The door swung open to what appeared to be a large hallway, an entryway, from which ascended a stone staircase, which cast a large shadow under it. There was a somewhat cursory rug on the ground around the staircase, which appeared to lead up to a metal trapdoor.

On the rug, near the door, was spread out a large cloak and then another one rolled up apparently as a makeshift pillow. Crumbs of bread were around it, along with a dried-out inkwell, a brittle-looking quill, and a leatherbound book.

She wasn't sure that a smile suited Charonite's face, but either way, it earned a small smile from her in return. Nemesis took a step back, giving him room to open the door so that they could move on to the next leg of their journey. Maybe Damon would be close-by, and then they could worry about getting home. "...And," she hesitated over the next words, before settling firmly on them, "thank you." Nemesis meant it, Charonite had really been the reason they were able to make it out of the dungeon room.

"I really... wouldn't have figured out how to get out of here." It was embarrassing to admit that she couldn't have done what Charonite had done. Somehow, the feeling of embarrassment was only intensified because it was Charonite, and not someone she knew well (or even on the same 'side' as her).

She warily looked out into the hallway, stepping through the doorway and into the new area. The stairs seemed to be the obvious place to head to first, but she lingered, trying to be better about examining her surroundings before abandoning them. She paced towards what seemed to be a very poor, makeshift bed. "Do you think someone was here recently?" she poked the toe of her heel boot against a bread crumb before bending down to pick up the book. She held it out to Charonite, as if to say that he might get something more out of reading it.

Charonite had looked at her over the thank-you; he merely said, "You're welcome," though he said it quite gruffly as though he were embarrassed. Or didn't want to talk about it. He was a great deal politer than one would have thought a General-King to be -- and indeed, a bunch of his Lieutenants would have been annoyed that he swatted Nemesis around far less than their own selves. Hematite might have started a petition. Nealite might have been amused. "Don't thank me until we're out of here."

But he took the book from her and opened up the cover.

The front page of the book read, in black handwritten ink:

being the journal of

WARIN CARTWRIGHT

APPRENTICE

Normally, he would have ditched the book and focused on the trapdoor -- Charonite had his eye on the prize, which was freedom, and freedom appeared to be the staircase in front of them which he was enthusiastic to embrace. But Warin, who had been the only one to escape from the cells below as Elaine had queried --

Not much of a reader, either, he still flipped over to the next page. Not taking his eyes off it he said, "Look for food."

"Being here is better than being stuck in there, so I really will... thank you for that." Then again, she was wondering why she had to argue over when she would thank Charonite. It seemed stupid, once she reflected on it. Having learned from before, she gave Charonite some space to observe the book. She seemed to be in a far greater mood now that they had overcome one boundary, though they possibly could be heading towards another. It was progress.

"Other than bread crumbs?" she said jokingly, but immediately bent down to sift through the bundled up cloak that had likely served as a pillow. There didn't seem to be much else to look through - Nemesis did not expect to find a dinner plate full of food hiding underneath the rug.

The journal appeared to chronicle the recent life of one Warin Cartwright, apprentice to a man he referred to simply as 'the Master,' and not one who wrote a great deal of context, unfortunately, into his journal. As it turned out, most people did not write diaries with the expectations they would be read, and Warin's was overtaken at points with shopping lists for peculiar items and to-do lists for peculiar errands.

At a certain point the handwriting became worse and it appeared to be his diary in jail -- bitterer, longer, and more reflective, but not much more helpful. They were in a city called Camelot, in a prison under it, where 'forgotten people,' wrote Warin, 'are left to rot.'

A few sentences caught Charonite's eye -- but a moment later, he might have wished they hadn't --

-- I do not know what is more unbearable, what the Warden wants with Tristan or what the King's guards want with Elaine -- I have never been so driven to madness and a thousand murders, but all within the impotence of my own head --

then:

But there is some hope.

and, later:

They have left us to die.

There is no other answer.

One way or another, they have left us to die.

and, finally, at the end:

I came from nothing. I am Warin Cartwright. I will leave this place.

"If there's only bread crumbs, don't bother."

Charonite's face had become strangely flat. So had his voice. It had reached nigh-on levity before, but now it was cold rusted iron the same as the doors that had barred the cells. His eyes were on the pages as he read, reading one part of the page a number of times before closing the book. Neither of them were actually hungry, but food was an old habit and concern.

For a moment it seemed as though he would say something else, but instead: "Get the cloaks. We're going."

She glanced over her shoulder, taking note of the expression Charonite's face. Nemesis bundled and picked up the cloaks first, deciding that doing what Charonite wanted before she asked him a question would give her better results. "What did it say? Please don't tell me 'nothing'." She also thought that adding a 'please' to her question would earn better results. Though, the one time she had gotten an answer was when she had practically demanded it from him. In time she'd figure out the best way to hear what she needed and wanted to hear from him.

She moved to the base of the staircase, putting a foot on the first step before glancing back to Charonite again, as if to make sure he was coming with before plunging into an unknown territory.

He took one of the mouldering cloaks from her and draped it around his shoulders, fastening it so that it hid his cavalier garb -- though with the purple dreadlocks, he'd be an odd sight anyway. He tossed the other one around hers, though at least he let her cover up her senshi fuku by herself.

"It said this dungeon was abandoned," he said brusquely. "And run by men no better than me. Let's go. I never liked being underground."

Charonite was already ascending the steps with her.

The trapdoor was locked, on the outside. It was just as well.

Still, Warin must have gotten out somehow.

Nemesis wrapped the cloak around her shoulders, tying it in a simple knot around her neck. If she needed to pull it around to completely cover her fuku, she could. She mounted the steps with him, walking just a step ahead of Charonite. Reaching the top of the stairs, she lifted a hand to press her palm flat against the trap door, uncertain as to whether she should open it or not. It really was their only option, unless they wanted to go back into the dungeon and chit-chat with Charonite's doorfriend.

So, pushing forward, she tried to open it, lips turning down into a hard frown when the trap door wouldn't budge. "It's locked. ******** it. ******** ******** it." Did she have a right to be frustrated? Yes, yes she did.

Charonite ascended back down the staircase and underneath -- he was already yanking away the rug in the shadow of the stones, face the impeccable blankness you got of trying the last avenues before violence escalated.

There was a hole where one of the large tiles of stone should have been, a hole down into complete darkness.

It was surrounded by blasted bits of rock and, it appeared to be, scorch marks, like a bomb had gone off, an explosion of pent-up energy.

There was no telling how far it went.

Giving in to frustration, she irritably pounded her fist against the trap door, as if that would help. When it didn't, she followed Charonite back down the stairs. For a few minutes she helped Charonite rummage through the few things on the floor before she noticed the hole. Needless to say, she thought finding a magical way up was better than going down into darkness.

She moved away from Charonite's side, going over to the hole to examine it. It certainly looked like... someone had blown their way into the stone tiles. "Are we going... down?" she asked Charonite, because really... it seemed like the only option, like someone had done this to get out when they couldn't get through the trap door.
