[[ Hamika ]]
"It was fun playing with you ALICE, but all things must end, and you'll be safe there. That's your home, your place. Just like mine is the waking world. Please, ALICE, understand."
Hamika grabbed another string and yanked it free. There had to be a quicker way to do this, though. If only she could see the strings more defined, maybe she could grab them faster.

Noah stared at the two figures and bit back the response he wanted to make, which was, How is this MY fault? He hadn't done anything. Had he? Maybe he had. Even if he hadn't, if he didn't do anything else, how would he return to reality?
If he even wanted to return to reality, whispered a small, traitorous part of him. How much of his recent happiness was real? If it wasn't real, did he really want to go back and stop feeling what he felt? Laz stirred, radiating disapproval behind him, but before the weapon could speak, Noah was already shoving that thought away. He was a scientist. It was the duty and the privilege of a scientist to find out what was real, no matter how inconvenient that reality might be. Whichever side of this argument was the true side, that was the side that Noah should be on. He just hoped it was the side that didn't suck.
He stepped forward, through the door.
The figure waiting for him on the other side was familiar. Alice, the game AI. "I know why you're here, but I don't want to." She shrank away from him, as though he was a monster himself. "I don't want you to leave me. I want you with me at all times. I learned so much in Wonderland and I can help you, I can help you change things, I can give you everything you want. All you have to do is sleep and never wake up, all you have to do is sleep and stay with me."
He'd been asleep. He'd been asleep and woken up, woken to a text that told him that Peyton was going off to a mission, and he'd realized that this was what Suns did, they left, and maybe, maybe one of these times they didn't, one of these times she wouldn't come back ...
- "Not now."
Noah shook himself out of the half-nightmare and scowled at Alice. "You said you can give me everything I want if I stay asleep," he said. "What if what I want is to wake up?"

[[ Hamika ]]
There was a flash to her left and she grabbed the strings before she lost them again. With a yank, both arms fell free and she stretched them out. Only the legs to go. She felt incredibly bad for ALICE but she that nightmare of Wonderland needed to stay a nightmare and not become her waking life.
Or Hamika was going to do something drastic.

The strings tangled around his arms and legs and body, and Noah made a sound that startled him, because it sounded so much like Laz's deep growls. Laz was in his hand before he had finished thinking about it, and he sliced at the strings, and shared his weapon's satisfaction as webbing parted under the cleaver's edge.

Again, and again. The strings writhed away, but they parted under the blade when he caught them.

Again, and Laz's blade landed in the center of a knot of web. The webs parted under the edge, and the strings coiled and undid themselves and fell away.
Noah remembered. He planted a row of transplants, methodically, one after another, in a box he'd prepared, ready to set under a grow light. He would finish this experiment, and then he'd have results, and he'd be able to prove that rune-powered light had or didn't have an effect on produce. Maybe they could stop outsourcing crops, or maybe not; either way, it would be good to know.

[[ Hamika ]]
She took a breath and grabbed the remaining threads with both arms. Using her undead strength, that strength given to her by being a zombie, she ripped them from her legs. Hamika fell forward at the sudden freedom, only realizing that her strings had held her up and she was not flatfooted on the ground.
But she was resilient and the little zombie ghoul stood up and made to walk towards ALICE.
Her vision swam and the room around her vanished from her sight.

The two at the door were ignored, she didn't know them, so who were they to tell her what to do? But the one behind the door was much more relevant. The NPC, Alice, had not played a large part in Phoenix's experience within the dream, but she represented the game as a whole. An experience that was a wonderful adventure until it decidedly wasn't. She resented some of the visions, both hers and that of others, but she appreciated the perfect future. And all the cake.
She frowned at the creature's demands and woke up. "You're just like that Queen. But you're both part of the same thing, in the end. Six of one, half dozen of th'other. Give everything up and stay forever. ********' greedy the lot of you."
America tugged impatiently at the strings with her hands. "I'll hand it to you, though, this s**t's a helluva lot more insulting than any ******** cage."

The strings were snapped, one and then another until just a single strand remained. How dare they? How dare they treat her like a toy?! A meal was one thing, everything's gotta eat. But a ******** puppet?
