He was glad that he didn't harpoon the ship but thinking about it, who would have even noticed ANOTHER hole in their vessel. Still, even a dumb shot didn't work, and he pulled his weapon back in from the waters, an empty shot without satisfaction of a good stabbing, and glanced to see Lizzy and Jove had started to take aim. "Hey guys! Bet I can hit Ril- uh, the tentacle thing first!" He shouted, smiling as he prepared his weapon. It seemed Calder was missing the point of saving a student and was more in it to turn the squid into sushi.
He took aim and fired at a rather wild tentacle.

"Oh? Its a contest then," Lizzy raised an eye brow at Calder's comment, grinning as she turned to look at him momentarily before turning to look at Jove, "Lets see who gets the first stab at this thing... Besides, the faster we do this, the faster that... Uh, what's-his-name-boil can be rescued!" She was thinking of the poor student, of course, but making it a competition was rather exciting and sort of fun!
Concentrating, her eyes scanned the water, harpoon raised as she frowned; imagine if the student couldn't breathe underwater... That would truly be a disaster!

"I don't know his name. Fish pants?" He said, deciding to just give the boil a nickname instead. "Okay, the first to hit the squid attacking Fishpants gets....ugh, a favor or something awesome." He said, pull ling his weapon back in from the water. HE HAD BEEN CLOSE but the stupid squid moved it's arm....leg....uh, whatever a tentacle was. Way to be annoying Riley 2. Calder was getting set on the idea that all things with noodle tentacles just plain sucked.
Aiming again, he aimed for a tentacle that seemed to be taunting him. He would stab this sucker. HE WOULD!

"... I guess Fishpants would do until we ask him for his name?" She replied, obviously distracted as she was staring into the sea rather than at Calder as she spoke. While she felt a little mean calling him that, its not as if it was a nickname or anything, right? Just a temporary name!
"I second the something awesome," She quickly added; using the word favor... Uh, not really something she was comfortable with, although it seemed like not many know about that, "We can figure it out later." She managed a chuckle as she tried to hit a tentacle that looked like was in her reach... But quickly went out of reach again, causing her harpoon to hit the water instead.
Sighing, she pulled it back; she would hit it at least once!

Jove whined again, taking extra effort to reel back in his harpoon while the other students made their attempts. His ears flattened back when he finally got the sharp implement back in his hands, and glanced over at Lizzy and Calder. They seemed to be having no luck so far, although they were bound to improve on their aim faster with so many attempts.
The pup didn't know how those two could joke in that situation, and not be so terrified. Jove was secretly hoping this was a bad dream as he took aim and tried again.

Its a pity Lizzy can't read Jove's mind, or she would have informed the boil that after going through Christmas town and dying once at the fire ball of a ferocious dragon that used a hill as a perch, a giant squid was... Mild. Or at least not as intimidating. It was still pretty frightening, but making jokes helped ease her fear!
"You can do it Jove!" She did, however, realize that he was having some trouble and thought that some encouragement might help.
Just then, a tentacle wandered into range. Eyes wide, Lizzy's grip on the harpoon tightened as she waited for it to come a little closer... A little closer... Thrusting the harpoon out, she felt it hit the tentacle and then something solid; she had managed to pin it to the boat! There was a moment of shocked silence from her as she stared at her handiwork, the tentacle wriggling violently, causing the boat to rock.
"I.. I did it!" She couldn't help grinning as she gripped onto the side of the boat happily.

He was always coming close. Just a hair away from hitting, but the thing was fast and it only made him want to stab it more and more. Repetitively if he could. If any part got to be dragged onto the ship, he would fight Cricket's bugs to get at it and tear it to pieces and then use it as bait to get a decent meal. He was not going to ever eat anything that resembled Riley, but the act of tearing it apart would be fun. Maybe he could keep a piece and show the ghoul that he took out one of her relatives.
Just as he was aimed and missed, AGAIN, he watched a harpoon land and looked over to see a rather stunned Lizzy. "Awww! I wanted to stab it first!" He whined, pulling his weapon back to him to go again. "Guess you win." He prepared his weapon for another go. Maybe he could get second.
"Hey Jove. You and me. Want to fight for second place?"

"We just had to get the one squid who isn't as slow as Barth." He grumbled, missing again as he watched his harpoon go sploosh in the water. It was then the ship rocked and he felt his hooves slide one way. Surprised. Calder started to slide across the deck and reached out for Jove, grabbing his shoulders before he regained his footing.
"Good job, anchor." He said, patting the pup on the head before trying for another go.

The pup puffed up again as he reeled in the harpoon, giving Calder a determined look that said "I can hit it," as he dragged the pole back to his hands. Then the huge tremor hit the ship and he only barely maintained his, and the kelpie's, balance. He whined and his fluffy ears flattened back.
Glancing at Calder one more time to make sure he wasn't in danger of sliding overboard, Jove hurled the harpoon again with all his strength.

"Well, it has a lot more tentacles to stab," Lizzy pointed out with a sheepish smile, gesturing towards the ocean as she struggled to keep her balance on the deck, holding onto the railings. Frowning slightly, she made her way to stand on the other side of Calder; if he starts sliding again, at least she could try to keep him from falling.
[And now, I need sleep. x.x Its almost 4am!]

To say that Elaphe had poor luck was becoming the understatement of the year-- no, probably even the century. After suffering a pillow forcibly exploded upside his head and getting more intimate with a cabin wall than he ever wanted, the diminutive little student had made a futile effort to get comfortable, rest up, and forget about the day's humiliations.
He dreamed of things he hated to admit were a comfort: Nosi, cheerfully gnawing on her own leg under the impression it was somehow a chewbone, Lapid, curled up serenely beside his warm sleeping tank, Donner, shaking and jingling with nervous affection...
And then he woke up to the ship unceremoniously throwing him forward, crashing face-first into the stairs before he was flopped onto the deck in a heap, right in front of a giant... a giant... Oh Jack what was that thing?!?!
Someone unfamiliar with the lad could've easily chalked his high pitched scream up to a small girl before he was dragged under, but nope; it was 100 percent Elaphe, spluttered out right before the poor sap was dragged under by a tentacle bigger than anything he'd ever seen. Even under the water, senseless panic still had him shrieking his lungs out, kicking, flailing, biting, and damn near wetting himself when he layed eyes on the thing's giant fang-lined mouth parts snapping towards him in the desperate throes of self defense.
It was official.
He was going to die. That thing was going to eat him and he'd go in a blaze of screaming, terrified anti-glory. And the worst part? His peers would get to be the ones fishing up his body, and they'd probably laugh at how pathetic it was.
... This was definitely not his day.

Despite whatever panic state Elaphe aka. Fishpants was in, Calder was more set on stabbing the creature for his own personal interest than thinking of the student first. If he actually bothered to think about it, he might consider the fact he was saving a student than trying to keep them under, but there was little sport in a student who could breath underwater. He was sure Fishpants was ffffiiinnneeee.
Calder smiled at Jove, hearing him for the first time and patted his hard on the back. "That's the spirit! Let's tear that thing to pieces!" And taking a spot by Jove's side, he aimed again and shot.

"Ahh. I'm always so close." The kelpie started to mutter some things in garbled kelpie that, if translated, would have gotten him in trouble if Cricket heard.

"Oh for the love of sugar cubes." He breathed out, looked down, and then went back to pulling his spear back and trying again. The more he missed, the more he hated this creature. He hoped he could stab it's heart instead at this point.

It was clear. Calder was not a harpooner. He would never go into the sea and start a grand career as a squid assassin. Then again, if he started to hate this creature any more, he might make that his life purpose just so he could eliminate each and every squid from the sea. That was a nice thought. He tried again to shoot it, gritting his teeth.
