Laying down a bomb like that on a girl like her was just asking to become an athiest. What was Maebe supposed to say? Was it right to lie and tell him she was sure there was? Was it better to honestly admit she'd stopped believing in a God long ago? Was she ready to take the responsibility of Dawson's fall from grace? (In case all that s**t ended up being real after all?) "I don't know either." She breathed out shakily, scared of more than just the truth. "But if he is.. he's got a lot of explaining to do." She paused, and then let out a chuckle. "To you, I mean. Not me. Devil doesn't have to explain a thing to me when I die, we're just going to look at one another and nod. Like yeah, this seems about right."

He was a little too drained to get into that conversation. Hell, he shouldn't have brought this one up. Weakly Dawson peeled himself off and began to wipe at his face vigorously with his shirt, taking several deep breaths so that he didn't break down again. "Gawd, I'ma mess," he mumbled, his shoulders slumping. "You shouldn' lemme inta yer room no more, I jus' cause drama..."

"Yeah, you're right." She murmured, nodding sagely. "Because I'm just so drama free." She kissed his left shoulder, and then his right. "I'll take your drama anyday."

Dawson snorted softly. "No kiddin'...Suppose it was my turn, huh..." God, his head was starting to hurt. "Held onta that fer...s**t, more than a year now..." He just hated to divulge his problems was all, especially ones nobody could fix. Without much thought put into it, he pressed his lips first to her forehead and then to hers. "Thanks fer listenin', hun. Didn' know how much I needed it."

She watched him, her eyes piercing even as he kissed her forehead, but fluttering closed for a split second when his lips touched hers. "You've never talked about it?" She asked, without a trace of judgment. Dawson, unlike anyone else, knew how much she understood withholding trauma. "I know it's hard, but, everybody needs somebody to talk to. No more holding back. I've got you." She wanted to be this, for him. It felt like she could be strong, for once.

"Why would I? S'not somethin' anyone can help now, n' I don' like soundin' like a big baby like I did. Plus how you gonna bring that up in conversation anywho?" He rubbed his nose on his sleeve and sniffled again, feeling more and more like a kid under Maebe's gaze. "'Sides, you was busy takin' the drama limelight fer a while, blind scare n' all. Then I had a small crisis with Chris, Horace's fallout with that dickwipe, the whole Caly thing, Chris's goddamn clone, Taym's bullshit, Meri leavin'..."
It was the same as always: other people before himself.
"Mean, guess I thrive off worryin' 'bout other people, y'know? Not the other way around. Gotta be the solid one here. Dependable, strong." A small, sad smile tugged his lips. "I got a bleedin' heart, though. Gets me in trouble."

That was such a long, exhausting list. He thrived on helping others, but she wanted a nap just thinking about how many people he cared about. "I do not envy you, Dawson Grace." She said in the middle of a big sigh. "I pick the people I care about very, very carefully, and God, love? I could count them on one hand. Even that's too much for me sometimes. Your heart's not bleeding, sweetheart. It's expanding. Always getting bigger for anybody smart enough to crawl in." And that was why she felt so claustrophobic in there. She would never own all of Dawson's heart, herself. Maybe no one could. Was he right after all? "My heart's a tiny piece of coal Santa gave me for Christmas once." She chuckled out with a smirk. "Still good for making a nice fire though."

"It's prob'ly smarter t'be pickier," he admitted as he wiped excess moisture from his eye. "'Specially here. But I never said I was smart, heh. Already accepted I'm kinda doomed t'care, fer better or fer worse."
But after listing them all out, Dawson did look exhausted. Part of him wished he could be like Maebe, be more selective and have less of a hassle in his life. But it wouldn't feel right to. Un-Christian-like. He couldn't help but wonder how that would play out if he ever did fall in love.
"Tha's 'cause you naughty all the time," he pointed out with a little grin. "But yers is the one that gets put under pressure n' comes out a diamond."

She squirmed and made several childish noises of discontent, before letting out a grunt and burying into him. "******** you." She responded, with the kind of embarrassed affection that made the words sound like love. "If my heart's going to become a diamond anytime soon, you best be sure I'm ripping it out and turning it into a ring."

Well, we tried, he almost said, but instead Dawson chuckled and pat her back, subtly trying to clean up the mess he had made therein.
"So a real blood diamond, huh?" he quipped, looking satisfied with her response. "Well, only the best fer Yer Grace a'course. 'Specially after havin' t'sit through all that."

"A real blood diamond." She repeated, letting it settle for a minute before taking a deep breath and nodding her head. "Okay. It's changed. I know what I want for Christmas, now." She smiled, innocently for all of a second, before breaking out into a s**t-eating grin. "Okay. Maybe not a real blood diamond. But you can get me some blood red diamond jewelry instead. Maybe earrings. And then you can force me to take you out to dinner a lot because I made you go broke on Christmas. Hurray!"

Dawson couldn't help but laugh at the sight. "Well at least ya made it easy fer me! I'll see if Santy's down fer helpin' a bro out." He then booped her nose with a grin of his own. "You better be ready t'handle my appetite, honey, 'cause I'll hitcha right back in that wallet a'yers."

"I've been saving up for years, for this very moment." She'd been saving up for years because she was an intolerable hoarder. If she could turn her savings account into gold coins, she'd sit on it and breathe fire. Thaw rumbled approvingly at the imagery. "Don't you worry, Sir Grace." She assured, as she nestled back down into him. "Your princess is loaded and ready."

Hmm...Well if she was actually that loaded...
"I got an idea." The fact that Maebe was being cradled and slightly rocked might have tipped her off to bribery. "What if we went n' made a giant Christmas feast fer everyone then? Could be in the cafeteria, or I could host it at the house 'r somethin'...It'd really get people t'gether with a sense a'unity, y'know?"

Regardless of the rocking, Maebe turned around in his arms and closed her eyes. "Goodnight, Dawson." She clipped out icily.
