Why was Chance being so secretive anyway? What was his little surprise? He knew they'd be out stargazing, that much was easy to know. He decided dwelling on it might dull the unveiling, and let it be.

He padded out into the hallway, shutting and locking his door behind him.

"Lead the way."

Chance wasn't so much trying to be secretive as he was just not used to doing gestures for people, grand, small, or otherwise, and was kind of winging it. But he did have an idea in mind; the question was whether or not Otto would find it silly or good.

He led the two of them to the stairwell, but did not go down. Instead, Chance took the steps leading up, continuing until they reached a small door at the very top of the stairwell that looked as though it was supposed to be locked. It wasn't - Chance had discovered this already - and he pushed it open, stepping outside and holding open the door.

The rooftop of the dormitory building stretched out, flat and quiet and completely devoid of people, the sky above starting to turn a blanket of blue-black as night slowly fell.

It was odd, and refreshing. The ascent upstairs clearly indicated a different route from their usual hang outs. When the reached the door and stepped out, he was treated to a quiet, high up and grand skyline to admire.

The blond slowly walked out onto the roof, staring upward and out at the slowly darkening night sky.

"I ain't been up here. Didn't know it was open.."

He walked a few paces over to a spot that wasn't too near the edge but wasn't directly in the middle and set his bags down.

"I heard about it from Peyton a few months ago," said Chance with a smile, as he glanced skyward. "I've come up here a few times since, it's usually deserted, since everyone just assumes it's locked most of the time."

He knelt down beside his things and started to set up the telescope first, which wouldn't take too long.

"She's my cousin." Otto mentioned conversationally. He stood near Chance, hovering around and looking for an opportunity to pitch in. He 'helped' by flopping the two pillows he brought with him nearby.

His eyebrows rose in mild surprise. "I didn't know that," said Chance, turning to look at Otto over his shoulder as he set the telescope onto its stand, screwing it into place. "That's pretty cool, though, that you have relatives here, right? I wouldn't think a lot of people did."

With it all set up, Chance peered through the lens, shifting the scope until it was directed at the spot he wanted. He backed away and then smiled at Otto, shifting behind him.

"Okay," he said, "Here, scoot forward, I want to show you something."

"Yeah.. it's neat. Been takin' me a while to get used to it. I have a brother too..." Which was it's own can of worms, really. Seeing as he'd spent the majority of his life believing he was an only child. Majority of it believing his parents were his birth parents. The fact they weren't came with many mixed emotions at first.

Otto blinked, moving forward and sitting near Chance. "What is it?"

His face registered surprise. "I've never heard you talk about a brother before," said Chance, tilting his head to look curiously at Otto. "That's really neat."

He shifted to sit behind Otto, one of his hands on his shoulders.

"This is going to be a little nerdy, but you showed me your favorite thing - drums - so this is me showing you one of my favorite things. If you look to the right, you'll see the Draco constellation," said Chance, his voice low, thrumming with pleasure. "It's circumpolar in the north, so it's always there for a lot of people."

His fingers tugged on his shirt, pulling it up to reveal the delicate lines of the constellation on the left side of his ribs.

"Here, too," he said cheerfully, and dropped his shirt down again, smiling at Otto.

"That actually wasn't what I wanted to wait for dark for, that's just a bonus because I wanted you to see it with me."

"It was just weird for me, so I guess I kinda avoided it." And avoid talking about it, or mentioning him. He'd at least texted him... once. But Otto was slowly coming to accept things as they were. Family included.

Otto settled in place. He'd looked at stars with Chance before. He'd even asked questions. Sure, it wasn't his passion, but hearing Chance babble about it was endearing. "What's... circle pollum mean.." Otto's brows furrowed. And what way was North, for that matter?

He looked behind him as Chance pulled up his shirt to reveal the tattoo. One he'd seen before, but didn't know it had a particular name.

He looked back through the scope to see what Chance was talking about again. "You're cute when you get all excited." He murmured casually.

The fact that Otto was putting up with his excitement over something he probably found significantly less exciting was something Chance was very appreciative of. He let out a little laugh and said, "Circumpolar means that it stays around one of the Earth's poles, hardly moving," he said with a grin. "It's above the horizon at all times."

His cheeks were slightly flushed from pleasure. Chance all but beamed at Otto.

"Not cute," he still said stubbornly, shifting to press a quick kiss to the back of Otto's neck before reaching for the backpack he'd snagged earlier. "But thank you for putting up with my selfish whims."

He dug around in the bag and pulled out a small, cylindrical container.

"I was gonna save it for the actual day, but now seemed as good a time as any," said Chance, tugging at the lid of it. "It's almost Independence Day, anyway."

He held the case, which had the word Sparklers written across it in bold, bright letters, as well as a lighter.

"It's cool that you know this s**t. The only kinda facts I know have to do with music." He smirked lightly, "Ain't really all that impressive in comparison. Your facts got big fancy words to memorize." Ah the days when he had to study and memorize complicated homework facts. He'd dropped them all the moment his sassy 16 year old self ran away from home.

Otto's eyes widened slightly when Chance pulled out the container. Sparklers. "I like it. Specially since I'd rather celebrate it away from other partyin' sorts." He missed his homeland, in many ways. This was a way to pay tribute to the years he took it for granted.

He held out a hand for a sparkler. "Let's celebrate. We'll have drinks on the actual day."

"Your music facts are just as interesting to me as space facts," said Chance with a grin. "Fancy words don't mean they're more impressive. Besides," he added teasingly. "You're hot when you play the drums and when you talk about music."

His smile widened, and Chance, instead of handing Otto a sparkler, just took his hand, pulling him to his feet to tug him a few feet away so they wouldn't catch sparks on the pillows or the telescope.

"Here," he said, extending the container, already taking one for himself. "We'll have our own private celebration, away from the crowds."

Otto fought a smile, turning his head and fixing his hair. Hot, huh?

Otto was pulled to his feet, and was soon face to face chin with Chance (okay so he tiled his head up, whatever). He took one of the sparklers, fiddling with it in hand. "Got a light?" He asked cheekily, holding the tip of the sparkler out.

Chance wasn't even trying to hide his smiles now. He just gave Otto an amused look and held up the lighter, clicking it open and holding it to the end of Otto's sparkler first.

"For you," he said grandly, and then, once Otto's was lit, Chance shifted the lighter to the end of his own. The sparklers burst into being, bright and cheerful, and Chance took a step back, sweeping his in a long drag.

"I never used to get these before," he said, the sparklers casting dramatic shadows around them. "Mother would never allow them, but we had them at the boy's home, and I always loved them."

"The only time my town ever got lively was Independence Day. Bigass BBQs, music, bonfires, fireworks like crazy. There weren't really any kids my age, so I got most of the sparklers to myself." He carried on conversationally, writing things in the air with the sparkly stick of fire. "I had to go to bed pretty early cause all the adults were drinkin' n' bein' rowdy as ********. But still.."

There had been some fun times.
