"sir, yes sir"

A solitary figure crept among the bushes, avoiding the many serpentine figures that he was in the presence of. He had just taken a lighter off of a fallen soldier a few moments ago. He ripped off the guard and pushed the valve all the way open.

After he had operated on the lighter for a few seconds, he caught sight of a dead tree with a hole in the base. He gathered up some of the limbs strewn across the ground and placed them in the mouth of the hole and eased them in. After that, he pinned down the button on the lighter, tossed it in the pile of wood, and started screaming and waving. He could hear the snakes coming through the woods, speeding toward his location. He knew that they wouldn't last long.

When about fifty snakes had surrounded him, the fire finally erupted from within the dead tree, spreading from tree to tree, sending the snakes into a panicked frenzy. Xaes leapt through a gap in the flames and began running as the fire licked at his heels. The anguished cries of the snakes echoed through the forest.He almost wanted to stop and listen, but sense told him that he needed to move. He laughed as he neared the edge of the patch of woods on the hostile planet.

He wandered back to an abandoned human offensive installation and began searching through frequencies, trying to contact someone. The message was the same every time: "To any friendly forces that can hear me, this is Xaes, check my service file. I need evac A.S.A.P., please respond." He knew that coms had built-in homing beacons, so he wasn't worried about them finding him, just getting the message out. He'd been here for too long.

Xaes began laughing. "Yes, I am Xaes, what would your name be? I grow rather impatient and I'm pretty sure that opposing forces will be here inside of fifteen minutes, we must move. Fires don't just start up like that on this planet." A satisfied grin spread across his face as the stifling smell of burnt flesh spread toward them, becoming slowly more thick.

"Yes, and it would go much more smoothly if your weapon wasn't wedged between my shoulder blades. Please hurry, my arms are cramping and that smell is only going to get worse." Xaes began coughing, so he slowly reached down and pulled his shirt up to cover his nose.

"Hold on, let me grab my stuff. I had to leave everything but my close-quarters weaponry here. Bullets don't go well with heat." He was in and out of the installation in seconds, the only difference was that now he carried a large automatic rifle and a pair of pistols. "Let's be on our way, then."

"Not to be quick, but can I take gunner's seat? You never know what you're gonna run into. It would take some pressure off of you." He awaited an answer with a hopeful look on his face.

"That works for me!" Xaes climbed up, hit the latch, and climbed in. Everything was spotless. "You're more of a solo pilot, aren't you?"
