Caitlyn looked from the bullet riddled crone to the people arguing and back again. Her eyes grew as wide as saucers as the monster’s chest exploded into a mass of teeth and tongue. Caitlyn tightened her finger on the trigger of her gun and raised the weapon to fire once more at the creature, when suddenly the creature was just gone.

They’d won? Well, that wasn’t so bad.

The shrieks derailed that train of thought. Caitlyn swivelled her head around, taking in the army of creatures descending upon them. This was what they considered a training mission?

Someone suggested hitting the closest of the monsters. Well, that was as good a target as any. Caitlyn raised her gun and squeezed the trigger.

BANG!

And that was a miss. There were so many of them and Caitlyn was having trouble focusing. Where was her knife when she needed it?

She gulped and watched the tide draw closer.

It was almost a relief when the hunched shape shambling towards them showed its true nature. It was obviously a monster now, nothing ambiguous about the lolling head and the gaping, bloodied maw where its chest should have been. Jordan took a visceral satisfaction in its death, even though he hadn't been the one to fire the shot that finished it off.

Around them, the structures trembled and spat forth new monsters. ... Nothing like sudden, mortal danger to get your mind off other worries. "Stay calm," he whispered to himself, then louder, "Don't panic. They can be killed. Take a deep breath and aim."

Reload, grip, fire - he muttered a curse under his breath as the shot went wild.

Try that again. Take your own advice, idiot, deep breath and aim. He took an extra moment to line up. The effort paid off - this time he saw his shot hit, though it caused the creature he was firing at only a brief stumble.

Don't get too excited till it's over, he advised himself. They were still surrounded, and his success was minor in context.

"Don't panic. They can be killed. Take a deep breath and aim."

Caitlyn heard someone speak. They were right. They killed the old woman-thing, they could kill these monsters! In theory, at least.

Drawing in a shuddering breath, Caitlyn swung the muzzle of her gun towards the crowd and fired.

BANG!

Another miss.

“God damn it.”

The gun lowered to Hanna's side, barrel still warm. She gripped the handle, waiting for the two on either side of her to take their aim. "Good shot, damn," Hanna said, first to Scarlett and then to Scott. They felt like a trio of sharpshooters, even if Hanna hadn't exactly performed as well as she hoped.

Conversations darted all around the field, even as the strange creature shuddered with bullets. It was hard to keep up with the all of it. Davey was giving Before s**t, and Hanna approved, even if she didn't chime in. She was a fan of being critical and sarcastic. The flailing and wailing just begged for sassy quips, just as soon as she came up with one. Robert and Petra were still caught up in their own world. The one that they kept calling Boss was sticking with her recruits too. Everyone had, it seemed, more or less kept to the same clumps they had formed during orientation. Even Hanna herself had done it with Scott and Scarlett. Was this how it would be?

Hanna didn't have long to think on it. The thing crumbled grotesquely, and in spite of herself, Hanna's nose wrinkled, bile rising in her throat. She was not some battle hardened warrior. She was a nineteen-year-old whose most gruesome personal experience prior to this was seeing a drunk girl get hit by a car as she darted across the street. It was nothing like watching a head fall off a body that seemed to be coming to pieces all over the place. And the teeth thing? It was revolting.

Hanna took a step back and involuntarily gripped Scarlett's arm, eyes going wide. "s**t, it's all around us," she said loudly, raising her gun to the sky and turning in a half-circle. When the enemy was all around, Hanna had no idea where she was supposed to point.

Dropping to one knee, Hanna leveled her weapon at the creeping thing that seemed to be, she thought, giving her the evil eye and took the shot. A hit! The joy was short lived as even more opponents crept into view.

Still on her knees, Hanna decided to just... stay there. There were a lot of people with guns around her, people who might have never held one before, and now there were more and more targets. Hanna had no intention of dying by friendly fire... again. The scythe strike had been enough.

Gripping the handle, Hanna tried to keep her arm steady, but it shook. She took a moment, tried to be calm. But it was hard. There had been no training yet, no preparation. Hanna wasn't sure what she expected, but she had hoped for a little something more than a "Oh, have a gun!" and a sharp shove into the fray.

More shots fired around her, and she flinched -- a shot rang out. It missed.

Caitlyn’s breath was coming in harder and harder. The monsters were getting closer and there was nothing she could do to stop them! This was the island all over again. These people promised so much and yet time and again the trainees were subjected to sick tortures for their personal enjoyment. Were they supposed to die again? The island game was un-winnable and this situation was no different.

Why give us guns? Of all of the weapons Caitlyn had had the opportunity to see on the island, the guns had been the least effective. Sure, they packed a powerful punch when they hit something. Guns were not for the untrained. Blades on the other hand? Well, anyone with an arm (Caitlyn glanced at Davey) could swing a blade and hurt something.

Grow up. Caitlyn scolded herself. It did no one any good to pine after a weapon she didn’t have. A gun was what the scythe-man had given her and a gun was what she would use.

Caitlyn narrowed her eyes and focused on the nearest monster. Its grotesque face shifted into a caricature of Caelius, complete with the cheery attitude and immaculate appearance. Caitlyn growled as she pulled the trigger.

BANG!

Right between the eyes!

A shot rang out and nailed one of the creeping things right between the eyes. "Damn," Hanna said again, eyes following the path back to -- Caitlyn, was it? "Well done then!" Credit where credit was due. Hanna could get behind that. Of course, she just wanted to prove her own worth and skill too.

Getting back on both feet, Hanna took a step forward from the line, took aim, and fired.

Bullseye.

A smirk broke out across her face, and she turned to face Scott. "Not bad, right, Cho?" she said, quickly correcting: "Uh, Scott." With her pride, she thought, restored, Hanna fell back into line and tried to set up the next shot. It was easier to focus on the task of shooting things than the horror of trying to rationalize what they were.

"Good shot, wow," Jordan said to Caitlyn, seeing one of the things jolted backwards by a flawless headshot. She was good; he was glad she was on their side.

It wasn't a situation any of them could get out of alone, certainly. All of them together, on the other hand ... Jordan wondered if that was what this training session was about. Or maybe it was about the continued sense of frustration and inexperience, being handed a weapon you didn't know the first God-damned thing about and being told to use it or die. Performance under pressure.

Don't get distracted. Aim. Fire.

Another miss - was it his faulty aim or the way the things shambled? He'd call it his mistake, because if it wasn't his fault he wouldn't be able to improve.

Once more. He was determined to get some damage in on the things. Creatures. Monsters. Whatever. They were an abomination, and they needed to be killed. The gun jerked in Jordan's hands, and once again he missed. He growled softly. Before the test, he would have assumed that he just couldn't do it, that this wasn't something he could keep up. The temptation to throw the weapon down was still strong. He squashed it fiercely. He wasn't going to let inexperience and nervousness convince him that he couldn't do it at all. He wasn't a failure, dammit; he'd get this right.

If they could finish killing the swarm of disgusting creatures advancing on them, that was. No. When, not if. They'd do it, he had to believe that.

Caitlyn stared at the monster for a second. She did it! She really hit it! The others’ comments made her flush with pride and she turned to smile back at them, just in time to see Hanna execute her own brilliant hit.

”You’re not bad yourself!”

Caitlyn turned expectantly to Jordan and- well, guns were hard to use.

A monster’s shriek drew her attention back to the task at hand.

Concentrate, Caitlyn. She reminded herself and raised her gun one more time. Remembering the trick, she superimposed Caelius’ face over that of the monsters’.

”Take that, you smarmy b*****d!” she cried, pulling the trigger.

BANG!

The bullet went a little wild and sunk into the creature’s shoulder. Well, they couldn’t all be headshots.

Scarlett's eyes hadn't left the grotesque, wobbling figure since she had finished firing off her rounds. They stayed glued on her as limbs fell, as bullets ripped open wounds in her skin, and still the figure just kept coming at them. Finally, as one last bullet rang out and echoed off of the buildings around them, she succumbed - but not without a disgusting show that made Scarlett grimace. She watched, not because she wanted to but because she felt it was something she should remember and learn from. These weren't humans, these were monsters, and she needed to drive that lesson into her own conscience.

Her eyes ripped away from the still figure as shrieks burst out of the houses around them, shifting quickly between each one as more shambling, deadly figures surged out towards their ragtag group of trainees. It was only Hanna's hand on her arm that tore her attention away from it and, as she leveled her acid eyes on the similar pair staring her in the face, she felt the need to survive rising in her. She had people other than herself to protect - not just Hanna and Scott, but everyone here. She had to contribute so that they could all walk away from this hell of a training session.

"Stay together," she said quickly, shifting to put her back to Hanna as she rounded on the first wave of gruesome targets. She threw a pointed glance at Scott too, trying to drag him into the safety of their circle by sheer will power. "If you get separated, you're an easy target." She knew that an animal alone was an animal that was dead, she had seen the tactic used a thousand times before, but she never expected to have to use the herd mentality in her own defense.

Then she swept her eyes out at the creatures and leveled her gun at the one that was closest to them, approaching swiftly and all the more terrifying because others were there to take its place even if it fell. Her hand shook a little, beyond her control, and as she squeezed the trigger she knew it was a total failure. The gun kicked, the bullet flew out, but it did nothing but give the dirt at the horde's feet a good slap in the face.

"s**t."

Shame swept over Scarlett in a wave, accentuated by Hanna's success behind her. She heard the congratulations between people she couldn't see and frowned at her own failure. On one hand, she was pleased that she didn't have to keep her eyes on everything at once, but she was upset that she was doing a miserable job.

"Focus," she breathed quietly to herself, trying to steady her gun hand and take aim. The shot rang out and again, she missed. The bullet found a home in the dirt where one of the creepy crawlies had just been. Even the smallest shifts in direction were hard to adjust to at long range.

She knew that, and yet, she could still feel the familiar irritation of being less than her best. It wasn't just her pride that was injured this time, it would be so much more if she couldn't get her s**t together.

"That," Gale said, looking at the creature on the ground in front of them. " - is disgusting. On so many levels."

As probably the youngest of the rest of the hunters, he probably should have been more scared. But the fact was, Gale Gentry was not afraid in the slightest. A little creeped out and mildly disturbed by the wailing, gnashing, bloodied teeth, but not scared. He'd managed to hit it, after all - that was certainly progress, especially since the thing was now, er...dead. Gale was feeling pretty damn good about it too.

At least until he heard the shrieking and suddenly found not only himself, but the rest of them surrounded by the same creatures they had just shot down.

"Oh," said Gale, blinking. "Well. This, er. Sucks."

With hands growing rapidly more practiced, he quickly reloaded the gun, closing one eye and extending his arm. Then he pulled the trigger.

"Bang bang. You're dead."

His first shot had not done nearly enough damage as Gale had wanted it to. The bullet had merely glanced off of the arm of the creature nearest to him, and Gale frowned, slightly put out. They were converging closer now, and he was beginning to feel like a fish in a barrel with someone shooting at them. One glance to his side at Ariane, Before, and Bix and the rest of the people around him, however, and Gale was reminded of why exactly he was doing this. Not just for himself, but at least he could maybe do something for the others. It wasn't that he needed them or they needed him, but maybe he could show himself out to be something other than just a kid.

Even if he was just a kid, made clear by the fact that his second shot had gone far and wide, Gale distracted by the inner musings he had going on in his head. He let out a few choice swear words, irritated by his own mistakes.
