Kimi quickly stood up and closed the phone book She grabbed her purse and checkbook, and an overnight bag she had ready to go in the closet then looked at Trace, Stay here, watch Tess, If anything brakes I'm billing your uncle." And with that she marched out the door. "Tess, I'll be back soon, I just need to drop off this stuff at work." She lied to keep the girl calm and happy.

Minutes later she pulled into the hospital's parking lot and was shown up to Demmy's room. The new girl was there and Demmy was still asleep, they had him hooked up really well and he looked like he would be okay. "Here there, Want me to take care of that?" She took the stack of paperwork from the table and placed it on her own lap so that she could get started. Her office gave her and her immediate family heath insurance so she would have to make out the paperwork so that he was her brother. "It's nice to see you Val, Next time he passes out, call me." She glaced up at the girl from her dancing pen and smirked. "What did they say was wrong with him this time?"

I saw that Kimi had failed to notice he was awake, for he had turned back over and was now lying in a fetal position facing the far side of the room. "His appendix," I started, fiddling with my fingers, "they're taking out his appendix," I tried to sound cool about it, but the honest truth was that my nerves were running wild today. "Er, Kimi?" she looked up. "I, uh, I had to...um tell him that I was his...uh wife," I mumbled, "and if you tell them I lied...er, um..." I would be in trouble. End of story. "So in the papers, could you um...mention that...that we are um...marrie_" I was cut off by another opening door. I quickly sat on the side of the bed and began to smooth his hair. Four years of acting lessons in New York had to pay off sometime, I figured. It was the doctor again. "You're the patients sister, and you're his wife, correct?" he clarified, scribbling something on a clipboard he supported between chest and hand. I nodded a smiled weakly toward Kimi, as if to apologize. "Very well," he said, ushering in two nurses to wheel out the bed into the operating room. "You two can finish up the paperwork in here, if you'd like, and make your way to the waiting room until the procedure has ended. I'm going to estimate that it will take around an hour or two, so just sit tight." he smiled and strode out, shutting the door behind him. I looked down at my feet and tightened my fingers in a knot.

Kimi nodded She was a quick writer and it was not long before she had all of the paper work completed. She knew everything about Demmy he might as well have been her brother, She knew his family, his history, his eating habits. They were very close. After everything was ready to go she Walked into the writing room and opened her bag taking out another folder of paper work, but this was for work. She wrote things down in an elegant precise pen that gave an air of wisdom and education. "You didn't have to say Wife, They'll think he's a *****." She said quietly and glanced up at her raising an eyebrow.

Withing seconds she was once again out of my reach, and here I was to stand alone. Pacing, my thoughts skimmed over the past few years tracing over every moment with her I had lost due to my ego, stupid comments or just when I lacked the ability to express how I felt. I wanted to open up to Kimi, but knew not how to do so. It wasn't until I placed my hand on the door knob that the door flew back, hitting me right in the face in the process. I stumbled backwards a few steps, grabbing onto one of the bed posts to hold my balance. "What the hell?!"

"Weeeeeee!" I twirled around throughout the entirety of the kitchen until hitting the fridge hard, creating a change in path I was unsure of until I hit the door of my bedroom. Not noticing that Kimi had left and where Trace's exact location was I swung my door open; a slight obstacle was in the way, though. My eyes lit up once I saw him. "Hello! How are youuuuuuuuuu?"
"I'm perfectly fine," with his hand over half of his face and a sense of sarcasm lacing his words. However, my intoxication prevented me from noticing much at all.
"That's good! I'm gonna order some pizza? Want any?"
"No, I'm not all that hungry."
"Are you suuuuuure?" I grinned, picking up the phone.
"Yes," he sighed.
"You're loss." I lazily dialed the number, falling back onto my bed while doing so, before someone answered. "Hello this is Pizza Shack, Danny speaking, how may I be of service to you?"
"Hiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii Danny! Can I have 7 extra large pizzas, with extra cheese, pepperoni, peppers, meatballs, marshmallows, pineapple, onion rings and a side of cocktail sauce."
"Ugggh..sure. What's your address?"
I proceeded to tell him the address and he replied with the ten minutes or less otherwise it's free. I didn't bother listening to how much it would cost or how they didn't usually put marshmallows on pizza, but oh well. Turning onto my side, I glared at Trace and patted the bed next to me for him to sit down.

" I didn't, uh..." I looked down at the sneakers I'd laced firm to my feet before making my leave earlier. "I didn't think it would, er...what I mean is that I think..." For whatever reason the situation left me without even the simplest of words. I took a breath and started again, wishing I was able to take it all back, to hose off the canvas and find myself back in the dorm room unpacking my things and staying out of everyone else's business. "What I mean is that I don't think I was...thinking." I prayed someone would give me a break. I was hardly old enough to drive and yet I was sitting in a hospital arguing over my imaginary husband. Another shiver ran cool down my back. Marriage was not a subject I could take lightly, the way many other people do. It is a belief of mine that you should have some kind of idea of permanency with the person you wish to marry to be sure you are ready to vow a lifetime of love and dedication to them. "Mrs. Convivial?" the nurses voice stirred me out of the sea of distraction I had lost myself in. I nodded toward Kimi and stumbled toward the desk. "Yes?" I nearly didn't finish the word, having been cut off by her pointer finger snapping up to signify one second as she used the other hand to scribble something on a clipboard. She set down the pen and looked up at me. "Can I have some identification, ma'am?"
"I...uh, he...left it at home,"
"Your identification, sweetie." she placed one hand on her hip and flipped a piece of hair from covering her left eye.
"I don't...have it. I was in a rush to get here because I didn't know what was wrong with him and I was just so worried that if I didn't take him soon enough that something horrible would happen and...and..." It felt like my eyes were cracking. I cried a little, to add effect.
"Shhh... hon' quit your worryin' it's fine for now, alright?"
I nodded and sat back down.

I plopped down beside Tess, patting her on the head. Running my fingers through her hair a few times, I noticed that she had gotten highlights since the last time we saw each other. Her face still remained as pale as ever, never tanning or burning the slightest bit no matter how much sunlight she was exposed to. Almost making me wonder how much sun block she consumes in a year to keep her doll-like complexion. "You drank too much didn't you?" She smiled wide in response, and rested her head on my knee; I almost wanted to pull away from her, but didn't want to offend her in doing so. "Your such a pain, you know that. Making me and everyone else around you worry consistently with...everything." She nodded slightly and closed her eyes. Hopefully, she wouldn't pass out and leave me with way too many pizza's with quite the odd toppings to eat alone. Well, that was if I even had the courage to open the boxes. Maybe Gab would pop up out of the blue and eat them, since he's always lusting for some type of meal.
"Trace?" Tess mumbled.
"Yeah?"
"I love you..." sitting back up, and held my focus. Abruptly, she had maneuvered herself onto my lap with her lips against mine in a haphazard and raw manner. I placed my hands on her shoulders to draw away from the kiss. "Tess! What are you doing?"
"What did it look like I was doing," she took my hands in hers, bringing them down to our sides and persisted on kissing me; softening as time went on. It didn't take long for the effects of the aimless and overused air conditioning to diminish.

I coughed, spewing nothing but dry air. "The procedure went well, you're going to be fine." What time is it? I almost asked. My eyes opened and closed, and I became unsure of whether or not I wanted to be awake. "Just relax," the nurse fluffed an unfamiliar feeling pillow beneath my head. My eyes adjusted, and automatically noted the young woman's content, yet eager, face. She had on a smooth layer of clear mascara, something you'd only notice if the person had very light, blonde lashes. Beneath them were deep, cool blue eyes. "What..." I coughed, gagging a bit on the saliva that had finally conjured up in my mouth, "what...uh...time is it?" She smiled and held a gleaming silver watch a few feet from her face. "3:45," she unfolded a blanket from the chair beside my bed and smoothed it across my starchy white sheet. The blanket she was tucking me into was colored much like one I'd encountered in Tess's room last evening, then realized that it was exactly the same, and certainly not the kind of thing that would belong to a hospital. "Where did that come from?" I gestured toward the comforter. "Oh, your wife brought that in half an hour ago," I noticed now an adorable southern twang in her voice..."wait my wife?" I choked. "Yeah," she said, adjusting the curtains separating me from a sickly elderly woman, "sure are lucky to have a girl like that. Sweet thing, she is. And I reckon she's pretty lucky herself," she winked. I pretended to have an idea of what she meant, then remembered what had happened previous to my operation.

Kimi Had been sitting in the waiting room Her nervousness not showing in the least, The extent of her emotion was portrayed only in her rhythmically tapping foot. When she was told that the operation was a success and that Her boy would be asleep for maybe the next hour or so, she took her leave going outside to smoke and calm down. Once her cigg was gone she walked back inside and up to The boy's room. He was awake and speaking to a nurse. "Hey, Kid." She said in her low smooth voice. "How are you feeling?" She walked over to his side and brushed his hair out of his face. He was so healthy looking, it surprised her. "The Doctor said you probably can't come home until tomorrow at the earliest. Sorry. I'm going to cancel the gig tonight. The whole family's to worried about you. Tess is probably out of her mind by now. I just hope that Trace doesn't let her use the phone..." She shook her head and sighed. When ever she bought pizza in large quantities it was her who had to pick up the tab.

"Nice to see you, Kimi," I sighed. The nurse paid no mind to my guest and continued to straighten up the area. "If there is anything else you need, there's a button right there on the arm of the bed, hon', just press it and someone'll be up soon as you need 'em," she reassured me, tucking another pillow under my head. "Thank you," I muttered. She turned and walked out. "So," I smirked, "where's my wife?" Just as I spoke the door opened again and in walked the new girl.

I bit my lip and carried the tray from the cafeteria in and placed it on Demetri's bedside table. "Sorry," I murmured under my breath, then stepped back. I felt ashamed for having not brought something up sooner, and for the fact that what I'd brought him looked disgusting, even for hospital food.

I always had an issue with saying no or denying anything that provided me with some form of pleasure. It wasn't until afterwards that I would notice the extent of the damage and regret the act; self control was the one thing I lacked the most over everything else. I could recall every caress, sigh and impulse but it seemed as if I was watching it unveil from afar rather than being there. A set of three repetitive knocks on the door beckoned me away from Tess. "I'll be back," I rose from the disheveled sheets, and walked out to the living room.
"Pizza shack would like to formally apologize for the late-ness of your order. However, due to the unnecessary toppings we cannot stand by our ten minutes or less obligation."
"That's fine, I could care less." I took the boxes from him, placed them on the couch, and threw a few twenties at him before slamming the door. shut.

Gab smelled Pizza, lots of Pizza. He followed the Pizza guy upstairs and laughed when he saw that it was for him. He let himself into Tess's room right after the door slammed shut. "Was that really necessary? Slamming really?" He rolled his eyes and went to seat beside the Pizza stack. HE opened one up and raised an eyebrow before taking a few slices about a third of the pie out at once and biting into it. "Marshmallows? Kimi would never approve..." He laughed and continued to eat. "Delicious..." Gab sighed leaning back on the couch and kicking off his shoes.

Kimi glanced at the food brought by the new girl. "You don't have to eat that, we can order out..." She said and took out her cell phone. "Oh, I have to go. If we don't have a gig tonight I have to work." She kissed Demy’s forehead and took her card out of her back pocket slipping it into the girl's hand. "If anything happens call me. " She instructed. "When you find out when they are going to release him call me. And when you want anything call me." He patted the girl's shoulder then walked out. She was quick and within ten minutes all ready at work and busy making copies.

"Gab? What the hell?" I moved aside so I missed the swinging open of the door I had just slammed. It amazed me how he seemed to be talking to himself when I was standing right beside the pizzas. "Go mooch off of someone else who pitys you." I picked up the other 6 pies and dropped them inside of Tess' room before it occurred to me that this was the first time I'd seen Gab since I've been back, which made me wonder if he was even informed on my return.

The thought of looking at Trace had never occurred to Gab. To the boy, Trace was dead. It was a fact of life. He had left them and would never, ever come back. And so not once did he looked the older boy in the eyes or even look at him for that matter. He wolfed down the pizza in his hand and took another third out of the box; making quick work of that too. "I guess marshmallows aren’t bad... just weird." He said with a full mouth. Gab was in denial. When Trace had left it had jarred him both mentally and physically, he didn't eat at all in that first week. He was a wreak. Trace had been his father figure, and he was abandoned.

Hesitantly, I took a seat beside Gab. It never occurred to me that I could hurt him in the process of leaving as well. The only people I was really worried about were Kimi and Tess. "Hey, man. I didn't mean it like that. You can stay here if you want." No, those weren't the right words. Ugh. I had been too harsh on him before, but maybe that wasn't what made him ignore my presence. I turned so I faced him dead on. "Gab? Can you even hear me? I'm not imaginary, or anything if you think I am. I'm really here. If I hurt you..."
