Samson's stone - already imbued - was adopted by a demon family in Asphodel. Xyr stone was part of a small initiative to introduce less-common races to the hub of modern civilisation. As a result, Samson has never visited xyr 'true' homeland of the desert and is happy to keep it that way. The young naga was never treated differently, and grew up alongside a dozen adopted and family-born siblings. A clear clique formed between the 'actual' children of xyr adopted parents, but there were so many adopted children that got along that it hardly mattered. Samson was appreciative of xyr large, loving family and they let xyr be whoever xe wished to be.
From the age of a freshling, Sam was attracted to drama and theatre. The sparkles, the music, the drama of it all - xe couldn't resist. Keen to encourage their children to do what they felt drawn to, Samson's parents enrolled xyr in a drama club to learn acting and musical singing. Xe showed an aptitude for the theater, never letting xyr tail get in the way of dramatic movements. Xe occasionally got mocked by other students for being a naga in theatre, but xyr seemingly-permanent happy personality generally attracted similarly friendly people. Samson quickly became universally loved but not popular - a fine line in school. Xyr wasn't bothered by any of it, of course, as long as xe could sing and act as xe desired!
People often commented that Xyr was clearly in the wrong house at school, and yet xe did show an aptitude for history and psychology. Xyr teachers sometimes observed Sam employing what he learnt in psychology classes in every day conversations seamlessly. Xyr was often encouraged to pursue a less 'frivolous' future than theatre, such as psychology or even teaching. However, with a smile on xyr face and a skip in xyr step, xe always declined. Theatre was where xyr thrived, and plans to continue to do so for the foreseeable future.

naomi one of the youngest of the demons in xyr family but still one the eldest children overall, samson always looked up to naomi. she seemed to take on the role of looking after xyr and the other adopted children which helped unite them all into one family. xe always tried to get along with naomi, but her isolated demeanour made it difficult. samson hopes that as time passes they'll eventually develop a more personable relationship.

Naomi was born into a loving family in Asphodel - too loving, she occasionally thought. Her parents wanted a large clan and not only imbued half a dozen stones themselves, but also adopted a similar amount of other races. Naomi was one of the middle children born by her parents but, due to the later-adopted children, was one of the eldest in the family. Her older siblings tended to stick to themselves, not being unpleasant towards the adopted stones but clearly not as interested as they were in each other. This behaviour led to Naomi taking on the mantle of 'protective big sister'. As a favour to her parents and due to her naturally 'saviour' disposition, Naomi took it upon herself to welcome new members to the family and make sure they felt safe and comfortable in their new home.
Due to her nature to try and save others, Naomi's parents suggested she focus her studies on childcare or adoption services, but the demon insisted she wasn't interested in such fields. She may enjoy saving others, but she was quickly frustrated by others' ineptitude to help themselves and tended to isolate herself emotionally. As a result, Naomi was frustrated going through school, unsure where her future would lead her and annoyed by the constraints being placed on her by her parents and teachers. Despite not being the first-born, her contribution to the household led to the family spotlight being placed on her, leading to even more pressure and frustration.
It wasn't until she was an Academy senior that she discovered the path she would take when one of her teachers had arranged a workshop presented by the local hospital. Naomi's class learnt about first aid and how to respond during medical emergencies, and as she listened to what the nurses and doctors went through every day, the young demon knew that's what she wanted to do. Saving people without getting too involved, the romanticised aspect of the industry, the prestige that came from the position... it all sounded perfect to her. With her mind focused, Naomi immediately set out to achieve her goal of becoming a surgeon. Determined to ace her classes, Naomi fought hard to earn the grades she needed to attend Asterion and learn medicine. As she is studying, Naomi is doing shift-work as a nurse at one of the smaller hospitals, picking up basic skills and terminology that will help her on her journey.

samson one of naomi's adopted siblings, sam is one of the youngest and the only naga. naomi felt for xyr and how difficult it would have been in xyr position, but sam was constantly flamboyant and theatrical. naomi appreciates this for xyr own mental state but has tended to avoid the naga as the two grew older - naomi wasn't a huge fan of theatre, and even less so of the performers themselves. perhaps in time the two will grow closer, particularly when samson graduates and closes that gap between them.

all these things i've tried, boy be cute, be dumb, be wise, be young so don't tell me what to fear in the darkness in this atmosphere
Clare was born into seemingly loving parents in a seemingly wonderful family. While shade hybrids are still uncommon, her father was one of the few who came down to Below for business opportunities. He met a beautiful young baphomet whom he eventually married and the result was Clare; one of the first shade hybrids woken in Below. Clare didn't realise the significance of this until she was older, but she grew up in a household where she thought she was loved, resulting in a young girl with a kind, soft heart. However, things weren't perfect; both her parents were constantly critical of her - especially her mother - expecting her to be intelligent and well-presented, quick to point out her flaws but slow to give genuine compliments. Inevitably this caused an incredibly low self esteem in the young hybrid and a deep self-loathing that would never truly go away.
Clare was shocked that despite her kindness and eagerness to please others, she was the brunt of bullying at school. It was almost always about her appearance - not only were shades considered strange, but her tail was particularly 'freakish'. As a defence mechanism, Clare's natural intelligence turned to wit and sarcasm, but deep down her heart was still soft and wished nothing more than to love and be loved. Under the constant pressure of her parents, Clare did her best to achieve good grades at the Academy, but she was often distracted by her interest in behavioural studies and blogging. Of course, her parents wanted her to go into business, and would hear none of her desires to pursue her passions.
Graduating with above-average grades and a witty charisma, Clare always hid the severe anxiety and depression she'd developed during her time at the Academy; she didn't want to be a burden onto anyone. If only to appease her parents, Clare decided to attend university, but much to their dismay she chose to major in sociology at Asterion. Ignoring their harassment over the issue, she was determined to pursue a career in behavioural studies, always looking into the psychology of everyone but herself. Upon graduation, she decided her first study would be on one of her races'; the swampland of the shades. She was curious to see if they were all as ambitious and critical as her father, and their reaction to a hybrid that involved a race of Below would be fascinating. Although truly her most intriguing discovery would be of one individual in particular.
Clare quickly learnt that the shades' general reaction to her was negative, but not overwhelmingly so. They had been isolated for so long, Clare observed that she was simply seen as unappealing more than anything. Writing down her observations - no matter how hurtful they may be - Clare considered her journey successful if not a bit dull. Wanting to expand her studies, she roamed beyond the swamp, hoping to find isolated tribes or something else to study. What she found was more interesting and serendipitous than she could have imagined; a hallowed shade. Of course, she immediately called out to him, desperate to talk to him and find out who he was. The hallowed seemed to become instantly nervous, fleeing from the very sight of her. Clare couldn't help but laugh at someone having such an extreme reaction to her, and she couldn't stop herself from playfully chasing him. His large claws meant he surely could have outran her if he wished, but all afternoon she managed to chase him, before finally pinning him down and demanding his name. She introduced herself and discovered that the hallowed - Chris - had never even heard of the world outside his home. The hybrid delighted in telling him all about her home and the many places and people of the world.
After meeting every afternoon in secret, Clare's fascination with Chris grew more and more. His life was so sad to her; caged in a toxic household. She often insisted he leave his home and make a life of his own, but the hallowed's blind commitment to his family was obvious. As the two grew closer and, somewhat inevitably, fell in love, Clare was even more insistent that he come with her when she returned Below; she could tell all he needed was a change of environment, and his potential was being wasted. But more than that, she knew they couldn't truly be together until he left his family. One day, at their usual meeting place, Chris arrived incredibly distraught. He revealed that he'd had a row with his parents and was too ashamed to return. Clare obviously felt incredibly sympathetic towards her love, but was somewhat relieved that she could finally bring him back to Asphodel. She suggested he enrol in community college to study something he enjoyed - nursing - and used the contacts she'd formed in the scholarly world to get him a placement. They now live happily together as she writes her paper, and Clare is immeasurably excited to start their life together.
Clare's most recent accomplishment was saving one of the scholars she most admired in her field, Jason Bright. He was an expert in groups that branched off from major civilisations to develop their own cultures, and Clare found his studies fascinating. However, after some research she learned her had disappeared twenty years ago while leading a solo field research expedition into a forest Above to uncover the truth of some rumoured sluagh civilisation. Determined to continue his research and find out what happened to Professor Bright, Clare hired a bounty hunter named Marie to lead some contractors into the forest with her. She brought Chris in case they needed a medic and were quick to gather the supplies they needed. Once they arrived in the forest they were ambushed by the sluagh who turned out to be part of a dark cult. Managing to escape the heavy fighting - the tribe wasn't ready to fight a group of armed bounty hunters - she made her way into their encampment, finding Jason Bright imprisoned in a primitive cage. After releasing him and finding he was in a terrible physical state, she tried to lead him back to their group but instead he brought her to the location of his daughter, Sed'Hera. Clare is still uncertain what the cult's intent was with Sed'Hera and Jason, but after discovering the truth the daughter unleashed hell upon the cultists. Clare was shocked and appalled by the dark magic she used and realised she had discovered a dark, twisted soul. Along with Jason they tried to convince her to return with them to Asphodel but she refused; due to Professor Bright's state they had no choice but to leave without Sed'Hera. Clare is now often visiting Jason in hospital to help him come to terms with his psychological injuries due to his imprisonment, but her new goal is clear; help his daughter, Sed'Hera and, if possible, finish his paper on the tribe.

when clare hosted the expedition to the lost lands to find doctor horn, she was an anxious mess the entire time. the one small moment of joy came from a playful family of flitterats, one of whom accompanied clare for the rest of the journey. clare named the small creature hope - seeing him playing with his family and his tenacious attitude gave clare a small glimmer of hope. she wished nothing more than to be reunited with peter horn, and with the calming presence of the small familiar, she was able to hold it together until the whole ordeal was over. clare has always kept hope nearby since that experience, even bringing him to work and to lectures - it's rare for people to see clare without hope riding on milky's head.

marie was a gift from chris after their first year together below. clare was immediately enamoured by the vespercat's beauty and grace, and often brings her into the office to laze about. if marie isn't napping, she is usually looking for treats or pampering, and clare is only too happy to provide. many of clare's hours have been wasted grooming the spoiled familiar and decorating her with beautiful bows and flowers.

sebastian the child chris imbued with two strangers, clare had little choice but to raise sebastian as her own son. clare was furious at first, hating to even look at the infant that was a result of what she considered adultery. still, her love for her partner helped her move past her anger, and she was determined to have sebastian view her as his actual mother. scared of him not loving her due to the lack of actual relationship between them, clare has been overly lenient with her son, and as a result he hardly respects her boundaries and authority. clare is struggling with this dynamic, but she hopes they'll overcome it as he grows older and matures.
fallow clare's only true child, fallow is the absolute treasure of her life. knowing that sebastian was not interested in forming a relationship with her, clare insisted that she and chris imbue a child together, and now she has fallow to dote on. she is determined to have fallow enjoy her company unlike her other son, and so she spends a near-troubling amount of time with fallow. Her son is kind and patient, and clare is incredibly proud of how her child is growing up - and she intends to be there every step of the way.

chris her current partner and love of her life, clare could not be more enamoured with chris. she practically lives to serve him and make him happy, delighting with every inch he gives as she chips away at his mental walls. their personalities are wildly different, but their commitment to each other is a strong enough similarity to make their relationship hold strong. clare hopes that one day she can convince chris to completely open himself up to the world, but for now she'll settle for having his heart all to herself.
verum another hallowed shade clare met when she was studying the swamp, verum's extreme mutations and the reaction her society had on her was an important element in clare's current paper. she was happy to tell the hallowed anything she wanted to know about below and enjoyed her company. clare was delighted to hear verum had moved to asphodel and was more than happy to help her find her way. along with setting her up at leviathan, clare maintains regular communication with the hallowed to ensure she settles in well in below.
sed'hera the daughter of one of clare's most admired scholars, sed'hera was discovered to be the victim of a crazed sluagh cult obsessed with dark magic and revenge. after leading an expedition to save the scholar, clare met sed'hera and helped free her from her mental shackles of her upbringing. clare tried to convince the hybrid to return with her to asphodel, but sed'hera was determined to stay. clare intends to return to the forest one day to spend more time with sed'hera, hoping she can not only learn more about her past but also help ease her into civilisation.

Genesis was only a young child when his parents moved to Asphodel. They hoped to invest all they had in a bold business venture in Below, following the 'city dream' advertised by the travelling merchants. Unfortunately, no one told them that most small businesses fail upon start-up, and Genesis' family lost everything they had. He was forced into a life of poverty and had no choice but to learn street smarts to keep his family alive in the squalor of downtown. Genesis began to make money here and there through petty theft but he was an amateur and quickly caught by the local police force. He was expecting a swift and harsh punishment, but the officer saw his potential (and didn't want to deal with the political disaster of arresting a shade child). He was offered small sums of money to find out information on local criminals and proved surprisingly good at it.
Gensis continued to work for the local police, often sniffing out criminals and following trails that even their trained detectives hadn't noticed. When asked about this, the young shade admitted that he was using simple shadow magic to stay hidden and hear things others couldn't. This intrigued the force and his struggling parents - now both working low-wage jobs - and it seemed Genesis' path was suddenly laid out for him; he'd become a detective and work with the local police force. They explained that he already had the basic skills from years of working for them and should instead try and hone his magical abilities. So, with the support of the local government and the money saved up by his parents, Genesis was sent to Leviathan to learn shadow magic.
Genesis couldn't help but feel bitter that no one had ever asked if that is what he wanted. In fact he had no interest in shadow magic, feeling it had no relevance to mysteries and problem solving, his favourite part of the detective work. Instead, he decided to major in temporal magics, seeing as it was often used in investigations and incredibly useful in the field against criminals. Despite his races' difficulty in learning new magic, Genesis' persistent nature and refusal to fail allowed him to learn any spells he wished. Once he graduated, he shocked everyone who knew him by deciding to be a private investigator. Most everyone was furious at him - they'd provided for him so that he would help the local police, but instead he would inevitably butt heads with them as he sought his own detective work. Happy to be isolated from previous contacts with just the company of his tail, Zoey, Genesis moved into a studio apartment to begin his career. While his work has resulted in a few uncomfortable situations where wires were crossed with the police force, his biggest issue is with independent bounty hunters. One feisty chimera in particular - recently found to be named Marie - crosses his path more than any others. The two have formed a small rivalry; it doesn't help that she employs fire magic, one of the few innate fears Genesis possesses.

genesis found a forlorn nezubat at once of his investigation sites - the familiar had been owned by the victim and seemed miserable to be alone in the apartment. feeling a twang of sympathy, the shade asked the landlord what would become of the familiar and was appalled to hear he would be turned out onto the streets. knowing how unpleasant being a street rat could be, genesis decided to take the creature home with him instead. while he doesn't have much spare time to spend with the familiar, he affectionately named him 'partner' and often talks aloud and pretends to bounce ideas off the nezubat as he's working on a case.

genesis was working late on one particularly cold, rainy night, wishing nothing more than to be out of the alleyway and at home with a glass of whiskey. unfortunately, he still had to find some evidence for his case, but it felt like a dead-end - any footprints in the alley would have been washed away. it was then he spotted a colourful groffu peering up at him, before making a small ribbit and hopping away. to this day, genesis has no idea why he followed the familiar, but doing so lead him straight to a key piece of evidence. glenvale - named after the street they met in - has been with genesis ever since; sometimes the shade even takes the groffu on investigations for good luck.
