The present from Malstra had been quite a surprise, though he wasn't entirely sure how pleasant one part was. The first thing she had given him was a literal family tree, or rather, the seed of one. Supposedly there would be some delay in the tree's reception of information, and then its ability to display, but the former was only a few days, and the latter was only a single day. Once it had had time to grow to its full size, he would be able to know just how many descendants he had, and whether or not they were still alive. It was...something he had longed to know for quite some time, yet at the same time he was a bit nervous. What if there were large swathes of the family that he had never known who had died? Would he feel guilt for it, or would it be like noting the death of strangers? Well, thus far it had only grown enough to report the status of his children. Good to know that the death toll had not gone up any higher than last he knew. Tomorrow it would show any grandchildren he had, which he knew he probably had a few, but as of yet he had not met a single one. That could be a shocking revelation: to see just how many he had. Truly that would be the final confirmation that he was, in fact, old. Second she had given him a small ring with her family's crest upon it. She had said it would help her keep tabs on him, and it would give him status as an official member of her house. He didn't want to be a part of that society anymore, didn't want to get drawn back in to the political slaughterhouse that was his land's perverted version of law and justice, but at the same time Malstra had made the effort to reconnect with him: the only one of his children to do such a thing. And by the way they talked, he could feel in the very marrow of his bones that she was a bit more progressive than the others. She actually saw him as a parent, maybe not an equal to her mother, but still something more than a tool. That was the only reason he had consented: the vain hope that she would call upon him for social reasons, or any reason other than political.
Dashing those thoughts from his mind, he recalled that through a bit of finagling, and, well, getting Ceres to show him how to use a phone (still didn't really know how, but it was a baby step,) he had arranged for Ayluin to come over today. It would be the first non-relative to visit them, which was probably a significant fact. Despite the fact that he was the go-between, he imagined that once Ceres got used to the amicable elf, he really wouldn't be required in this conversation. Oh well, he could always find other things to do.
"Long was the hour for the valiant knight that would ne'er be sick or slain Lonely the bower in the candle light with neither kith nor kin Storm clouds over the full moon raced, as he swung to the dapple grey And man and horse to the westward faced on the eve of an All Saints' Day.
He's laid his hand on his hunting horn and with his dying breath Has blown a blast to the blazing morn that would rouse the angel of death High in the cusp of the starry night he heard his grey hawk mew As out of the misty morning light his ghostly greyhounds flew.

Early rising and getting ready, Ayluin was making his way to the other district by now. Once he had heard from his new friend that their fiancee agreed to meet up with him, they had spoken of the where and when. According to the information he had, the elf was wandering into Etoile and looked around him at the area. He hadn't been here yet and it seemed very different from Pasadena, though not in a bad way. The houses may be a lot smaller, but all the bright colors brought a smile to the moonelf's lips. This place looked really beautiful with all the colors around, it was like walking into a festival decorated street. It was really a bright sight and Ayluin enjoyed it. He didn't rush since he had left on time and he wanted to look at the paintings and colors.
It also helped a bit to distinguish the home he was supposed to go to meet Driz again and meet his fiancee. Yet Ayluin wasn't feeling nervous. He already knew Driz and he felt fine and calm around them. He was certain it wouldn't be any different now. That and he was kind of used to making new acquaintances back at the castle. The elf slipped a hand into a pocket on his long, silken shirt and pulled out a piece of paper on which he noted the address. "1110 Etoile" he muttered to himself as he read the address and nearly walked himself off the dock looking at the paper. Ayluin quickly recovered himself and put the paper back in his pocket, not wanting to distract himself anymore for now. this was perhaps the biggest difference with Pasadena, the water.
That said one could make a nasty fall in the other district as well and there was no water to break ones fall. He should have known better. Ayluin sighed in relief and shook his head, now focusing on the path before him and sticking to the side of the houses more as he read the numbers he passed. He didn't stop until he reached 1110 and smiled a bit. He found the spot it would seem. The elf turned to the door and reached out to knock three times on the door before he waited for an answer from the other side of the wood. While doing so he looked over the water as he waited. It was quite a nice sight. Leaning over a bit he could see himself reflected in the water as he stared at the clear surface.
It seemed like their little home was getting more guests than Ceres had really expected. They never really had anyone come over until literally just recently with Driz's daughter, Malstra, and now a new companion that he made! It honestly made her both excited and a bit nervous at the same time. So much, in fact, that she actually woke up early for once. She had been such a lazy butt for a few months that maybe having people coming over was the little kick in the behind that she needed to be a productive adult. Waking up early, the little Dryad spent most of the morning tiding up the house, tending to the plants (especially a whiny Mr. Prickles), and getting snacks and stuff prepared. Ceres wasn't really fully prepared when Malstra came to visit, so this time she would make it up with more effort!
Everything seemed to be in good condition when she heard three knocks against the front door. Driz's friend was here! In a bit of a hurry, Ceres rushed over to her fiancee's side, tugging on his arm like a child would. " Dear, the door, the door...! " She could've answered it... but what if this newcomers was looking forward to meeting Driz first? They did become friends first, so maybe it was more appropriate for him to be answering it?

It was a pleasant surprise to see Ceres up and about rather early. He was always up early, it was a chance for him to enjoy the morning before it started trying to burn him alive, but the same couldn't be said of Ceres of late. "Thanks for the help getting ready. Two and a half hands are better than a half, right?" Self-deprecating, yes, but he was still getting over the shock to his pride that losing an arm had caused. He had been training more, trying to adapt his style to a more singular approach, but he knew he wasn't even half the warrior he had been not so long ago. While they were preparing, he may have snuck an orange or two. Sure they were good for him and all, but to him it almost felt like candy, and he knew he was supposed to be working, not slacking off to get a bite of bliss to eat.
Finally, still fairly early in the morning, the elf of the hour arrived, or at least someone knocked on their door, and given how many guests they had had, it seemed likely to be Ayluin. For a nocturnally-themed elf, he sure did have a tendency to get early starts, now didn't he? Either way, for a moment he thought Ceres was going to rush the door, but instead her rush was to his side, hiding behind him as if she was entranced yet nervous about what lay ahead. "Alright, I'll get it." He smoothed out his plain black knit shirt (it had already been modified, sewing up the extra arm hole and removing the sleeve), then opened the door. Yep, it was his elven buddy. "Ayluin, welcome to my fiancée's home." He still had a hard time calling it his home, the notion of him owning property seemed so preposterous. "Ayluin, this is my fiancée Ceres. Ceres, this is my friend Ayluin." He wasn't sure if he should introduce what Ayluin wanted to inquire about or not, so he would at least keep quiet until they had greeted each other.
"Long was the hour for the valiant knight that would ne'er be sick or slain Lonely the bower in the candle light with neither kith nor kin Storm clouds over the full moon raced, as he swung to the dapple grey And man and horse to the westward faced on the eve of an All Saints' Day.

Waillee waillee my noble lord who wakes me from my rest There's none can heal the wounds of time that lie bloody on your breast"
Ayluin turned away from the water and back towards the door hoping he wasn't to early. He had made sure not to go to sleep to late so he could get up some earlier. Thankfully it would seem his worries were not needed as the door opened quite soon after he knocked and he was greeted by his friend Driz. "Thank you Driz, thanks for having me." he replied, still well aware of etiquette and respect which had been drilled into him from a very young age. When she was introduced, the elf looked at the other and raised a hand in greeting and smiled. "Hello Ceres, nice to meet you. I'm glad you allowed me to visit." he said directly to Ceres. Still he would focus on both since he didn't just come here for Ceres, he came here for his friend Driz too. At least in Ayluin's opinion.
Nor did he expect Driz might be on his own later on. He had noticed that his drow friend had said Ceres' house though which seemed a bit odd as they lived there too, but Ayluin wouldn't press the subject on that. He wouldn't want to risk embarrassing Driz after all. For now he was just glad to make acquaintances. Ayluin had been just as interested in meeting Driz' fiancee as he was about the fruit and he wouldn't just jump on that, that would just be rude. Besides he did hope they could be friends too, rather than just informative acquaintances. If it were up to the moonelf they would all three perhaps meet more often. Provided everyone agreed of course. Ayluin wouldn't force others to participate if they didn't want to.
Driz was still going on about this being only her house, huh? They've been together for a good while now, and ever since they've been engaged, she spent a good portion of her time adjusting things around the house so that the two would both be comfortable. Letting out a small chuckle, Ceres playfully nudged her future husband in his side. " It's our home, dear~ Anyways, we're glad that you came to visit us, Ayluin! It's nice to meet ya. " The dryad greeted in a cheerful tone as she ushered the group to move into the living room for snacks and such. Out on the small coffee table laid a fake wooden tray with plates of fruit, cookies, and any sweet that she could fit onto it, along with some tea. It was probably over kill for a simple visit, but Ceres had to redeem herself as a good house host! Heck, when she and Driz first met, she basically tried to feed him like a grandmother would to her grandkids. Feeding until the brink of explosion.
Of course, Mr. Prickles was in the living room on the same table as well. He was going off again about how Driz should be kicked out. Typical bull crap that he liked to spew on and on. " Mr. Prickles. Driz is here to stay, besides, you don't have the legs - or the arms - to throw him out yourself. Now behave. " Picking up the little cactus' pot, Ceres traveled into the kitchen where she placed him on the windowsill in the kitchen. Wait... was it weird to have a convo like that in front of Driz's friend? He was an elf, so he certainly must've met other Dryads, right? Welp, hopefully she didn't make her first impression a weird one...

Fortunately he had been here a while now, as before he would have started at the nudge, but these days he was able to keep still. "Right...our, sorry." It was going to take some getting used to before he defaulted to calling it their home, but hopefully he could adapt before they were married, he couldn't imagine how embarrassing it would be for her to have such a slow mate. Oh...right, mate wasn't the word used around here, it was...husband, he believed. Yet another thing for him to have to get used to. He didn't have to ponder upon the matter for long for soon Ceres was herding them towards the living room where she had already set out...repast for a small unit? How many people was she expecting to show up? Oh wait, that's right, it was Ceres they were talking about, she would probably prepare the same amount for if it were just her and him. It was rather endearing how motherly she was to the entire world: he really couldn't imagine being that open with acquaintances much less a complete stranger. Practically as soon as they sat down though, his mortal enemy apparently started going off about how she should get rid of him. He gave a slight shrug and turned to Ayluin, "I told you there was a plant here who had it in for me. Fortunately, as of yet, he can't launch his needles at me. At least the others seem to tolerate me well enough. Care for some tea?" he asked as he was pouring a bit for himself. It was a tedious process, having to do everything with only one hand (of course the one that was lacking half of two fingers: not like fate would take the already damaged hand), but these weeks had taught him how to be, well, functional despite the limitations.

Ayluin chuckled a bit when Ceres corrected his friend. It would seem it wasn't to bad of a subject. Duly noted. When he was directly spoken to again the elf smiled and nodded. Before he could reply though, they were quickly ushered to the living room. Though slightly unusual, Ayluin couldn't help but finding it rather cute, she sure seemed a bundle of activity and happiness. This seemed a sharp contrast with how Driz was at times, from what he gathered during their meeting at the coffee shop. But perhaps that could all change for his friend too with Ceres around. "Wow." he said when he saw the table they were herded too and blinked a bit. That was a lot of food for three people. Unless of course some friends of Ceres were coming too. From what the moonelf understood at their last meeting he was Driz' only friend next to Ceres.
They barely set down when suddenly Ceres spoke out of nowhere to someone else, someone he couldn't see and then picked up a plant and moved it away. The name was a curious one, but then Driz did tell him that his fiancee was able to understand plants and that he knew a plant here had it out for him. Specific knowledge which could only be gained directly from the plant themselves. Further more the drow confirmed it once more about the plant and Ayluin looked curiously back over to Ceres. The only people he knew to be able to speak to plants at such a level were the ents and dryads of his land. Well there had been one mage claiming he could but they turned out to be already one foot into the looneybin. Ayluin had always enjoyed their company though. Still she looked human and knew for a fact that ents could not change their appearance which left one possibility. "This is certainly surprising. But Driz did warn me about such a plant in the home." Ayluin chuckled.
"Now I know what you meant with understanding plants, Driz." the elf said to his friend before he looked back at Ceres. "Correct me if I am wrong, but are you a Dryad? That is the only explanation I can come up with at the moment." Ayluin asked and smiled. Of course it didn't mind what they were, heck the moonelf could even see a friend in an orc as long as they wouldn't be trying to kill him, his people or his friends. When he heard his friend's question though he was distracted for a moment by it and looked at them. It was clear they were struggling and Ayluin's first instinct would be to take over. But he considered the fact that might not help his friend at all. "Yes please, thank you Driz." he replied to them. He did remember his mage tutor teaching him that pitying the ones to do with less or missing part of their body wouldn't make them feel better.
Of course where Ayluin came from none of the injuries around the kingdom had been by war, it had been peaceful for quite a while now. "Well, let's hope he never learns to use his needles that way either." Ayluin said and smiled. "Driz told me you were good with understanding plants Ceres, but I didn't expect it was meant in the literal sense." he spoke to them both not wanting to exclude any though it would be a lot easier if they were sitting together. He was glad they invited him though, it was always good to meet with friends and make new ones.
" Heh, Mr. Prickles is all bark and no bite! He talks a lot of crap for a little cactus his size. I think he just has a superiority complex. " Ceres replied as she returned back to the living room. Taking a seat, she then began to pour herself some tea, as well. It was green tea based with some fruit infusions. It was what Driz had when the two first met, so she's always kept her pantry full of it, along with his favorite citrus fruit! One could say she was spoiling or babying him, but she didn't care in the slightest! The dryad always had a maternal attitude, especially for loved ones. Upon hearing their guest speak up again, Ceres simply smiled with a nod. " Bingo, you're correct! I usually have branches sticking out from my head like horns, but I tend to just stay in a more human-like form for convenience. It's a bit difficult to talk around my house with my branches getting stuck on everything. " While she did like her human form, she tended to lean more towards her natural self. Maybe if they saved enough money, they could possibly move into a house with a little more space. Hopefully, if they were to move, Ceres wouldn't just fill up empty spaces with even more plants. Their home already looked like a mini forest, but it was mainly a way to give herself some company.
" I've been talking to plants all of my life. They kept me company while I was travelling on my own for a few centuries. But now that I have Driz, I've been trying to get better at branching out for new companions. Like, more friends that aren't confined to soil and pots. " Oof. She hoped she didn't make herself sound like a shut in. She never truly shut herself in, she was just a bit too weird for "normal" people. Or at least that's what she had always thought. Reaching out for a few cookies that she had laid out on the tray, Ceres nibbled on a few. Only Driz and herself knew how much of a messy ravenous beast she could get when she was really hungry, but in front of company she was going to have a little more self control! There was no way she was going to embarrass her fiance in front of his friend. Amber eyes glanced back over to Ayluin. " So, what brings you here today? We don't normally get visitors, so when Drizzy Dear mentioned you I got excited~ Hopefully I'm making a good impression. I'd love for you to come visit us again in the future! "

Silently, he relished in the torment that his mortal enemy was getting. For him, while he didn't care for having a mortal enemy, the fact that it was a rather small plant was reassuring: it wasn't like back home where his enemies preferred to stealthily kill him with either a blade or magic. The downgrade meant he had finally found somewhere that he could exist in moderate peace. Sipping at the tea, he discovered it was his beloved fruit infused kind, like what she served him the day they met! He didn't think they had been using it sparingly, so was it either a very large set, or had she purposefully gone out and gotten more? Not too long ago, he would have assumed that if she had gotten more, it was just because she liked it and for some reason he was getting to share in the benefit. But this was Ceres he was talking about, she was the one who had started crying when they didn't have any oranges left. She was definitely the type of person to quietly keep a plentiful stock of things he liked. Some might consider that she coddled him a bit much, but after the centuries of torture and abuse, as long as he could still defend, a bit of coddling was a welcome relief.
He was definitely starting to fall out of the conversation now, but he was happy enough just listening to them talk and seeing Ceres enjoying herself around someone new for the first time in a long while. It would seem he had been right in choosing Ayluin as a stepping stone to get her back to her pre-ex attack self. Her comment about wanting more friends was a tad tragic, but he perfectly well understood. Currently, Ceres was his only true friend. Sure, he had a bond with Ayluin, but it was just too early to peg such a lofty title upon it. He had been betrayed far too many times to trust someone so easily, at least not until they showed substantial proof of loyalty. Well, at least Ayluin was close enough to be on a first name basis...wait, had he ever actually mentioned his name? Ayluin had introduced himself, but at the time Driz was still under the impression that the elf would soon try to murder him. And he couldn't recall an introduction since..."damn, my mind is already slipping. It would seem I will not meet death before senility." Ever so slowly he noticed how dainty Ceres was being with the cookies. Well, he was proud of her for showing such self-control, but why had it taken him so long to notice, and why was he missing parts of the conversation? "I'm falling asleep, aren't I? This sedentary life seems to have dulled my edges more than I thought." Once there was a slight break in the conversation, he went ahead and stood up only to lean against the chair just a bit. "My apologies. I am not accustomed to sitting for long stretches. I have to stand lest I get tediously restless."And fall asleep he failed to add.
"Long was the hour for the valiant knight that would ne'er be sick or slain Lonely the bower in the candle light with neither kith nor kin Storm clouds over the full moon raced, as he swung to the dapple grey And man and horse to the westward faced on the eve of an All Saints' Day.

After their quest for their future together ended in success, it seemed like the rest of their days afterwards seemed much happier. Not that it wasn't joyful before! Actually having proof that their love would be a permanent thing made Ceres much more confident and just excited to see what would happen with them both. That feeling lasted for a few weeks until she started feeling very ill. For a little while, the feeling of slight nausea was easy to ignore. Ceres had been able to go to work just fine until just recently a few days ago. The more she seemed to try and ignore it, the more prevalent it became. It soon got to the point were she had to call off work because she couldn't barely move around much without either vomiting or feeling dizzy and light-headed. Ugh, the dryad felt absolutely miserable! It didn't help that now the slightest smell of food would set her off into a gagging fit.
This morning, Ceres tried to get herself to eat something. She wasn't able to keep much down besides water, so she tried feeding herself some light chicken broth for breakfast. She got at least 3 spoonfuls in before she started feeling sick to her stomach. " Ugh... What's going on with me? I should probably go to the hospital. " As someone who was generally very healthy, her current condition was starting to worry her a lot. Driz also had to be extremely worried as well; he was a very protective partner, after all!

It had been a time of bliss for a while after the trial. They spent practically every second they could together, and were assuredly more passionate when alone together than they had been before. Well, after he recovered from his brush with heat-related illness. But Ceres was the greatest nurse in the world, so he recovered quickly, and it seemed as if the rest of their days would be spent in such bliss. Unfortunately, several weeks later the greatest nurse in the world was sick, and Driz had absolutely no idea what was causing it. He hated to admit it, but he supposed they could be more different than they admitted. Could it be that dryads were prone to a whole litany of other problems that he couldn’t even begin to imagine? Would she always be immune to something he caught because it was a pure humanoid issue and she was half and half? Damn it! Why couldn’t I have studied up on this kind of thing back when I was in the Underdark!? It was easy for him to berate himself like that, but the truth of the matter was that it wasn’t his place back there. If they were on a mission, there was usually a cleric who could cast a cure, and if they were back home, well, the clerics were there too but whether or not they helped was another matter. These past few days he had been hyper-vigilant about keeping all potential stressors away from her. He would still eat every now and then throughout the day, but nothing that would create a strong smell, and he would always wash his hands with unscented soap afterwards and even brush his teeth every time so that not even his breath was offensive. He slept extra lightly, startling awake every time she so much as twitched or mumbled. I haven’t seen anything like this since the twins… Not that that info was useful in the slightest, this had to be some sort of virus or something, there was no way it could be morning sickness. When she decided it was time she get a professional opinion, he could only sigh but nod his head in agreement. ”We should. Let’s get you dressed then I’ll hail a cab for us.” Well, and of course he would get dressed and bring along one of his nicer daggers, but he figured that part was sort of assumed.
"Long was the hour for the valiant knight that would ne'er be sick or slain Lonely the bower in the candle light with neither kith nor kin Storm clouds over the full moon raced, as he swung to the dapple grey And man and horse to the westward faced on the eve of an All Saints' Day.

Ceres never felt this sick at all in her life. Hell, she didn't even feel that sick after that time she and Driz went out to the bar for food and drinks. That felt like ages ago... Getting up from her seat the the table, the dryad placed a hand on her stomach as she moved fairly slow. It almost felt like any quick movements would make her body purge anything in her stomach. " Ugh... I hate feeling like this... Hopefully the doctors can fix me up. " Everyone in the house was worried - even the plants. They all quietly murmured to themselves while a few other prayed for good health to her. Whatever this was, they hoped it would be resolved soon. Finally making it to the bedroom, Ceres just pulled out a comfy white t-shirt and some cozy sweatpants. She didn't care about looking good when she felt like crap. She was just about to head back towards the living room when her stomach started acting up once more. A hand quickly went to cover her mouth as she made a beeline towards the bathroom. Almost instantly, the poor girl went into a gagging fit before expelling into the toilet. She barely ate anything, so not much really came out besides a bit of bile. Yuck...
