idk, I've always preferred the western take on RPGs (Neverwinter Nights, Elder Scrolls, etc.) to Japanese-styled RPGs. I do, however, love the original Tales of Phantasia.

I like how Western RPG kinda make it so you can make your own person in the more recent ones at least like Oblivion, Fable 2, Mass Effect, and the other ones. I like Japanese RPG's but I think I could only stand to play them if they're: 1. 2D (I love 2D stuff.) 2. Have an actual interesting story (Japanese RPG are lacking this nowadays, they've done everything)

I've generally found most J-RPGs to be derivative and linear. Elder Scrolls, Fallout, KotOR, and A-RPGs like Diablo and Baldur's Gate are what I grew up with and treasure. I absolutely hated Neverwinter Nights and found KotOR very tedious at first because of the cumbersome AD&D engine. What a horrible combat mechanic that is. stare

The thing I like most about western RPGs is that 99% of the time you ultimately have control over how your character relates to the world and how that character develops. j-RPGs are just too linear for me and relies too much on storylines, cutscenes, over-the-top melodrama, etc.

I also hate that unlike western RPG, they always push this whole morality and friendship down your throat. "YEAH! We can beat this totally hard, over leveled boss, with the power of friendship! YEAAAAAAAAAHHHHHH" and all your party members say variations of that phrase for like an hour before the fight starts only to be killed in a single turn. However once again I do think that sometimes JRPG's have interesting enemy designs especially old school ones. Though personally the only RPG that I've really liked and played a majority of was Chrono Trigger for the SNES which is should finish at some point in the future.

Yeah, morality, interaction with other NPCs, and essentially almost anything that you do is, more often than not, a CHOICE in western RPGs and you're ultimately deciding what role exactly your character plays. I guess, as a whole, that's the deciding factor for me; jRPGs just don't really give me the thrilling feeling of choice and decision as much as a western RPG. Alos, instead of becoming attached to a character because it is your creation, you mostly rely on hoping there is a good storyline and good cast of characters. And I think I've finally exhausted my points, so I'm going to leave it at that. xd

That's probably a good idea. I'm not much of a RPG player anyway. I just know enough about them and the fanbase to make fun of them. I mostly like fighters and side scrolling shooters like Contra! NOW CONTRA IS MANLY!

ScorchMaster16 CliffordTheBigRedDemon cause anyone in their right mind woudl rather play FF than wank off to videos.....hahah so this neighbor kid looked up stuff o our computer upstairs so now my dad has to pay for blocker software No offense to FF fans but can't wanking off to videos and playing FF kinda go in the same boat. (Sorry, FFVII fans have given me a great disdain for the series except for six and the soundtrack. Square always has good soundtracks) hahah true uber FF fans need lives... Rotting Gnarl Also, porn= thinking about women= something there is no place for in this thread. agreed no more of this dirty talk. but in all seriousness ihaven't played and actualyl had time to work on a good rpg in ages... talk2hand

Is there any doubt? Not at all, but even so it has some bad titles in it's series like 4. Metal Slug 3 was the best one. Metal Slug 5 was the most metal. Seriously you have to play 5. 1, 2, and X are good. I don't know what to think of 6. And I've yet to play 7.

Metal Gear, Twisted Metal, Metal Arms, Metal Dungeon...well, maybe not that last one. sweatdrop
