She immediately began to think of the shield as something of a magnetic field that repulsed instead of attracted. It began at the crown of her head and flowed down around her from end to end until it was picked back up at the bottom. She was reminded of the magnetic field around a planet, or the way that a lightsaber functions; a continuous loop of energy flows from the hilt to the end of the blade and back again, only really losing energy when the loop was broken and the blade cut something. She imagined that the shield would lose power in much the same way; if its pattern was broken, energy would be removed from the circuit. She couldn't imagine having too much power behind the field at this point, but she felt certain that it was at least there.

She resolved to test her sensations; she obviously felt that there was a shield there, but she could not be sure if it was her imagination or not. She stood and --maintaining her concentration, which proved a simple matter despite her inexperience-- she moved to a droid control console some distance away from the arenas where the other younglings practiced lightsaber combat. This was a testing ground of a different sort; a host of small, spherical droids sat at the ready inside a stone chamber, waiting to be activated to come out and fire controlled blasts of blaster gas at the students, to practice their skills at deflecting blaster bolts. She activated one with a simple instruction and stood back, lightsaber on her belt, looking to all the world like she was about to let the droid...

... Shoot at her unarmed. Which she is absolutely letting happen. She wasn't just going to let it hit her, but she wasn't going to try and deflect the blaster with her lightsaber. She, to be honest, didn't much care for the weight of the lightsaber, and using it was a clumsy endeavor on her part. She felt much more at home using the force as a tool and --when needed-- a weapon. There were options for someone like her in the future, when she was allowed to be chosen for special training, but at the moment, she was only allowed to study shii-cho, and the choppy, staccato style simply didn't speak to her the way that it did to other students. She resolved to utilize the Force to protect herself since a lightsaber wasn't going to be her first choice. Now, she relied on her intuition to help her dodge the attacks. She simply turned her body to dodge the first shot, moving her shoulder back to allow the blaster bolt to slide harmlessly by her.

The second blaster bolt came a little higher and toward the center, so, keeping her feet planted, Vyntyr bent forward at the waist and rolled her hips so that her face was looking directly at the ground as the bolt traveled over her back and into the distance. So far, so good. She was handling herself pretty capably, despite her admittedly lacking physical prowess. She was more than happy with her progress. Apparently, her connection with the Force was deepening, and she was more easily able to attune herself to its guiding nudges. She closed her eyes, allowing the Force to guide her in lieu of her senses. She took a deep breath and waited to feel the next shot coming.

She was not quite so deft this time, but she still managed to avoid the shot. She sensed that it was coming for her left leg, so she threw the leg back while raising her right arm to point forward, her face still perpendicular to the earth. This motion kept her balanced, and she listened to the Force to hear where the next shot was going to be coming. So far, she had had no problems. She held her position for a moment as she waited, preparing to allow the Force to maneuver her body as it saw fit. The flow of that energy through her body guided her inexorably toward victory, no matter how one-sided this battle was.

Aware as she was of the shield that might be protecting her, Vyntyr had no idea how well it was going to protect her. She found herself wondering what it would feel like. How much it would hurt. Because these blaster bolts hurt when they hit you. It wasn't excruciating, but after a few hits you needed to take a break. She tried to clear that thought from her mind as she swung her left leg out and up as she dropped her right arm, barrel-rolling to the right to land in a crouching position some distance away from where she had been, a fresh char mark on the grass where she'd been standing just a few seconds before.

She was supporting herself on the balls of her feet and she had her right hand, fingers splayed, on the ground just in front of her, halting the force of her roll. The next blaster bolt came and she pushed swiftly off the ground with her feet and hand, spinning to her right as her body went parallel to the ground, the bolt traveling underneath her rotating body before her left foot touched the earth, catching her and helping her to bring herself back to a standing position. She was standing straight up again, and squared herself up against the droid, preparing for the next attack.

Vyntyr called for a pause in the exercise until she could refocus her energies, and closed her eyes as she drew a breath. She marveled at how the shield had protected her, despite her inexperience. She could only imagine that a stronger blaster bolt would have ripped her apart, but as this was only a training droid, it was incapable of killing her. She let out her breath and focused her energy into that ever-flowing barrier, imbuing the air around her skin with a subtle energy that would protect her from harm. She furrowed her brow slightly. It felt more potent this time. Perhaps she had a deeper understanding of the technique now. She certainly looked forward to seeing how well the technique worked, since it felt like it should work better this time. She imagined the field growing thicker.

Vyntyr centered herself as she re-accustomed herself to that peculiar feeling of isolation. She allowed the Force to fill the void around her and kept her eyes locked on the droid as she told it to continue the practice session. She waited patiently for the next attack, determined to dodge it and make up for her embarrassingly poor attempt at a dodge the last time. She had confidence in the shield now, though, and she imagined that she could focus somewhat better now that she knew that she was in no danger of actual pain. If she could already ward off blaster fire, how might she fare against something stronger? The sky was the limit when it came to the Force, she figured.

Although it did seem something of a waste. She lamented the fact that the energy that she was deflecting was lost. Given that she was encased in a feedback loop, she wondered if there might be some way to absorb the energy and redirect it, or to harness it. Possibly even just to prevent it from damaging the shield. She thought back to her training and remembered just the technique to help her. Tutaminis. It was a technique that had the fundamental idea that she was looking for. While a Force barrier might deflect incoming damage, Tutaminis could absorb it. She needed to study.

She would focus on Tutaminis another time, she thought, as she dodged another blaster bolt. She was effectively managing this portion of her day --how long it had been she did not know-- and she was happy with her progress thus far. She was doing a fair job of dodging all of these little blaster bolts, but she knew that a hard hit, or even just a larger volume of these little bolts would do her in. That itself gave her an idea. Was it better to have a single large object, or to have hundreds of little ones? There were very clearly techniques for either school of thought. She figured she'd just have to train in both and see which was more effective. But as it was, she would go on for a little bit longer in order to figure out which method would be more suited to her purposes for this moment.

One more blaster bolt whizzed harmlessly past her. She was doing an outstanding job of this, though her body was beginning to ache. Her scars were burning, and her muscles were worn through. She was growing weak; she was not accustomed to this level of physical activity, and she did not have much more time before she was completely done. She would go for one more, she decided, before she took a break and rested her weary flesh. She was not disheartened at her inability to continue, though; she was overjoyed at her progress; she had lasted much longer than she might have before, and she was doing so much better than she ordinarily ought to have. Today was going very well, she decided, and she was more than pleased with her progress in overcoming her deficiencies.

And she was spent. She flexed back to dodge another bolt and fell, hitting the ground hard. She cried "Stop!" and lay back in the grass, panting as her lungs burned. Despite the pain, she laughed. She laughed and this was startling enough that one of the instructors who'd been nearby keeping an eye on her came to check if she was alright. "No. No, I'm fine. I'm alright." She was still laughing, and she smiled as she rolled over to sit up, taking her time to let her muscles stop screaming at her before she tried to stand up. There was something about pushing herself like this that she enjoyed, and she saw no harm in allowing herself to enjoy her training. The life of a Jedi was about rigorous training and unending dedication to perfection. If you could have a little fun on the way to that, why not go ahead and do it? She pulled her legs together and sat comfortably, deciding to exercise her spirit while her body recuperated.

She took a breath into her burning lungs and made herself hold it until she was comfortable, and then released it slowly. She allowed her mind to slow from the active, constant movement of combat to the slow, inexorable journey of a mind searching for wisdom. Vyntyr's faced cleared slowly of expression as she pondered the mysteries of the universe, and how she related to them, until she could feel the Force flowing into her like a basin filling with water. She took another breath and her lungs burned a little less, as the cooling waters of the Force soothed her aches and pains.
