Codi felt relieved. Though in the back of her head she felt a pang of sadness and some anger, she was happy to know that she hadn’t died. Because that would’ve sucked.
However, she was still in this mansion…and there was that matter of the creepy voice of the little girl. Well, I mean, Codi already heard voices anyways—but just one, and at least this one was in her own head, and didn’t make things move in the outside world.
And yet, there was still something wrong. As Codi looked into Patrick’s eyes, giggling and blushing slightly at his hearty laugh, something made her feel decidedly unpleasant. Even Muse directed her attention towards him; combined, the two stared into Patrick’s deep pits, until suddenly Codi broke into a spontaneous shiver. Startled, she quickly turned her head to avoid his gaze.
”Did you—“
”Yeah,” Codi muttered, surprised at the way Muse’s voice shuddered, as if she were disturbed, ”Yeah, I did.”
There was a pause. ”…I don’t trust him,” said Muse, dodgy, ”Not at all, Codi. There’s something up here.”
”Really?” Codi chuckled; she left it at that, because she knew Muse was aware of what she was about to say. Well obviously there was something going on—was she not talking to a disembodied presence lurking deep within her subconscious? The others were more than likely thinking the same things about her, and with much more reason and proof.
But if there was one thing to be suspicious about, it was the girl. With a pang Codi felt another throb of sadness and anger, followed by a weak sniffle:

”Fine, be that way! You can all just starve for all I care!”
The feeling retreated, followed by a deep sigh of relief that Codi recognized as her own.
”Ah, she’s gone,” Muse declared triumphantly, ”Now, minion, give me soda.”
Codi rolled her eyes. Without another word (disregarding the questions the others may have asked her), she stumbled awkwardly from Patrick’s arms, getting her footing after a few steps on the slick tiles. Her bare feet left dusty footprints tracked all over the place; her pant legs, the bottoms soaked from spilled beverage, left sticky trails in her wake. Reminded, Codi hastily reached into her messenger bag for another soda and straw.
She was rather disappointed. So far she’d spilled two cans, both at least half full. What a waste, she sighed, popping open a can of Mountain Dew. Her sister would kill her, seeing as she was the one paying for her addiction.
Codi unexpectedly became reminiscent. How was Laura doing, anyways? How long had she been missing—was she worried, searching around the house, in the usual corners where Codi often hid away from the world? The sides of her mouth twitched around her fresh straw as she imagined the TVs flashing on, her face in the lower right corner with details about her disappearance, about how scared and depressed her older sister had become in her absence…
”Bah!” Muse laughed, making Codi jump a little, ”Stop being so fanciful. Laura knows how to keep a cool head. It’s too bad she’s the only one who cares about you that much, though.”
Codi knew she was lying, but she let it slide, instead replying a little dryly, ”Yeah, you’re probably right. We’ll get home soon enough.”
Meanwhile, somebody had appeared in the doorway. Codi found herself starting again at the sight of her, as she seemed to have appeared out of thin air. Instantly she recognized her, but she didn’t know where from.
”Genius, she’s the girl you tripped over in the basement,” quipped Muse, sounding bored already, though mellowed by the effects of caffeine.
Right. But before she could introduce herself, the girl’s presence had directed everyone’s attention to the hallway as the sound of scraping furniture echoed off the walls from behind the white, cobweb-covered door.
Codi tensed, looking around with wild eyes. She spoke to everyone now:
”There’s a chance that I might be wrong, but I have a feeling she’s angry.”

((Yeah, people can be nasty like that. I'll send it for you. ^^ ))

Vera snapped her head towards Codi when she heard her comment. "Who is 'she' ?" Vera asked sharply, her eyes narrowed. Was Codi referring to the noises she just heard? 'Angry' was a good word to describe the prescence. But... wasn't that her imagination? Or so she thought. She was now sharing the same hallucinations with Codi, the pyscho teenager speaking to herself? No, Vera would not accept the explantaion that she was going crazy, no way. Either she was going off the edge, or something very real was happening, something... supernatural.

Codi blinked, shifting her attention towards Vera. She opened her mouth to reply—
She stopped, shaking her head.
”Nothing,” Codi said finally, ”Just—nothing. Really. I guess.”
She had gone from defensive to quiet and dismissive all at once; straightening her back, jamming the straw in her mouth, Codi looked towards the ceiling.
”Why didn’t you tell her?”
Codi did not answer. Muse knew full well why; there was no point explaining what had just happened to her in the past few minutes. If they already thought she was crazy, then there would be no end to the taunting now. It was better just to keep her mouth shut than to blabber senselessly like she normally did—a trick that Laura had taught her at a young age. People tend not to inquire when you don’t talk.
”Aww, come on now,” Muse chided, annoyed, ”They have a right to know, don’t they? I mean, do you really think this will change things? They already think badly enough of you as it is—“
A noise. Codi tensed, refusing to blink even as droplets of water dripped into her sparkling green eyes. Her gaze slowly traveled towards Patrick and Rose’s pockets.
”—So the fact that you hear other things might actually help out, right? I mean, that kid must be really pissed. What if you just let them wander off wherever and she slits their throats?—“
”Quiet,” Codi muttered, agitated at Muse’s ramblings. She was distracting her from this other stimulus, one that only she seemed aware of.
Was…Rose’s pocket vibrating? It seemed only moments earlier that Patrick’s pocket was doing the same.
”Hey! Don’t ignore me!” Muse snapped; as if waving her arms in front of a TV screen, she suddenly brought herself to the forefront of Codi’s subconscious, blocking out most else. ”YOOOOOUWHOOOOO—“
”Cut it out!” she snapped, sharply but quietly, ”Now shut up and listen you freak.”
Silence. Rose’s pocket buzzed again, and Codi found herself cocking her head, taking a cautious step forward like a cat stalking a twitching piece of grass, not sure of what made it move but curious to figure out.
”Ooh. You’re right,” Muse leaned forward, as if getting more input in doing so, ”I wonder what it is? A timer, maybe?”
Or a cell phone, Codi thought with a wicked grin. Nearly face-to-pocket with Rose, she looked up with this interesting expression, similar to a child who’s just heard a dirty word for the first time and intends on using it soon after.
”…Whatcha got there?” she asked, head tilting in full innocence.

Rose blanched. The girl's hearing was too good. What was she going to do now? She was exposed, at least partly, and that was no good. What would Lukas do if he found out? A cold shiver ran up her spine at the thought. If they failed because of one girl's over-acute sense of hearing...
But what could she do? She couldn't pretend there was nothing there. They would know that she was hiding something. But she couldn't take the phone out of her pocket either. What if the girl read whatever Lukas had said? She could purposely be the klutz that was lurking inside, waiting to strike at the worst possible moment and drop the phone. It was small enough to shatter if it hit the floor from waist height. But then she wouldn't get any further instructions from Lukas and she didn't know who the other Saviors were.
Well, at least I can slow her down... Rose thought as she pressed the off key on the flat phone while she drew it out of her pocket.

((Thanks cheeta-katt. I seem to be more sensitive about these things than most people... Anyway, looks like things are getting quite interesting on their own. Now to sit back, and enjoy the posts...))

Darkness... Just Darkness...

With a start, Legault bolted upright in a cold sweat. He took his gloved hand to his forehead, wiping it clean quickly. Looking around him, he could see the darkness of the basement once again.

Damn, how long have I been out...? I'd best hurry, before it happens again...

The young man slowly pulled himself to his feet, brushing off his brown leather jacket and old jeans. The others were gone; he couldn't afford to stay in the basement, lest the darkness there oppress him into losing himself again. Ignoring the panging headache that wracked his skull, he trudged up the old, rotten steps of the basement staircase. The sound of his shoes and the creaking floorboards echoed into the basement, as if it was crying under his moderate weight.

Without much caution he pried open the trap door, squinting at the relative brightness of the main hall. This is empty too... This isn't right... With that, his eyes caught the many footprints in the dirt-covered floor, leading off into the bathroom.

Several minutes later, after examining his surroundings, he stepped into the pristine room behind his predecessors. He eyed the younger of the three curiously as she investigated the taller woman's pocket.

"Hello there." He paused in the doorway behind the woman, waiting for one of the three to reply.

Patrick shrugged when Codi removed herself from his arms. In fact, it was kind of useful since he need to get his phone out anyway. Like a flash, he whipped out his old, worn-out phone from his pocket and gazed down at it in one smooth movement. A non-chalant gaze was aimed at the small screen as he had to stop the crease that was beginning to build in his brow of annoyance. A silent sigh escaped him regardless and he pressed the button to clear out of the message screen to put the phone back. Looking up and glancing curiously toward Rose, he sighed almost frustradedly and spoke yet again with a tired voice. "Damn phone alarm. I thought I turned it off, but I guess not." Turning toward Rose and the newcomer, he cocked an eyebrow upward ever so slightly and inclined his head in greeting. "Patrick's the name. Pleasure to meet you."

[[SO SORRY. D: Hurricane Ike just pummeled us. We've been without power since Saturday and I've been at my dads house. There's power at my house but I currently have no way to get there. So I might not be on again for another few days, even a week. I'm at a Starbucks right now.]]

((Never apologize for inclement weather. We'll make do without you.))

Rose looked gratefully at Patrick as the newcomer's arrival made everybody turn their heads. She released the phone and withdrew the lighter again and started flicking it on and off. That's when she started to wonder: Why did he save her? Was he covering his own behind? It probably wasn't a good idea to trust him, but she would definitely keep an eye on him.
Rose returned her attention to the guy who had just appeared at the door.
"Hi. I'm Rose. Nice to meet you."

Codi blinked in confusion at the passing events. Inside her head, Muse bore a wide smile.
Things were heating up.
Hungrily she eyed Rose’s hand as it reached into her pocket, pulling out the buzzing something slowly and deliberately. In the meantime her head snapped up to Patrick, who had also withdrawn a cell phone, but was already in the process of putting it away. It seemed he had only glanced before quickly replacing it, yet Codi felt that in that small span of time he had done something else. His shady excuse was even more reason for suspicion—but then again, Patrick seemed reasonable enough…
”How can you even think of trusting him?” snapped Muse, annoyed and flustered, ”It’s obvious he’s lying, can’t you see?”
”No, I don’t think so,” Codi replied, backing away and turning to face the mirror (she ignored the newcomer for the time being, as she was engrossed in other matters), ”He’s been a trusting person so far. If they’ve been against us this entire time then they’ve been doing a good job of hiding their motives, don’t you agree?”
”But—but—“ Muse stammered, suddenly sounding frightened as she argued in a shrill whisper, ”Didn’t you feel it? That shiver? There’s no good to come out of this, Dakota, you mark my words—“
For Muse to use her real name was a signal for trouble. Codi raised an eyebrow, staring at her distorted reflection in the foggy glass as she placed her newly-opened soda on the nearby countertop; but she held onto her doubts with stubborn determination.
”I don’t think so…It could’ve just been the water. You know we’re cold-blooded.”
That was true. Neither Codi nor Muse could stand temperatures under seventy-five degrees without at least a light jacket.
Muse, however, was undeterred, and the way she refused to stray off the topic to other ravings made Codi second guess her trust in the two.
”Look, you know as well as I do that something weird is going on here,” she snarled in warning, ”And you know even better than myself that things like this can happen elsewhere. Remember when we met Dustin?”
The topic struck a chord, making Codi flinch and gnash her teeth. ”Don’t you dare—“
”Remember how you trusted him in the beginning?” Muse snickered, her confidence rising as she continued her ploy, ”And remember how, even though we both had some bad feelings about him, you still decided that he was a good guy? You do remember, right?”
”Now you listen good—“ Codi hissed, glaring venomously at her reflection like a cat cornered by a vacuum cleaner, ”—Dustin is a good guy. Just because he was uncertain in the beginning about where he stood—“
”It doesn’t matter,” Muse waved dismissively, ”He tried to kill you at least once, and you refused to believe me when I said you couldn’t trust him. You still can’t, can you Codi?”
”Shut up!” she snapped, and slammed her clenched fists onto the marble sink. At first Codi thought the resulting cracking sound was part of the rim breaking off, but the wave of pain that flew up her hand immediately after revised that idea. Letting out a silent wail of agony, her other hand shot up and grabbed the injured appendage as she stumbled backwards along the floor, biting her lip and mumbling under her breath as she cursed various people for her misfortune.
”Smartass,” Muse muttered matter-of-factly, and Codi shook her head violently to give the voice a good rattling about her subconscious.

((@ Lahren: D: Really, no need for apologies there at ALL. Thanks for letting me know beforehand.

Well, now to start on the 'work' that I've been pushing off to the side...

Edited later: I've made some changes in the front page, in case anyone wants to check them out.))

His eyes wandering back and forth, from Patrick, to Rose, and to the strange little girl, he couldn't help but feel a bit of suspicion. It seems that some very opportunistic people have used me as a distraction... Oh well, there's no proof here unless I see who sent them those messages. An alarm would have been ignored... Even moreso, the young girl, who seemed to be talking to herself in an almost reprimanding tone, caught a great deal of his attention. Not overt suspicion, just an odd curiosity, like when one simply comes across an odd phenomenon on their way.

"I'm Legault, and you are...?" He asks politely, turning to the younger girl and her soda. At the sudden outburst of anger, and pain, that followed, he simply set back and watched, although with a concerned expression. Best to see the results, rather than initiate himself too far... Detachment was most definately something not foreign to him.

Breaking himself from those thoughts, he realised that additionally, there was supposed to be a much larger crowd. Not to mention that only some very suspicious characters remained. Something is odd...

((Indeed, I was almost hit by a tree myself! No need for apologies, I almost lost my life for the same reason. ^^"))

[[Yeah, them storms can be killer. Ten deaths down here in Texas, I heard. v.v A shame. And thank y'all. I got dial-up now and I've gotten back to my house, but work is still gnawing at me so I should be able to get on a few times a day.]]

Patrick cocked an eyebrow and locked a concerned gaze onto Codi. Though her words caused the slightest twitch in that brow. She's doubting my motives? That's a shame. I really don't want anyone to get hurt. The slightest flicker of desperation of sorrow appeared in his eyes but vanished in the same instant. Whatever it takes, I'll get her back. When she fell to the floor, his eyebrows knitted together to form a worried crease in the space between his eyebrows. Immediately, he dropped to one knee next to her and held her up with one arm whilst the other darted out to gingerly cradle her injured hand. "You should be more careful." His tone was soft and gentle; obviously concerned. I do hope no one has to get hurt for whatever Lukas wants. But if that's what it takes, than so be it.

Logic was flying through Legault's head...

With a surprised look on his face, he suddenly placed a hand on his phone; apparently it had vibrated. Using Codi's injury as an opportunity, he pulled it out very casually so he could read it without suspicion; there was no way he could know who was working for him. Regardless of how quickly or slyly he pulled out the phone, there is no way he could not be seen; thus, he chose to do it in plain sight, under the guise of being casual so he would not arouse suspicion. After reading the contents of the phone, he placed it back in his pocket, clinking as it hit his useless change within.

Mentally throwing the matter of the phone aside, he rushed over to Codi and Patrick's side, placing a hand on the man's shoulder as his hazel eyes examined Codi's injury. He bent over, delicately drawing a gloved finger over the injury, with the slightest touch.

"We're in a bathroom, there should be cold water... We can use that to numb the pain." He said, hoping to contribute to the strange little girl's aid with somewhat of a commanding, yet gentle, aura.

Rose's first thought when she realized what had happened to the other girl was a little bit of Schadenfreude; Serves her right... Then, mentally, she slapped herself. What was she thinking, thinking things like that? Rose was not a cold, heartless person...she hoped. But then, maybe that's why drama came so easily to her. Maybe she was just an empty shell that was very good at mimicking emotions in a performance. The thought horrified her, and she shut her eyes and shook her head to clear the thought from it.
Forcing herself back to the situation at hand, her eyes narrowed as Legault checked a message on a phone of his own. Now what in the world...? But, fearful that her calling him out would result in a situation much like the one he had walked into the middle of, she hurried to repeat Vera's actions from earlier and wet a towel with cold water for the younger girl's hand. She just had another person to keep a close eye on, that's all...
