Before following, Shrirak gave a small polite bow to Veldrin. As they meandered through the area, she noted all interior work.
"Wonderful management," she muttered her eyes flickering to note the interiors near bear appearance."And so cozy too..."
The goblin mere flickered their eyes back at her and then continue its search. Eventually one was found. As she passed the goblin, she whispered "Thank you."
The shocked goblin was ignored by her as she examined the room. "It will do, I suppose." She muttered under her breath. And then turned to the slave,"Would you mind helping me get my stuff in order?"
For a second the slave remained motionless and the eagerly nodded. It move towards one of the bags Shrirak had placed on the ground only to get it hit. "Not that one, that one." She pointed to the brown bag.
Taken aback, it nodded slowly and walked over to the other bag. It began to sort out her clothes as she began to go over the papers in her hand. Placing and organizing them on the old and slightly unstable desk.
She turned to find the slave had finished. For a second she was going to bark at it to be gone, but then simply said, "Thank you may leave me."
Wide eyed it nodded slowly and then turned to leave. Shrirak let her lips press into a disgusted line before opening the letter in her hand. Well, I at least got some good news out of this whole thing, She thought reading through it and then smiled.

Chalthara arrived back at House Hun'Afin the same way she had left; with austere elegance...but significantly less fear, of course. She now knew what the leader of their city wanted from her and from her (well, Veldrin's) House. What Matron Ulvira wanted her to do was simple -- although Chalthara hadn't expected it, she was certainly relieved to hear it. Surely Lolth would support House Hun'Afin and therefore the current hierarchy in the war to come. She had raised Chalthara from obscurity to Matronhood, and she was currently waiting for the opportune moment to strike out against the one who had real control of the House. Her moment would come, she knew. Lolth had not let her die during the fall of the house of her birth, and Lolth would not let her fail now.

Would she?

Chalthara shook her head, chasing the thought from her head as she made her way towards the audience chamber, where she hoped to find Veldrin and inform him of the details of her conference with Matron Ulvira...and the untrustworthy (even by drow standards) Matron of House Tor'Afin.

Veldrin sat in his office working on the duty roster for the next day when a distinct series of knocks on the door, the pattern distinguishing the drow on the other side of the door as a member of the Shadow Guard, interrupted him.

"Enter," said the Patron of the House, not looking up from his paperwork.

"Matron Chalthara has returned, m'lord, and is en route to the audience chamber. Instructions?"

"Send Malag to the audience chamber when he gets here," Veldrin replied, rising from his chair and starting for the audience chamber. The guardsman quietly slipped out of the room behind Veldrin and took up a post beside the door to relay the message to the House Assassin when he arrived.

The assassin arrived at the audience chamber soon after, but well before Chalthara, and made himself rather comfortable in the throne that Jys'yl and Kikato before him had reigned from, waiting for his "Matron" to arrive and spill the details of her meeting with the Matron of the First House.

Nearly recovered from his test of prowess and the physical damage of the dart, the slightly poisoned human easily took note of the flying disc returning the Matron of his house.

With all haste he finished donning his armor and nearly sprinted towards the throne room, causing several unaware servants to have a very bad day as he charged passed them in the usually spacious halls.

Upon entering the throne room he took his post without a word, standing firmly to the side of the chamber in a slight Vent in the wall, playing the part of an omnious statue to any unwary vistors.

Malag heard a fainting clamor from the distant halls, almost like a renegade suit of armor had decided to race the kitchen's finest dishes. He wasn't certain what it was, but merely shrugged and continued onwards. He arrived at the Weapon Master's office, guided by memory, and was greeted by a guard who informed him that his true destination was the Audience Chamber. Malag sighed and thanked the guard somewhat sarcastically. He'd walked all this way for naught... However, Malag supposed it good that he make himself familiar with the surroundings, and thus was glad for the opportunity, though his feet disagreed. A short while later, he arrived at the door of the Audience Chamber. It was open, and he walked within calmly and gracefully. His eye took note of the "Statue" in the wall, it's armor familiar from their brief combat. He paid no mind to it though, and bowed before the Weapon Master. Though he didn't voice it, Malag was curious as to why the Weapon Master was seated upon the throne. He rose and spoke.

"Thank you for your time, Jabbuk. As you know, I'm new here, and thus a tad unfamiliar with the House Protocols. I assume that the basic rules are mere common sense, but if there are more intricate ones, I should like to learn them; I would hate to disappoint my superiors."

Veldrin nodded his acknowledgment of Malag's concerns. "Yes, there are a few things you should know about, and this information is never to leave the walls of this House. Things work a bit differently here than in other Qu'ellars...well, quite a bit differently, really. Firstly, within the walls of the House, and while there are no visitors, the typical matriarchal system doesn't exist. Male and female are equals socially, and one's position in the hierarchy is determined by skill, not gender. Of course, when outsiders are among us, males must play a subservient role temporarily to maintain appearances."

He paused for a moment, giving Malag a chance to process the information before continuing the debriefing. "Another thing you should be aware of is where the true power of the House lies. When I had first introduced myself as Weapons Master and Patron, it was implied that I was the Matron's consort. You had guessed correctly in the fact that I am, in fact, the actual ruler of the Qu'ellar. Matron Chalthara is merely a figurehead who is my representative when dealing with other Houses and maintains the appearance of normality. She has about as much real authority here as any other member of the nobility."

"Remember," he continued, his voice picking up a stern tone, "this information does not leave this House. If any outsider learns this, and I find out that you leaked it, I will kill you myself. Now then," his tone returning to neutral, "was there anything else you needed?"

Malag couldn't help but listen intently. He could scarcely believe his ears; a MALE was running a Qu'ellar? Truly, this was shocking; Malag's jaw nearly dropped, but he caught himself and remained composed. He merely nodded firmly, though his eyes showed less certainty. Was this a trap? Some form of trickery used to test the new blood for loyalty? Malag decided to watch his step, and his back, very carefully. He spoke quietly.

"I understand. My lips are those of stone, and that is how they shall remain. However, if you'll forgive my incredulity; how did this come to happen? As I understand it, the Matrons ruled with the gifts of Lolth, and their will was unassailable."

A faint smirk crawled across Malag's lips, but he quickly snapped back into his serious demeanor.

"Apparently, the rumors and legends have been false. Therefore, I shall serve as dutifully as any, and it has been my pleasure to be privvy to such exclusive knowledge. Rest assured, Jabbuk, your trust will not be abused."

He relaxed a bit; he had been a bit tense before, but as the realization slowly settled in, his adrenaline began to drain. He remained wary of a trap nonetheless, but proceed more calmly.

"As for other needs, I suppose that that is up to you M'lord; if there is anything I can do to be of assistance to the House, say the word and it shall be so."

"It is not your place to question the way of things," Chalthara snapped, no longer in the ebuillent mood she had found herself in before. She knew that Veldrin was really in power, but she had never met this new member of the House, and Veldrin was disclosing important, very dangerous House secrets to him? Although she was only a figurehead, Chalthara still found herself quite angry. And obviously so.

"And since I retain the power of any member of the noble class -- say, a second daughter -- you are still obligated to show respect." She narrowed her eyes once more at Malag before turning towards Veldrin. "Who is this?"

She wanted to know if she could trust him (as far as drow can trust one another, that is) before disclosing the results of her meeting with Matron Ulvira.

"Chalthara," Veldrin, while annoyed at being snapped at by his appointed figurehead, would enjoy putting her in line and began to respond in a rather smug tone, "meet Malag Im'Tyrr...the new Qu'el'velguk, and is therefore privy to certain information. The reason you haven't met him yet is due to the fact that he has been out disposing of a liability to the House. As I have already stated, should he prove to be a liability himself, he will be dealt with personally...as will you, should you continue to openly question my judgement."

He then turned his attention back to Malag to continue his conversation with him. "I currently have nothing for you at the moment, so why don't you go find yourself some suitable living quarters, and I'll show you to your office later. I need to speak with Chalthara privately."

Chalthara did not glare at Veldrin, but she still regarded him coldly. Perhaps she had been rude because she did not quite know what to make of him. He was not a Matron by any stretch of the imagination, so she could not treat him with all the obeisance and propriety required of a leader of one of the other houses. Nor could she treat him as any other male; as an inferior. Although she had never been as obtuse or needlessly cruel (the keyword being "needlessly") as some other followers of Lolth, she was still not quite used to having to answer to a male drow. She did not respond to his mention of her questioning his judgement. It would certainly keep up appearances if I did not respond favorably to everything you said, she thought with resentment. And my will is still perfectly unassailable, you fool of an assassin.

"You have my thanks for completing your task," Chalthara said to Malag. She wasn't apologizing, but she did not seem as hostile as before towards the new House assassin. Her eyes, however, urged (or perhaps ordered) him to leave as quickly as possible.

Malag was no fool; he wasn't sure what to believe about the social order of things, and loathe was he to test waters that he wasn't sure of. Either way, it was better safe than sorry: the female Drow present was certainly of some social class, if not a Matron in proper rite. He bowed respectfully, and the back of his mind tingled; Veldrin had complimented his work, and Malag was pleased. He met the female's eyes and spoke clearly and respectfully; better too much than too little.

"It is my pleasure to serve the house. It's goals are my own."

He heard Veldrin's words, and gave him an affirmative nod.

"I understand. Thank you for your time, Jabbuk."

He saluted both the Weapon Master and the "Matron", and departed swiftly; he was in no mood to upset his superiors at this early a juncture, and he was still a mite sore from the battle. He quickly hunted down a servant, and ordered it to show him to a room.

Several minutes and long corridors later, he arrived in his room. He quickly set about re-arranging the furniture to suit his taste, and was quite satisfied when his work was complete. He searched the room for any hidden traps or doors before laying down upon the bed to relax for a while. He would sleep lightly, if at all; it did not behoove a Drow to sleep soundly on his first time in a strange house, particularly one as strange as this one...

Once Malag had left the chamber, Veldrin flipped a small switch on the side of the throne which caused the doors to swing shut of their own accord and magically soundproof themselves.

"Now then," he said, crossing his legs and tenting his fingers beneath his chin, "how fared the meeting with Matron Ulvira?"

Chalthara watched Veldrin for a moment, wondering if he even cared that he was sitting on the throne. Probably not. Chalthara did not much care, either. She was not that scrupulous.

"The meeting went well, although we have reason to be suspicious of House Tor'Afin -- moreso than before. The first order of business is that we have been ordered to destroy House Alaenduis; it is not only an order from Matron Ulvira, but the will of Lady Lolth herself. The second is that the Matron of Tor'Afin offered us help; said she had strategies. She does not think this House worthy of its holy task. I refused the alliance, believing that we should not become entangled in such things. Still, if we fail, by some horrible mischance, I have reason to believe that Tor'Afin will collect our dues and see us all dead."
PostPosted: Sun Mar 14, 2010 7:27 pm

Veldrin remained silent for several moments, as he mentally picked apart the information Chalthara presented. "I see," he finally said. "From what I've heard, Tor'afin's Matron is an especially ambitious one, and she is likely to do anything to hinder our efforts and take our position as Second House. We must strike immediately, while Aleanduis is still unaware of the danger and before Tor'afin can inform them."

"Now then, it's time to assemble the nobles of the House to form battle plans, and I believe you still have something of mine," he said as he extended his hand, expecting the return of the runestone he slipped her as she departed.

Tagerion grunted softly from his post, excitment already building in his veins. Though his concept of the drow language was coarse at best, he could manage to get one solitary point out of the conversation.

There was drow blood to be spilt.

Not getting ahead of himself, he kept his excitment in check. There were still no guarantees that the human would be partcipating in the conflict, even if he personally thought it folly to leave him behind. These denizens of the dark had yet to see the man truly fight, uninhibited by rules or the choke-chain of his masters, fully clad in his magical equipment.

As customary, stormhold buzzed softly, echoing its master's emotions.
