The chest only holds the scimitar and the gold. (I don't believe Vaki said he pick them up.)
Inside most of the boxes are clothing, rope, patch kits for the sails, Rum, and salted food. But for two inside one is a makshift shrine with a symbol, a silver cup, candles and a rune covered knife. and the other has Shark skin armor. The net is a basic cargo net. (a net where they use rope instead of tread to make.)

(ah ha! If that's what I think it is.... what skill govern's a character's own class? If I'm not mistaken, that item is a binder's kit of stuff which boosts pact rolls. wouldn't she simply remember seeing it in a book?...er, hrm, maybe not...)
Vesper scans the the makeshift shrine, her eyes lighting up at the sight of something arcane; the symbol in particular catching her eyes.
".....this iz..."
Glancing up, she then grabs scraps of spare canvas and uses the rune knife to slice them into ragged strips, walking over to Drebin.
" Say, Changling-can you make these black and and ashy? Or need I burn them myself... This is yet another touch; a flaming ghost in dark robez is much scarier, right? My magic iz strong...fire of the natural kind can be pressed under my thumb."

Vesper shruggs, taking out the lantern she snatched before while walking over to the chest with the odd items; the knife, the cup, and candles.
She takes a moment to stare at them, sitting on the floor and blackening the rags with oil from the lantern, taking care to leave a bit in it so it can still be lit.
"hmmmm. Theze items, they are familiar...I Think."
[knowledge religion, +6, then.
Also, if the guy rolled a one, wouldn't a critical failure mean he trips and fall flat on his face where all can see? Or something like that? just a thought.]

Vesper knows that it is a binder's kit but the symbol is broken and you only possess a part. And from the way the items was set up the pirates was worshiping the broken symbol.
The person following is an ugly half-orc, he doesn't appear to be wearing any armor, but he is holding two hand axes and he is smiling. Noticing his cover has been blown, He charges at Vaki and Gren....
