With the ingredients ground up, Mei moved to the task of adding the charcoal. Without any prior knowledge on how much charcoal she was supposed to add to it; Mei added very little to it. It was the wrong choice--she would learn that the hard way when the incense would practically burn up in seconds when it came time to putting it to the test. But for now, she would carry on with a positive attitude.

Okay, two out of five of the tasks were done. So far things were going fairly well--as far as she knew--and it was even kind of fun. Grabbing the gum of arabic, Mei started to apply it to the incense, in hopes that it would be enough to hold together. Last thing she wanted was for it to fall apart, and have to go back and fix that up again. Thankfully, it seemed to be holding fairly well. Enough so, that she could continue on with her work.

Glancing about the classroom, she had noticed that some of the students were already finished their work, while others--like herself--were slower with the process. Not that it bothered her to be slow. She was actually enjoying her time working on this little project.

Now, she was to apply the incense? Seemed simple enough. With having applied the right amount of gum of arabic, Mei had no problem getting the incense to stick. Looking it over a moment longer, just to be sure; the doll nodded to herself and continued to work.

With her work almost done, Mei became a little too eager towards the end. She was almost done, and though it had been a fun project to work on, she wanted to move on. So, instead of letting sit longer, as she should have, she didn't. It would most likely cost her--a lot--when it came down to the grading on their work.

Chuppi was ready, listening, by the time Invictus decided to describe what everyone needed to do for their lesson. they were going to make incense of their own, something she found a good idea. As a monster, more specifically as one who was somewhat dog and lizard, her sense of smell was important to her so making things that smelled nicely would suit her well.

She looked at the batches laid before her and finally went with Batch One. She liked the way everything in it smelled and, with so many items, if she messed up on one she wouldn't need to worry right? Well that was wrong, usually have more items made things harder, but she watched, listened, and started to grind things down.

The process was slow, steady, but in the end she got it done correctly and it looked as though she did a somewhat decent job? At the very least it didn't look horrible.

Chuppi wasn't. . . very good at this, not really at all. She'd managed to smash everything together just fine but she couldn't adhere things and the charcoal amount seemed really off. For starters, the charcoal was burning a little too quickly, or maybe she just didn't put in the right amount and maybe it would work out well in the end.

Biting her lip she moved on to the third step of it all, bonding agent. With too much charcoal she figured she might need to use less agent, but in the end it looked as though she used too little of it. Her cheeks flushed red and she looked around, hoping no one else was really paying attention to her faults at working.

It was now or never, she needed to stick things together and see how it went from there. The end result of her work, the chance to maybe make something nice and worthwhile. A few people around her seemed to be having trouble and she bit her lip again, worried, though the moment she tried it - well! Everything was just fine. The Chupacabra let out a sigh of relief and pressed her hands together, ignoring the fact she now had glued two of her fingers to one another.

Her fingers now immobile she had no choice but to wait for everything to set, all the while trying to pull her hands apart. At least this was something to do and she wouldn't be tempted to try and move it right away.

She was done, was it over? The little monster was fretting showing her work to the Heir (or to anyone else for that matter) but it needed to be shown and she needed to feel a sense of pride?

Or maybe she just wanted to wash her hands and have her nose stop itching!

The next day of class, Invictus had the group gather in the same room once again. However, the room had been rearranged so that there were several paper walls set up, each setting up a space with a mat inside. However, Invictus was still seated where he'd been the day previous.

This time, however, there was a candle. Fire today? It certainly seemed like the incense made the day before would indeed be put to use. Which meant if someone had lost it since the last class or simply kept having.. problems with the incense holding up from their own craftsmanship, well...

They'd find out.

Still, once everybody was seated, he took up one of the punks from the kit he had supplied each student with the day before and used the candle to light it, smoldering out the flame that followed before he set the stick of incense he had created upon the stand carefully.

"We are now ready to proceed. Take your incense and set it up as I have." he held up the stand he had carefully, before he set it back down. "I will be leaving this candle out so you may all light one of these," he held up the punk, "with which you will be able to light your incense from." he explained, carefully taking the punk he'd just smoldered out and blowing on the end of it, causing it to turn a bright orange, filled with heat.

Using that, he carefully ignited the end of the stick of incense, which lit with a similar orange glow, bright and living, burning slowly, yet producing a lovely sort of muted scent - not quite forest-y, but it was distinctly plant-esque. Earthy.

It could have been described as very calming, even.

"As you can see, I have set it up so that each of you can be seated away from your classmates so that your scents do not overlap." he said simply, motioning to the set up he'd put together. There were enough spaces for each student to sit by themselves. "But be sure to light your punks," hurr, "before you do so." Invictus suggested calmly.

"Try to not inhale the smoke, just the scent. As you do so, try to visualize what you would like to gain - luck, success, money...... Visualization is important."

It was an easy enough - and almost predictable next step... maybe this class wouldn't be so bad!

"Please do not set anything on fire." he added after a moment.

Proceeding with Classwork

Roll 1d10

If your rolls for the first portion of the class were generally good (within the 3 max 'positive' range of roll 3/5 times (between 8-10, depending, the more times you had to roll for the Gum of Arabic the worse you did. If it took you 2 tries or less, that is good), you do not need to roll. Your incense holds up just fine! However, if you want to roll, you may still do so!

Otherwise, match your roll to the following:

Dice Rolls
1, 10 - Disaster strikes! Something went wrong! Horribly wrong. Lit the paper walls on fire wrong.
Even (2, 4, 6, 8 ) - Things seem to be OK.
3 - Your incense attempts to crumble! EEK! It holds up, though.
5 - Your incense seems to burn either far too quickly or takes forever! (depending on your charcoal powder roll for IC accuracy)
7 - You inhaled too much of the smoke and break into a fit of nasty coughing.

Cough.

Coughcough.

Hack.
9 - Hey! That turned out much better than expected! SCORE! Your incense burns perfectly!

Once you've matched your roll, please RP your student actually taking the time to visualize as Invictus has asked and write about what they think of as they take in their scent....or possibly set things on fire to make Invictus very unhappy. Yikes!

There were paper screens now set up in the "classroom". Paper screens.

That was the first thought that crossed Faussi's mind as he arrived to class. Then he noticed the candle. So they were lighting things today?? ... He moved over, picking a spot among the divided "rooms". However, unlike yesterday, the demon did not take his place on the mat, but set about unpacking his incense materials across it, seating himself in the opening so that his back was to the room. A good thing, as his flaming wings could easily catch the entire room on fire. With that taken care of, he retrieved one of the unused pucks from its container, not bothering to make his way to the candle. He instead clamped his thumb and forefinger firmly around it's end, allowing his naturally warm body heat to burn through it, causing the tip to smolder, before lighting it quickly in the flame from his wings for good measure. A warm puff of breath blew it out again, and Faussi brought the puck's tip down til it touched his incense. It crackled momentarily before catching light, burning rather evenly with a soft ember-like glow.

Closing his eyes, the demon leaned forward, sniffing the scented air before him as instructed. He tried to focus his mind on one thought, the thought of what he wanted to carry away from this most. The spicy sweet aroma however, kept distracting him towards thoughts of candy and sweets, but one thought remained firmly in his mind.

I want to be able to harness the FEAR from Halloween, in an effiecent manner. I want Halloween to to use our FEAR to sustain us, without the need to war with other worlds.

He guessed, at heart, he was a bit of a peaceful demon. He certainly loved a good scandal, and making mischief when he could, and above all realized FEAR was his very life-force, and without giving others a good scare not only his existence, but Halloween itself could crumble ... but somewhere deep down, Faustus knew there was a line drawn. Just as surely as the doors that separated Halloween from other worlds. ... He felt that maybe he had begun to understand it ... what Conquest was.

Conquest was Order. A perfect balance of give and take. The living realization of the same dream he had held since childhood.

Light flickered beyond his closed lids, a familiar warmth, and suddenly startled, Faustus looked up.

It seemed several student's paper screens had caught fire, and were now burning. His name kept being called, and the demon realized with a start who's voice it was. Several spaces down, Amarus was quivering frantically in front of an orange blaze.

Oh Mother of Jack!! he exclaimed inwardly, eyes wide as he rushed over.

"Amarus!!" he called to her. "What in the holy name of Jack is going on in here!!??"

Reaching out, he grabbed the ghoul by the shoulders, pulling her safely away from the fire. He glanced around for their instructor, cursing himself inwardly. If their natural abilities weren't so surpressed in the Clan's lands, he could simply stop the blaze himself. It wasn't terribly large, but if it kept burning ...

{{OOC: On second thought, I've reworked it. So there's no confusion, and his classwork should be done ^^}}

The fire brought a new touch to the room as the candle seemed to flicker gently as the class began to fill in again. The ghoul found herself entranced by the shadows they cast while she shuffled in as quickly as possible, eager to see the day through. Mea had been overly protective over her incense since the day before, so much so she had slept with it nearby to make sure it's scent didn't stray too far from her detection. Once she got attached to an object though, it was hers, it belonged to her and she was determined to keep it safe.

In which she was lucky she had.

Bouncing her way back to her mat she moved down against it, delicately unwrapping her stick of incense. Intensely she watched over Invictus as he modeled off his stand, trying to draw her attention away from the small flame burning near him. One step at a time. She thought with a half-grin, placing the stand back down. Drawing out a punk she took near the candle, lighting it delicately. There was a brief moment where she stopped to get a better look at the heir of Conquest. Something in his eyes was both calming and underlying with something far greater. Mea shrugged it off, bouncing back to her mat. Other matters needed her attention now.

Vibrating, her ears perked up curiously as she lit the tip of her incense. Closing her eyes she began to float out from the classroom internally, taking a strong whiff of her incense. What did the Mouryou wish to gain? There was the obvious first echo of food that came back from a loud voice. Nah, that wasn't it - she loved it, wanted it, sure - but not even with an insatiable lust for food was that all to her.

The cinnamon mixed gently with the berries while the other scents began to blur into something all too familiar. It smelled of cooking, a comfort well known to her but not this particular mix. Warmth and excitement filled her and she felt her tail twitch side to side behind her. Nostalgia came to her as she remembered leaving home for the first time as a tiny ghoul and seeing the vast world.

Knowledge of other things through travel? The words echoed back and she felt a smile come across her face, surely that was something to gain. Observing new worlds, tasting their foods - just as she was doing now but she wanted more, like a greedy child she wanted to learn and there was another thing, what was it, nearly at the front of her mind -

The scent was immediately gone and she opened an eye curiously. Quizzically she stared down at her incense which had nothing but a lightly fuming stump left in it. Alarmed she opened both eyes and bend over it, poking it with her hands. Mea frowned and she grumbled under her breath, letting out a loud exasperated grunt. Just as she was beginning to break through into the vast areas of her uncharted mind!

"Ugh!" She exclaimed and leaned back with a sigh. If only she had added more charcoal.

The thought was gone and she could only give herself a smile. Well if that's done, I wonder what's for lunch. At least she always had that to come back to.

The room was slightly different. As Dev walked in, she glanced at the paper walls set up around the area before she took a seat. The presence of the candle piqued her interest. Were they going to light the incense they had made yesterday? Her tail curled around her legs. She sincerely hoped they would. Although the ghoul was not entirely confident in the incense she had crafted, she also wanted to see how well she had performed on yesterday’s assignment. She revealed a toothy grin when her guess was revealed—they were going to light them! Eagerly, Dev took out her incense, holding the stick between two fingers.

Dev turned toward Bon, Fallow, and Mea. “Hope ye incense works guid,” she told them before lighting her own and shuffling into one of the empty spaces. So far nothing bad had happened, this was fortunate. She held the incense with both hands, drawing it away from her to avoid inhaling the smoke. Dev took a few test sniffs and when she didn’t cough, she smiled and let her eyes droop closed. What to visualize? Luck? Success?

Knowledge. The answer came to her almost instantly. Her smile stretched a bit wider. In her mind, Dev envisioned herself in a library, filled with books. In the background she could hear muffled voices, students. She was at school.

Once he'd lit the incense stick, Fallow settled back uneasily into the one of the empty mats, surrounded on both sides by thin paper veils and concealed from his herd. It wasn't exactly to his liking, this small and crowded space. His tail flicked uneasily, and the Púca very nearly caught the tips of it on his now burning incense, sending a plume of exotic scents into the air and very nearly wrenching himself to the side and falling over in the process.

Rumbling in dissatisfaction, Fallow closed his eyes and tried to inhale the scent, and not the growing wall of smoke somewhere to his left. Is that a fire that someone is star -- WAITNOSTOP, incensesmellsmellthink -- There was rather a calamity and clutter of thoughts in his head, drowning out the focus that he'd been so eagerly holding onto for the past few days.

"Stop, think, concentrate,"
He rumbled to himself, and inhaled deeply.

Though nothing grand, the scent was certainly... ah, exotic. Spices and citron came together in a blend that nearly made his nose itch and his ears curl back in bafflement and confusion; he wasn't sure he liked it, and he wasn't sure that it was anything he would want to stick so close to his nose again any time soon, even if the horsemen's other scents around the Conquest Isles seemed to dazzle him every time he walked by. Ruffling his tail a bit and ignoring the scent of smoke, Fallow squeezed his eyes shut and thought about - what was it again? - what he would like to gain?

Concentration. Patiencepatiencepatience.

And just as he thought he might gain some of that, someone yelled, and something started to smell like burning paper.

Ears jerking upwards in bafflement and irritation, the Púca opened his eyes and wrenched himself forward to stare beyond the walls of his enclosure for the source of his ire.

"Will you please stop setting things on fire?"
He asked, "it is making it wretchedly difficult to concentrate with you all trying to burn this place to the ground!"

And as an afterthought, to the loud voice from somewhere around him,

"if setting fire is something very interesting to you, then you have lived a dreadful sheltered life."

After a good night's sleep, Xiu was not quite as jumpy and eager as she had been the day previous--which was, all things considered, a good thing. In hindsight, as she gazed down at her incense stick, she should have been more careful and precise with her work the previous class, but...

Well, it was too late for that now. No matter--there was no reason to dwell on what couldn't be changed, after all.

Her brows were furrowed in concentration as she watched Invictus go through each of the steps, taking in the instructions carefully. It didn't seem to be too difficult of a task, so she was hopeful that her attempt to light her incense would go smoothly.

And sure enough, everything was going smoothly so far. The baku's movements were careful as she brought the punk to the open flame, and then--just like they had been shown--blew the flame out and touched the glowing tip to her incense. It didn't take very long for her incense stick to take on a similar glow, wisps of smoke drifting and swirling above her. My, this room is going to full of smoke by the end of this. She mused, before shaking her head. Right, now to find out how the incense smelled.

She leaned in, carefully trying to waft some of the scent--and not the smoke--her way with her hand. Unfortunately, when she heard a yell and saw the blaze of a flame from the corner of her eye, the baku jumped in alarm and ending up sucking in a mouthful of smoke.

Needless to say, she was not pleased when she suddenly began to have a coughing fit, her eyes watering as she curled in on herself and coughed. And coughed. And coughed some more.

Uuuuugh.
