muffins_love lol no i play tuba nda i hardly could tell the diff after playing for abit biggrin Same, I'm a tuba player. Before I started playing an instrument I was going to pick up flute. The BD told me that there were too many and I should try another instrument, brass perhaps. So I tried out the Euphonium and the Tuba. I guess with braces it was more comfy on the tuba (as my mouth/lips were a little stretched). So... yeah here I am playing Tuba...
After I got them removed I had retainers and those sucked a bit more because it's hard to regulate spit. I'd take them off for performances or when I got pissed off at them.
After getting them both removed I really find no difference with brace playing and braceless. I'd imagine it to be quite an interesting case for French Horn and Trumpet players based on the previous posts...

Actually, I play French Horn, and I've had braces for a little over 2 years now. At first, it was a little difficult getting up to the high notes, but you get used to it. One of the only things I realized is that you have to tighten and loosen your lips more than normal, and even though I haven't had my braces off yet, that should probably give you a bigger range when they DO get taken off. Also, I've never used any type of wax or anything that supposedly helps you, and I adjusted really well. Occasionally when I play high notes for a while it leaves a slight imprint on the inside of my lips, but it disappears after a few minutes. So I really don't think it affected me too much.

Raine_Storms I'm actually in the same boat as you. I'm getting my braces on next wednesday, and I'm totally freaking out. I play the tenor sax, and I'm worried that it'll hurt when I roll my lips over my bottom teeth. Can anyone tell us if it really hurts that much or not? As a clarinet I can tell you that your ombusure will suck for awhile, but you'll get used to it ^^. Just it will wear out sooner than other people. Don't worry though, it doesn't hurt. Ironically I get mine off in two weeks XD. I've been playing with braces for the last two years. It took about a month to get comfortable again.

I had braces before I started playing my baritone. But I asked my orthodontist if there was anything I could do to make it not hurt and he just said don't play the trumpet or the french horn. And he also said that if anything to first week is the hardest and right after you get your braces off because you have to get used to it again.

it was hard for me to learn how to play my flute after i got braces, but i soon learned and became a better player. but after i got them off it was earsier, and i became an even better player, but i personally think that braces are not that bad but they still suck.

Braces were horrible. I play flute, and it took me about a week and a half to fully adjust my embouchure for it. When I got them off, it took two weeks to adjust back. D:
I got lots of cuts on the inside of my upper lip too.

I'm a flautist and I just got my braces off two months ago. I was really just a beginner when I got braces, and I didn't have any problems adjusting.
Now, as for when I got them off... @__@ took me a week to adjust, honestly. My tone is waaaay better now. One thing I noticed was that with braces it was harder to do dynamics.

I have braces, and I play the sax, and now after only playing 3 months with them I have my braces completely imprinted in the gums in front of it. I have to take painkillers every night

I had braces (not anymore whee ) but it doesnt hurt. But it might at the begining because well all braces hurt at the begining. But after awhile it goes away. and it never messes up your playing! my whole band has braces except me and a bass drum player

I had maybe a week of pain but practise through it and you get used to it. i got them half way through my second year and there are things more painfull (toung splinters from an over usd reed) but yeah, it doesn't hurt half as much as some ppl say

I'd have to say it's not easy to play with braces. Woodwinds don't have to much of a problem. It never really hurts, but it's just a weird change. Brass players, you better get a HECK lot of wax, and practice a lot more. 5 people and I have both had a difficult time with playing, as it cut up our gums, and we're all brass. I've never seen much an issue with Woodwinds though.
