The avatar that appears next to your posts cannot be altered and an avatar edit. They will only display wearing the clothes that you purchase in the stores or in the market.
Avatar edits are pictures of avatars that are edited and then saved. They are for display purpose only in your signature or posts.
The only place you can change the avatar into an edit is in your profile section.

*sulks* Aww, everything has to be expensive. xd Um, Meri, just telling you...the GavSim link takes me to a blank window, the Avatar Creator or whatever it's called goes to "Page Cannot Be Displayed" all of your images in the tutorial are boxes with red x's...
Can you still use a tablet and stylus in Paint? Or do you have to buy more expensive stuffies? I heard about Corel Painter, seems effecient...do you know how much it costs? (don't bother telling me if it's even more than photoshop.) Maybe someone already asked, and you already answered, but I didn't feel like scanning ten pages...
*stares at dollar-bill* Why don't you multiply! Multiply!!

The vatar Creator was taken down a long time ago I think, and the GavSim is now hosted at gavsim.net.
I'll fix the tutorial image links in a minute. ^^
A tablet and stylus works as a replacement or companion to a regular mouse. If you can use your mouse in a program, I'm sure you can use the tablet and stylus in it as well.
I have no idea how much Corel Painter costs, but I'm sure you can find that information on the internet. Just search for the program name in a search engine such as google.com or yahoo.com.
Again, GIMP is free and good enough for avatar editing. More expensive programs are mainly for serious graphics work, and I don't think pixelling sig-pics comes into that range.
