the ocean breeze had chilled her to the bone. Her hide pack could be unfolded to make a covering, but it was a thin one at best. She awoke to a nasty smell.Little did she know what it was,but it did not smell good to her. Chaleha had stood watch all night, dozing every so often, only to spring awakeStanding behind the dune in the sand, had left her covered with blowing sand, that was now working it's way around on her coat.Causing her to itch.Batting her long dark lashes to remove the build up from around her eyes. She had a little sleep, but it only lead to sandy eyes.Placing her in a bad mood. The sun rose into it's splendor and began delivering a warmth to them both. Two climbed out of her bedding and prepared it into a bundled pack.Climbing up high enough on the dune, she peeked at the newcomers. They appeared to be having the morning meal.this angered Two,after all it was the fault of the newcomers that she was out in the sand, with no good warm breakfast. She did not want to build a fire, she might as well walk into their camp. Grumpingly she pulled a couple apples out of the food pack, offering one to Chaleha and having the other for herself.Today she had a feeling would be a busy day.

Chief Tawadi thumped his chest with a fist and grunted. "Pale faces.. I feel them coming to the village. The spirits are all around and they will protect us from these demons. Come my people, we must stand against these threats to our peace.."
He grabbed a spear and held it up in front of him. The shiny black stone tip sparkled in the sunlight...would there be blood on it at the end of the day?

Princess Soquili also felt the spirits trying to tell her something..but maybe her mind was too cloudy with worry to listen. The leaves blew around her braided tresses and she closed her brown eyes. There wasn't a sound as all the kawani people stood motionless..awaiting whatever might come their way.
Her heart pounded in her chest as she could sense something was about to happen...

The little girl randomly grabbed a pack of arrows and a bow. She wasn't sure if the pale faces were good or not, but she had a feeling they were good. Either way she still must be careful and protect her self when needed. "I'm young to fight, but I can still try." Her self confident was pretty high. Her hand was on Awnae's back, then scratching behind the mare's ear, making sure she was ready too.
Following Chamain where ever she would go, the mare waited for the pale faces to come to them. Awnae would protect Chamain from any of the humans that would dare to hurt her. Standing tall and looking strong, she lifted her head high and waited for the chief's next instructions if he had any more. The unreconised smell, that has been there for a while now, was becoming stronger and stronger. They're near...
Scared now, she got very worried, removing her hand from Awnae. The 12-year-old girl walked over to stand beside the princess. Wondering if anyone might die. "What do you think will happen?" She looked up at Princess Soquili with worried eyes.

"Blessed are ye that hunger now: for ye shall be filled. Blessed are ye that weep now: for ye shall laugh." Miguel Hernadez Soto de Santiago shouted to the other settlers traveling with him. He'd have to use the Protestant translation of the Holy Book for the others to understand him, but he knew that the Lord would forgive him if it meant that their souls were brought closer to Him. And everyone certainly needed a reminder that the Lord was looking after them on this holy crusade to the New World. But what he wouldn't give right now for the Spanish Armada in its full glory! At least then they would have full supplies instead of no food. These Protestants didn't plan well at all.
Arama walked along at a steady pace. While this was better than being trapped in that dark place for so long, she knew that it would be a while before she was allowed to stop and eat, and this made her sad. But her master urged her on, and who was she to argue with him?

Sisika cast a careful glance at Chief Tawadi and Princess Soquili. She could tell something was troubling the two leaders. She leaned against a large spear, but she prayed that they wouldn't have to use their weapons. Even though she was skilled at fighting, she had adjusted to a peaceful lifestyle now. Who were these people...
Chitsa stood beside Sisika, watching her environment carefully. Everything was so unsure of, she wondered what was going on. The two-leggers didn't seem right, especially Sisika. But soon she would understand...
Aurorealis stood beside the two females. He usually wasn't into group gatherings but he felt that it was important that he was here. He just wanted to see what was going on, because even he could feel the tension in the air. The calmness before a storm...

The day had been one long wait as the sun climbed into the sky.Two looked up wondering if the Village was okay.Since a troope of newcomers had left out leaving the majority of the invaders upon the beach. Suddenly Chaleha began to dance, stomping her hoofs into the sand.Snorting and blowing her warning. Two went down on one knee. Chaleha followed her example and went down beside her.She was blowing, testing the air,and not liking the info she was gaining. The pair was in ill-temper.The events of the days prior, and the occupation of the beach had left them in a bad mood. The night in the sands did nothing to make either one good company. Two pulled the sling from around her neck.Checking her pouch of stones, she frowned looking about. If she ran out of stones here, the only other option she had were the broken shells.Looking at those she wondered, and began to pile them close to her.Grabbing the one she suspected had burrowed into her back as she had tried to sleep. Suddenly another section of the invaders began to move onto the path, there were the strange Soquili with the newcomers on them. She grabbed Chaleha's nose and held her tight. Watching the group go off in the direction the first band had taken

Among said 'pale-faces' was young Geoffrey Clarke, who in his own right was quite pale indeed. He made his journey by foot, his mare's reins in one hand and his journal in another, with his walking stick tucked under arm. It seemed like he hadn't blinked once since they left the ship, his senses alive with new and unusual sights and sounds. He was far too interested with exploring the local flora to really notice where the others were leading, his eyes wide and glossy as he took everything in and his knuckles white from clutching at Lady's reins. This world was completely new, exciting and dangerous, and as much as it played on his nerves, he didn't want to miss a minute of it.
The golden mare led her master more than he led her as he slacked along, making sure he caught sight of everything. Though Lady too was excited, she instinctively moved with the group, keeping Geoff on track. It was a sight to see, both horse and owner with matching wide-eyed looks. Her ears and nose twitched busily as she took it all in, ecstatic just to be moving her legs again after all of that time in the ship. She occasionally stopped to take a bite of some of the grasses, an act which recieved a look of sheer horror and a good scolding from Geoff. That boy and his plants.. She snorted.

"Wha?" Crow squeaked. Wait no. She couldn't be heard.. She had to run.. But.. Sighing deeply, she reached for her small dagger. The one her father had given her so many years ago. "I can help." She said weakly. But deep down, she hoped she never had to use her dagger. Would she have to use it? Shaking, she edged closer to the circle. Crow felt better. She wasn't alone in the forest anymore.
