There's been a tradition in my family, too, about names. Only, it's that the new kid gets a middle name of someone from the previous generation. My dad is Donald Troy, Troy being his father's name. I have an uncle Edward Leo, Leo being their uncle. His son is Steven Edward. Me, I'm Christina Dawne, but it's still close enough. whee My kid, if I ever have one, will take on the tradition in some form.

Silver: Probably. xd Not as many as my family (I have 4 sisters and 3 brothers -- that's 8 of us, total) but definitely 3 or 4.
Yep, he'll be the 4th with his name -- not a string of names. *lol* I can just imagine: "His name is James Henry Stewart Maxwell Elijah Richard Smith. We'll call him JHSMER for short!"
Tiana: That's a tradition in my family, too. My oldest brother's middle name is my dad's first name. My middle name is my grandma's first name, two of my brothers' middle names are my grandpa's first names, and I have a niece whose middle name is my other grandma's first name. I'm planning on reusing both my mother's and mother-in-law's names as middle names, if possible. I'd like to use my dad's, too, and make it a whole big family affair, but I think we'll leave that one for my brother to use. xd

All the kids in my family have biblical first names (Sarah, Aaron, Esti[Esther]). Our middle names are a little more random. My sister is named after our great aunt, but my middle name is just a name my mom really liked (Alyse). My brother has a really cool story about his name, though. It's traditional to name children after relatives in a lot of religions and cultures, Judaism being no exception. My parents named my little brother Aaron Joshua, after all the Aarons and Joshuas who dies in the Holocaust and have no one to name children after them. Also, traditionally for American Jews, children are given a special Hebrew name. Since most people want to give their children American names, the Hebrew name is a way to keep these names alive. My sister is Rivka, I am Prevah, my brother is Yoshua, and my parents are Avraham and Rut.

James is the family name for us, but it hasn't followed any particular pattern. (No one was a Jr. etc) My great-granfather, grandfather and uncle all are James Howard, but they all have a different middle name. In my generation, there wasn't a male Howard born, so they gave my sister the name Jamie 3nodding

Having grown up with a terribly common name, I have a yen to give my children really cool, unique names. But at the same time, I don't want to give my children hard to pronounce or spell names that they'll grow to hate >_<
I used to want to name my son Justin, but then I had a roommate named Justin for 2 years, and dated a guy named Justin...somehow, I'm not as fond of the name anymore >_<
I really like the name Charlie for a girl and Ashley for a boy...but my kids'd just KILL me.

Ashley reminds me too much of Gone With The Wind, but if you named your daughter Charlene, you could call her Charly/Charlie with no one thinking much about it. I actually read a very good, very sad book about a girl named Charly (Charlene).

*pats Tiana's shoulder sympathetically*
(It's so weird to call you Tiana -- that's my niece's name.)

Kimini *pats Tiana's shoulder sympathetically* (It's so weird to call you Tiana -- that's my niece's name.) *sniffles pitifully* cry (It's weird for me, too, since my real name's Christina. I'm more accustomed to being referred to by my other sn, Species 125)
