More hatchings! And better yet, more Impressions! Narisa felt that knot in her stomach ease even more with each egg that hatched. She'd been worried - an understatement - about the eggs. Especially with the Sands having been wet. Seeing how energetic each of the dragonets were was such a relief it was a wonder how she remained standing upright! Narisa knew Cepheith was proud of her babies.

Yet, there was still something that lingered in the back of her mind. The same thoughts she'd worried about when Cepheith had not Risen before Suunath. Those insecure thoughts kept her hand pressed firmly against the Gold's shoulder, taking comfort from feeling the warm hide beneath her hand.

You worry too much. Cepheith said quietly, light blue eyes regarding her rider for a moment before being pulled away by Moriath's words.

Thank you, my sisters, Moriath. Aerith. Your words mean a lot. She hummed pleasantly, including Suunath and the other ranking dragons. I am much relieved seeing them hatch so fine after having such wet Sand to dwell in.

Oh Faranth! The loud one had found His! Narisa couldn't help the smile at Vibrant Blue's Impression. And she greatly appreciated the words of the other dragons, which Cepheith shared with her. Still...

Cepheith just snorted at her rider. And then sent a wave of thanks and warmth towards her fellow Gold. Suunath was her friend and Cepheith highly appreciated having her support. I had a wonderful Gold to take notes from. She teased Suunath, losing more and more of her grumpiness with the distraction of her fellow dragons to speak with. And her eggs hatching and Impressing.

And that was a Brown! A breath she hadn't been aware she'd been holding eased out of her lungs and Narisa smiled. Perhaps Ceph was right. Maybe she did worry too much?

Impression?

...Bereck abruptly felt remarkably stupid. Given one of his favorite apprentices had just found her bondmate however he was less cross about that than he would usually be. Smiling faintly, and faintly ruefully, Bereck stuck the end of his cane into the sand and lent on it. "Well then, congratulations to you both. You'd better take him off and feed him."

When Becka did just that Bereck gave a small nod of approval and turned back to watch the rest of the hatching, firmly ignoring the throbbing pain in his side. It was his own sharding fault for reacting like that.

Up on her perch Berth rumbled deep in her chest and raised a wing to 'wave' back at Becka.

***********

C'tis was fond of the affection and playfulness but he drew the line at having his cheek pinched and lent back out of range with a small scowl. Before he could say anything however there was a very very loud screech from the Sands. C'tis' head snapped around, dark eyes focusing on the Sand, expecting to see blood and guts.

What he actually saw was....

Rochelle collapsed into giggles and C'tis snorted, shaking his head slightly. "Hey, at least she didn't get a gold or a silver." Despite his words he was kind of happy for the girl, in a slightly distant sort of a way. She was wet, yes, and she had slapped Rochelle but having lived through those awful couple of weeks with her and having had his face stitched up by her he was a little pleased that the skinny little thing got to be happy.

***********

And there, at last, was a brown. Kleos relaxed a little at the sight and did another mental tally of the eggs and dragons. Twelve eggs, four greens (one unbonded as yet), three blues, one unbonded brown, four eggs as yet unhatched. One of those eggs was large, brown or bronze, the others small. Another green or two was to be expected, maybe a blue, and maybe an atype. Perhaps they had all just become accustomed to clutches with large numbers of large dragons after the initial re-introduction of mystweed fed bests into the golds' diets? Sunnath had been born from a clutch of two golds, a couple of bronzes and several browns she believed so perhaps the fecundity had carried through the bloodline. That was an interesting possibility, but she didn't have the knowledge to judge whether or not her speculation might have any basis in fact. Perhaps if there was time later she would find a healer and ask their opinion.

Moriath agreed, speaking to the same dragons as before. Eggs were perhaps more resilient than they were given credit for, the ones that had been stolen from Sunnath and Hyweth and the heat of the Sands altogether had hatched perfectly well after all.

Becka frowned as she looked back at Bereck, she knew he wasn't exactly spry on his feet and his rush to try and defend her must have pained him. She wanted to go to him but the hunger that wasn't her own gnawed at her belly and she knew Phasianth had to come first, she knew Bereck would agree but that didn't stop her feeling bad about walking off without checking on him. She hoped he has something to ease his pain handy.

he said to her, crooning at her. They reached the tables and Becka grabbed a bucket of meat, she wasn't squeamish about meat like this. "Alright Phasianth my heart" she murmured

Phasianth had a few mouthfuls of meat before replying to the exuberant Kalteth and he spread his wings out and up, showing himself off again and if Dragons could grin, he would be beaming. he said, his voice flattering.

Becka's heart fluttered as she caught Berath's 'wave' and she smiled wider, feeding Phasianth "Be careful, you need to chew it really well or you're going to choke!" she cried in panic when he only half chewed a particularly large peice. "Phasianth, Berath can't hear me from here, can you tell her thank you and we'll go and see her right after we've seen Bereck after i've fed you" She asked her Blue and pointed Berath out to him. Phasianth passed along the message he said to her, making Becka blush.

Kindra was so relieved when a Brown Hatched, she knew Narisa would have been very worried if all Cepheith had clutched was Greens and Blues. Kindra was worried too, Narisa was her friend, Ceph was Suunath's friend. Despite what happened to Suunath's eggs they'd hatched well and only one Runt too. She wondered if any of the remaining unhatched eggs would be runt colors, she'd never say as much to Narisa though. She looked down from her perch near Suuanth and gave Narisa a reassuring smile, whether the woman saw it or not was another matter.

Suunath was pleased to see a Brown in Cepheith's Clutch. She may not be as devoutly Benden as Kindra was and she never really had been, she was as pleased with her Crimson Daughter as she was with her Gold daughter, as long as they were healthy she still couldn't help but pick up off Kindra's mindset too. Unlike Kindra she didn't wonder about the colors of the unhatched eggs, just that they hatched and Impressed, she'd feel bad for her fellow Gold should anything happen to any of Cepheith's babies. "The storm was unfortunate but your swift thinking kept them dry sister Cepheith" she said to the same dragons as before. "Thank you Cepheith, I did not have a storm like that to contend with though, you did wonderfully" she said to Cepheith alone.

As Kind and Keen pranced in a slightly wobbly manner before the girls and Watchful studied the boys with his tail a-twitch the Discreet egg hatched, well, discreetly. A pale hind foot pushed out of the shell and then vanished again; had that been a bronze or a brown? It was one of the two for sure, but which?

A few moments later the surface of the egg distended, and then the whole thing came quietly apart with a flare of large pale wings. As the hatchling collected himself and shook the large bits of shell off himself his hue remained painfully ambiguous to anyone with marks riding on the matter; was that a metallic sheen, or merely glistening albumin? He was big if he was a brown, small if he was a bronze but in either case he was clearly hale and hearty. He was also taking his time about methodically flicking bits of shell off himself before he so much as glanced at the candidates or spectators.

Judgement.

Sahar unconsciously tried to avoid the eyes staring holes into all of them from his place in the back of the pack. Shuffling a little on the sands, he glanced over at the young Green infront of his female candidate companions before a flicker of movement behind the two caught his wandering eye.

Standing on his tip-toes (just to be sure it was not the Queen making that subtle flicker), the lad blinked at the shimmered shadow of a Hatchling behind the group.

He was big, indeed.
But beyond that, and the careful movements he made, he could judge very little of it.

(Nash and Vail)

It seems the little green was much more interested in the girls. Naanash wished them luck and turned back to the brown. Brown and was the Discreet, there it went. He couldn't tell the color of the new hatching, only it was between brown and bronze and seemingly content to clean himself off. Certainly not blue or green and he hoped slightly that it was a bronze. They were supposed to be good luck occurring to the rumors.

Serious little dragon was boringly serious. Really, sit and stare little dragon? Vaail sighed and shifted, looking out and paused. Had that been a foot? Yup, and the largest egg hatched into a shiny? He couldn't quite tell what color the new hatching was. He could be shiny he could be brown. He was a mystery. Sort of neat. Mystery dragon.

Kaeyne saw the reason behind the Revolution. Every time he thought of the color inequality, the unfairness of riders versus non riders, of hide to hide, it brought a distasteful tinge to his mouth and stuck in his throat. They had a point, those Wherholders. Even the blood made sense, if you thought about it, save for the innocents. He just happened to be doing the wrong thing at the wrong time, with little understanding of the issues. Never the less... they had their reasons. Ildresaak merely pointed them out.

"They're like that because of the bigots," Kaeyne continued his staring at the brown, more irritated than encouraging it - him - to Impress to any of his wonderful heterosexual fellow Candidates. Arms crossed over his chest, tighter than before, and from the very side of his gaze, he saw another shift by the eggs. "But it's life. This is probably the bitter sneering of someone that can't Impress a ranking dragon, take it with a grain of salt. Any preferences on color?" If he weren't completely turned off dragons, that was. "Something else hatched, didn't it."

With the latest egg hatching, it gave S'kiro a memory of when Neptanth called to him. His egg was so big, and now this one. He couldn't tell if it was brown or bronze. With a shrug, he wasn't too worried, and he was proud of the clutch, even if it was just as a spectator.
PostPosted: Mon Apr 29, 2013 12:04 pm

And Kaeyne was speaking in harsh, low tones, and Ildresaak wondered if his father had had a point, in siding with the revolutionaries. There were...there were reasons, he realized idly. There were things that made it the case. And then Kaeyne said something that made Ildresaak flinch and glance over at him - and he rubbed the back of his neck suddenly. Being unable to Impress...Faranth, that was what it was, wasn't it? It limited people based on their very being, on something they couldn't control.

"I don't have much choice, either," he confessed quietly. Ildresaak had no illusions as to his own preferences, nor to the fact that as far as he and Kaeyne knew, the world was limited for anyone who didn't fancy women. He watched the Discreet egg with an expression of quiet confusion, frowning as he finally processed the fact that brown or bronze, it didn't matter. What color dragon a person rode could tell you more about them than should be possible - and yet not at all. "I don't...I don't know about color. I don't know if it matters," he said quietly, looking from Watchful to Discreet to Kind and Keen.

He wondered briefly, idly, if any of the eggs in this clutch would hatch an atypical color, one of the mutants. He didn't know how someone told, unless the eggs simply didn't hatch. Those didn't choose the way browns and bronzes did. He wondered idly what kind of tension there must be for those boys who did fancy women, and women only. To know that the whole of Pern was spread out for you, to be able to wonder if each dragon you saw was possibly yours, rather than to immediately be able to rule out half of those who hatched.

The tension must have been exhausting. "I think I'd rather have a green than a blue," he said suddenly, looking over to the feeding tables where Corloss and his blue were standing. Stupid, spur-of-the-moment thinking, but somehow, the greens he had seen today seemed...more like the kind of dragon he'd want to have. The blues had been loud, or serious, or nasty. The greens hadn't.

The little green's prancing was getting gradually more competent, but she still gave the impression of being made up mainly of gangly limbs and knobbly joints. Careless of the fact that she might look a little silly the pretty dark little thing danced a few more circuits around the girls, occasionally gamboling forward to give a gentle nuzzle here and there

Abruptly however she skidded to a halt and froze: legs splayed wide, wings flared out, and head raised high it seemed that she had sensed something. Giving a high trill of pure joy she whisked around and galloped towards the male candidates.

Turning away from the Green had been a bad idea in the end.

Smiling to himself, his ears perked up at the sounds of whispering coming from where....what was his name? Ildressak? Yeah, that was it! Curious and nosy, Sahar made a move to "discreetly" shuffle closer to the two talking so he could listen in without being too much of a busybody-

Only to shuffle away when the Green from before came over.

How had she moved so fast? Sahar blinked, astonished, at the young creature as he moved to avoid getting run over.

Kaeyne didn't bat a lash at Ildresaak's admitting he liked men. He kept his cross-armed stance and that pointed chin tilted up slightly to look down his nose at the dragon. It didn't matter if the brown looked at him or not - and he knew it to be not, thank you - if the little cretin wanted to stare at the boys, they ought to stare back. Eye for an eye. Bite for a bite.

Stare for a stare.

"Yeah, I know," he said. The right corner of his mouth pulled up for the briefest of a second in a flicker of a quasi smile, only to immediately fade back to the line it had been while he stared at the twitchy-tailed brown. So the next egg hatched into something him nor Ildresaak could Impress - a brown, then, or a bronze. Maybe a surprise gold. Did it matter? They couldn't be more than Thread fodder in the eyes of the Weyr unless they had themselves a silver or maybe a crimson - even then the Benden traditionalists would have their own little snit fits.

Suddenly, Kind and Keen bolted towards them. Kaeyne jumped like any normal man would when a dark flash of green with a racing stripe frolicked over, his eyes narrowed. She went to Ildresaak - I'esaak? I'lder? - and only then did he break his stare to the brown, turning to look the green and her new rider over.

"Wish granted." He paused, as if he were looking for the appropriate thing to say, if anything. The wide man shrugged and offered out another almost-smile. It seemed the best thing to do and on days like this, it didn't pay to be nasty. Not like last time. "Congratulations, rider."
PostPosted: Mon Apr 29, 2013 12:35 pm

Kind and Keen's change of direction caught Ildresaak's attention quickly, and he looked up as the green moved in a gallop in the boys' direction. The egg that had been his favorite, the sweet little thing that had been dancing in front of the girls - and she was coming this way? She was moving quickly, skidding to a stop in front of the boys.

Ildresaak, there you are! I am Ellibreth, and I'd rather have you than anyone!

And she surged forward, straight toward Ildresaak, hitting him but not hard enough to knock him over, just the delighted excitement of hatchling finding Hers. And then Ildresaak was on his knees, with his arms wrapped around a gangly hatchling green, pressing his cheek to her shoulder while she crooned and clambered half-into his lap, spreading sand and sticky, half-dried albumen all over his robes and face and hair.

"You - Faranth, Ellibreth!" He laughed, grinning, giddy, unable to contain his own delight at the beautiful green in his lap. "You're beautiful" he said quietly.

You were being ridiculous, brooding over here, she answered, nibbling at his hair and then looking over his shoulder at Kaeyne. I don't know if His is out here somewhere or not, but he should be happier, she remarked. And then, without really thinking, she snorted and trilled at Kaeyne. Cheer up! she called brightly. Or you'll scare them all off. It was cheeky, and she knew it was cheeky, and Ildresaak - I'saak? I'dre? Faranth, who knew! - scooped her up and stood up abruptly, blushing over the dragonet's wings at Kaeyne.

"Sorry!" he said. "Sorry - she's - thanks." He trailed off, shrugged awkwardly, but he couldn't stop smiling. "See you on the other side," he said quietly, hopefully. "Thanks for standing with me."

And then he was off, moving quickly, still carrying Ellibreth - his Ellibreth! - as he all but ran to catch up with Corloss.

Apparently now clean to his satisfaction the Discreet ambiguous dragon set off towards the boys with slow solid steps. Part way there he turned his head to regard the girls and slowed thoughtfully but then turned his attention back onto the males and plodded onward.

Watchful meanwhile got back to his feet and began to prowl amongst the boys, head low and tail twitching. He didn't look like he was planning to attack anyone but he was most certainly a dragon on a mission, on the hunt for one who was worthy.

And then at long last the Easily Agitated egg that had been wriggling on and off since the start burst open in a flurry of shell shards to reveal a striking patched green. After that initial violent burst of activity however all became calm. Stretching out languidly and carefully pawing a piece of shell off her face she looked around at the world she had been thrust into so abruptly with calm blue eyes. Humming softly she started immediately towards the candidates, her steps neat and unhurried but purposeful.

By this point it was becoming notable that the Glowing egg and the Temperate egg hadn't so much as twitched as yet. The candidates would recall a steady life force from within each; were these atypical dragons, or had something gone wrong with them since the Touching due to the damp condition of the Sands? Perhaps only time and the blow of Narisa's shovel would determine that.
