Shari stood and watched as the trackers searched for the scent trail. She was not the greatest scent tracker so she stood back and let the masters of the trade do their work. She wasn't surprised when they quickly found the scent of course that was why they were the masters. She followed after the rest of the group as they followed the trail.

She had to work hard to keep her footing on the slick and sloping terrain. She was used to wooded areas and hills but not slick ground. She had to use her claws to keep herself from sliding a lot and it made her paws feel rather dirty. After a moment she couldn't stand the feeling and she tried to lick her paws.

As she brought her paw to her face she realized it was covered in a red substance and took a quick breath in surprise. "What the heck is this stuff?!" She stated as she looked over at the blonde lioness who had just stated it wasn't blood.

The commotion about a scent had Tahir’s ears perked. He lifted his nose to the air and scented. Indeed, there was something odd about. How unfortunate that he had not been the one to discover it. At least it was another canine. He trusted their noses far more than those of lions. Not that he would voice this. He needed his companions. Even his little jackal friend had caught scent of something. What a keen fellow. Tahir offered Haki a kind, but toothy, smile for his findings.

Tahir did not want to be near the front, or caught up in the rear where he would be easy pickings for the murderer, so he hurried along as the group moved. The pace was slow for his long legs, but for once he kept his trivial complaints to himself. When the ground became slick he winced, growing low under his breath. His claws were terribly overgrown, giving him poor traction and forcing him to place his paws down at an awkward angle. Slick stone did nothing to help his balance. He was forced to slow and keep his eyes low, squinting through the fog for good places to put his feet.

With his focus on his paws, he noticed the appearance of the red substance almost immediately. He halted, rearing his head back and sneering. Not blood, no, it smelled wrong for that. But then what…? Tahir lifted a paw and gave it one good lick. Ugh, sour.

Perhaps not the best idea. He had no idea what this substance was, or what it could do if ingested.

Sandor slipped a little on his way into the moister land, but soon enough his paws found their way onto an acerbic, tacky substance that he would have guessed was blood, except it wasn't. Well, that was going to be nasty to wash off later.

"So if it's not blood, what is it?" he rasped. He would be surprised and impressed if anyone knew.

He sniffed tentatively. It lacked the metallic taste-scent that blood had and instead seemed more like some kind of plant gone bad, maybe. So...a strange red detritus.

"Anyone who walked through this will probably leave interesting pawprints," he muttered.

Mura followed the group, not wanting to be left behind. As they traveled down the path she could smell the acid smell. "What is that?" She asked out loud hoping she wasn't the only one who smelt it. The smell irritated her nose. "I don't like this area." She didn't mean to complain, she just felt uncomfortable.

It was becoming difficult to walk, she noticed. Her paws kept slipping and there were moments when she thought she was going to fall. When she finally noticed the red substance. She was relieved that it wasn't blood, however she still did not want it on her paws. "I do hope there is a creek near by so I can watch my paws off. This stuff is making it difficult to walk properly."

Margulis found herself drawn to the substance, fishing a paw forward and back within it. It felt almost like contaminated water, too fluid to have been comprised of blood. Sour, but earthy at the same time. She found it hard to place such a substance, it was unlike most things she had seen before. Inorganic, or at least unnatural. Perhaps even toxic. At that thought she withdrew her paw, rolling the facts over in her head.

A few ideas came to mind, perhaps the others would have similar thoughts. "Mineral contamination in the water maybe? It could be driving a normal beast to madness. Such things are found near hot springs and deep rents in the earth," she offered, "Something could be leeching into the soil here." It wasn't certain, she knew little about the individual minerals the earth had to bear, but she'd been told tales of things like this before.

Ndege nodded her thanks to Margulis, gaining heart from the other's kind words. She headed down the slope, watching where she placed each foot and trying not to gag on the smell. It was strange how the ground was red - but it wasn't blood, old or new. She lifted a paw and shook it, trying to get rid of the sticky substance. Nasty, horrid, rotten! But what on earth could it be?

Bluu hissed as her feet slipped on the wet ground before darting back up the slope. Surely they weren't all going to go down there? She waited a moment, watching the other animals go down, before making up her mind and starting a slow, careful descent. "This is not a good place," she muttered, hackles raised. It wasn't the blood like substance that was getting to her though - it was how difficult it would be to run away if things went bad.

He, being considerabley shorter than everyone, found the pace he was travelling at a little more than a jogging speed. Although he was accustom to such conditions, travelling at lengthy distances at a fast speed. That being said, Haki wasn't anywhere close to being out of breath. In fact he was more filled with energy than ever, after all, this contest-- no, adventure that everyone was on at the moment was even more exiciting! That and he was trying to trick himself into forgetting that they were actually monster-hunting and not just exploring for the sake of exploring.

When his tiny paws pressed against the wet surface he was now standing on, Haki slipped and headbutted the person in front of him. Lucky for him-- or maybe not so luckly that person happened to Tahir. "Oops." He muttered.

Lani wasn’t particularly calmed by Ndege’s words, but she had no choice now but to press on and stay close. The group was moving, and to head back would mean to be alone. Lani didn’t want to be so deep in the wood all by her lonesome. Not here. Not with the shadows and skulls and monsters about. She kept close behind Ndege, not quite touching but staying no more than a few inches from contact.

The sour smell of something abnormal invaded her nostrils and she grimaced as her feet squelched into the unnatural red substance,” What isthis?” Not blood, clearly, but why so much of it? She’d never seen such a thing before in her life.

She flicked an ear in Marguilis’ direction and shrank back, shivering,” I wouldn’t like to be around mad people.” It seemed the green lioness was also going to stay close. Not Lani’s favorite choice of companions, but she refused to leave Ndege. At least this lion was big and strong. And probably slower than Lani, too. She hoped. Never-the-less, she offered the stranger a quick nod in greeting.

An glanced behind her. The fog still clung to the rocks, but from what little she could see, Sandor was right. They'd left more than their fair share of tracks in the bright red substance. She gave her paw another sniff, as if to confirm it was not blood, before setting it back down. What a bizarre thing.

"Perhaps a trap then," Veru mused. He hadn't been following down the path with the red substance, but rather brazenly stepped through it now. The red substance was brilliant against his otherwise white fur. "Smear this...paint, or mud on the ground, and whatever you are tracking becomes very easy to follow."

An fought the compulsion to sit. "I don't think it flowed here. Someone had to have smeared it- that's a lot of work to go through for tracking something."

"Maybe the beast doesn't smell very well," Veru mused. A rather wicked smile crossed his face, and his eyes searched for Seide. As soon as he caught her eye, he stretched out his paw as though threatening to touch her with the painted goo.

...and that was when karma struck.

Suddenly there was a loud crash from the trees, as a monkey dropped down from the canopy. Despite all the animals surrounding him, he had a target. He ran straight up to Veru, and slapped him across the face. A red handprint remained, smeared right down the center. The white lion was so surprised, he didn't even think to retaliate.

arrow But the creature didn't stop with just defacing Veru! Things are about to get very red!

Roll a dice, 1-20. The first person to roll 17 or above restrains the monkey! Everyone else gets a nice red handslap. Enjoy.

Ndege was about to answer Lani when the monkey came down and slapped Veru across the face. Even if she didn't show it, Ndege had been as tense as a loaded spring since her first step in the forest. She'd been waiting for something like this. Snarling like a mad beast, she turned and leaped at the horrible little monkey, ready to tear the little thing from limb, but forgot how slippery the ground was, slipped, and was rewarded with a slap across the rump as she hit the ground face first.

For her part, Bluu wanted nothing to do with the monkey, but that didn't mean the monkey wanted nothing to do with her. Rather than risk breaking a leg while trying to run from the tiny beast, she closed her eyes as the monkey slapped her across the face. Why that stupid little - !

Sandor's paws itched with the substance. Someone else had made the connection that it would be a good means of tracking a person, too. He wasn't sure if that was a good thing. It meant that there was at least one other person in this hunt who was as competent as he was, and therefore as likely to claim the reward at the end.

Or maybe the itchy paws hadn't been the red stuff. They might have been advance but useless warning of a surprise to come. Sandor snarled at the sudden appearance of a monkey and even after his lips mostly covered his teeth once more, a rumbling growl emanated from his chest. He hated monkeys. They were creepy, with their long toes. Not to mention they had a tendency to smear s**t everywhere.

Which is what he thought had happened to the white lion at first. It was amusing enough that he stopped growling to chuckle. Of course it wasn't actually excrement, but this red stuff. Even so. Sandor enjoyed seeing the take-charge lion marked with the gunk.

Not growling was a bad idea, as it evidently made him less fearsome to the monkeys, for soon another one came up and slapped him across the haunches, leaving a red mark before he could turn and bite at it. His teeth closed on air, but the growl was definitely back.

Tahir was still smacking the last remnants of sour-red whatever from his lips when Haki slammed into his legs once again. He let out a gruff yelp and shot forward through the slime, hindlegs buckling. Down he went, getting streaks of the stuff all over his coat and face. Tahir snarled and whipped his head around to Haki,” Watch yourself, jackal. That’s twice now.”

He had just barely pushed himself back to his feet, dripping red, when a blasted monkey appeared out of nowhere, screeching and hollering up a storm.

“I knew it! Babo-” he managed, right before he felt he sharp sting of a slap across his face. He reeled back in surprise, gaping.

Amali was slow to react to the sticky, sour substance they were walking through. For some reason, it made him want to gag and the very idea of it made him very self-conscious. He was from the swamps, unusual and sometimes distasteful smells were not uncommon- and he didn't think gagging so early on in this would make him look very strong and capable. However, when the monkey dropped and began attacking the group, he reacted very quickly. He weaved his way around just a couple bodies and he caught up to where the monkey was fending off attempts to subdue him. As soon as his path was cleared, he shifted his weight and pounced-- and miraculously, he landed right on target!

"Whoa!" he said, now shifting all his weight into keeping the creature down.

Shari was caught off guard as she was slapped in the face by a crazy monkey. She cringed as the smell of the red stuff was now on her face extremely close to her nose. "Oh nasty!" She snarled then she watched as Amali managed to pin the monkey down. "Ha! That's what you get!"

Before Margulis could properly react to a harsh slap across her face it seemed another had caught the intruding primate. A good thing too, she thought as her forelegs shook, she'd have no luck holding down such a wiggly beast on her own. The mark stung, but not so much as the odor of the red substance now so near to her nose.

With the beast restrained she turned to the group, struggling to catch her breath. She hated to admit fear, but in the case it was warranted. There was rarely one monkey alone in an area. And it had come from above. As slyly as she could she lifted her head up toward the canopy, scanning it as best she could for movement. "If it's a trap," she began, "Then we've already stumbled straight into it. Perhaps it will draw the beast to us. Better to know you're being followed then to not know, right? We might be able to retake the upper hand."
