Kokoroki Eccentric Iconoclast Happy-Kindness I know that it has already been mentioned, but Japanese-online.com is a very good website... And I love their semi-new look! I am not sure if anyone has mentioned this, but Pimlseur language programs are one of the best ways to learn the beginning of a language! Pimsleur is the best because all you need to do is listen and respond. No memorizing or quizes. Though in order to more fully understand a language you'll need to memorize tons of random vocabulary that Pimsleur doesn't teach you.I don't like Pimsleur, actually. >.< it only taught me how to speak 2 sentences and thats it Well, that is the only thing about the Pimsleur program, Pimsleur's language programs are distributed and partly controlled by Simon and Schuster Inc. And Simon and Schuster Inc. only focus on getting money, not helping people learn. So you will mainly see packs of only 5 10 or 20 lessons. Pimsleur can only be atruly effective main source of language learning if you by the comprehensive sets. They have li,ke 90 lessons in all. And the things about Pimsleur is that you like never forget anything and you don't need to attempt to memorize or do drills or quizzez. 3nodding *rants more*

I once tried out a Pimsleur Japanese course.... complete garbage. If you haven't bought it yet, don't bother wasting your money on it.
1 - Not nearly enough grammar is explained. Past the age of 10, rare are cases where somebody can learn to speak a language well without have a good understanding of the grammar.
2 - How are you supposed to know how to write stuff? Speaking a language is nice, but you need to be able to read and write in it too...

Speaking a language is nice, but you need to be able to read and write in it too... I've yet to find any good Japanese programs for learning other than a classroom. The only thing I like abuot Pimsleur is that it's good practice to run through speaking it, because the Japanese Language is so different in pronunciation its nice to be able to practice it and be able to compare my vocalization. And my advice to anyone learning Japanese, be very careful about your pronunciation of things. But you need a basic run down of what things are suppose to sound like in Japanese this only teaches you to regurgitate words. My Japanese textbook is really good, I'll post info about it once I get home in two weeks. I already knew how to read it, write it, and speak it before buying the Pimsleur cds. The only reason I ended up buying them is because compared to everything else they were the best thing for putting into my car and practicing while I was driving.

Eccentric Iconoclast It's like a puzzle. It's the same reason a lot of people like sudoku or crosswords. heart But it's an infinite puzzle, that can never be completely known... I love you for saying this. I adore japanese grammar simply because it's so alien to any of the other languages I've learned, and it's a challenge for me to decipher it.
I tend to drive my class insane with my addiction to Kanji as well. Every new word I learn I look up the kanji for, and practice until I have it memorised. I just really like how beautiful they look on paper, and memorisation is something I can do almost naturally but is still pretty fun for me. ^^

what I found helpful is the instant immersion series (Cds, computer programs, workbooks) the computer series really helped with me with japanese very recommended
also recommended : the learn in your car series which conveniently comes with a pamplet and cds and as a bonus the pamplet: Secrets of learning a foreign language by Graham Fuller, and cds following it.
