"Alright Squirtle nice job!" Now that the battle was over, Lola didn't have to hid her fear and worry of losing. Squirtle too took a sigh of relief and showed that he took a decent amount of damage. Lola ran over and shook Robert's hand, "you did a really nice job. I just kinda played everything by ear and hoped for the best." Lola laughed. Vivian chimed in, "And we have our winner! Lola from Pewter City has won the contest today. Let's give her a round of applause as we hand her the ribbon." Lola graciously accepted the ribbon from Vivian and pinned it to her Squirtle. "Thanks, buddy," Lola said, smiling up at the crowd.

Robert left the stage and headed for the pokemon center to bring Julia back to health. As he entered in, however, he saw his grandmother standing there with a smile on her face. "Well, I must say I am impressed Robert. You've taken down two gym leaders and came in second place in your very first contest. I certainly hope your defeat has drained you of your fighting spirit." She spoke with a coy grin at the last part. Robert chuckled a bit and shook his head. "Not at all. It just showed me what I need to improve on, that's all. Julia has alot of potential. Well, all of my pokemon do. Now I need to find some counters to moves like protect and mirror coat." Robert spoke. "That's my boy. Learn from your mistakes and press on. Defeat is certain for all trainers at one point in time or another. The weak give up or take it out on thier pokemon. The strong press on and learn to overcome thier own personal weaknesses. but I don't need to lecture you on things you already know." She spoke before handing Robert a fishing rod cupon and heading towards the door. "I think you'll find fishing can be quite relaxing. A perfect way to calm your nerves and clear your mind. You might even catch a new friend or two." she spoke on her way out.
Robert smiled before then giving Joy his pokeball. With the cupon in hand, he didn't have to worry about foraging for his own food. However, foraging was still a good way to get berries for pokeblock and pokemon food. heading over to the fishing shop, Robert used the cupon to get a good rod and a few lures. Although he wanted a super rod, the cupon was for a good rod, and he wasn't going to let a gift from his grandmother go to waste. After a trip for supplies at the pokemart, Robert returned to the pokemon center. Knowing that he would try ad catch at least one new friend, he needed to send one of his pokemon to the ranch. Bringing out his pokemon, he looked all of them. "I need to have one of you guys check in on Light and Krystal at the ranch. Who wants to volunteer?" he asked. Julia stepped forward, looking a little down. Although Robert didn't take defeat hard, it seemed Julia did. "Julia, listen to me. You did your best, and I'm proud of you for that. Agianst any other opponent, you would have tore them up. We were caught off guard by Protect and Mirror Coat. But that's no more your fault than it is mine. All we can do is try harder and become better. Now you cheer up. You're too pretty to be sad." he spoke with a coy tone of voice. Julia blushed some and gave a nod, smiling slightly. "That's better. Now, are you still sure you want to go to the ranch until I ned to call on you agian?" Julia gave a nod to Robert before giving a hug. "Alright then. Julia return." Robert spoke before putting Julia back into her pokeball and sending her to the pokemon ranch for some much needed R&R.
With that done, he headed out towards Vermillion City.

Jake waited for Lola as she healed her pokemon at the pokecenter. Once Nurse Joy handed Lola her pokeballs, she turned to Jake with a nervous look on her face. "What's the matter Lola? You just won your first contest." Lola nodded and looked Jake in the eye, "Yeah I did, and I'm really proud for that. But after talking to my sister earlier today, she can really use some help at her home for a while." Jake listened and then spoke, "Then go help her out." He gave Lola a reeassuring smile. "For real? You won't be mad if I just leave you to go to Mahogany Town?" Jake shook his head, "No not at all. What we have is friendship, and family always comes first. We can keep in touch, it will all be fine." Lola took a sigh of relief, "Okay, I'll only be there for a little while though, her boyfriend walked out and she needs an extra hand while she puts herself back together." Jake nodded. "Alright then, there is a train I can catch and ride to Goldenrod down in Saffron City. Here's my sister's number. Call when you get to Vermillion, kay?" Jake nodded and put the phone number in his pocket. He then hugged Lola goodbye and she headed to Saffron City.
Jake sent out Charmeleon before heading over to Bill's house. He didn't particularily like traveling with no one by his side, and he knew that as long as he was a good trainer, he was never alone. Jake knocked on the door to Bill's house and was greeted by Professor Bill, "Hello, I'm Bill! Any way I can help you?" Jake nodded, "I'm Jake...from Pallet Town. I was wondering if you could help me set up my pokedex to Professor Oak's lab." "Oh sure, that's easy. Just give me your pokedex and I'll contact Oak for ya." Jake handed Bill his pokedex. Bill then plugged it into the computer and contacted Oak via video phone. "Oh hello Bill, how are you?" Professor Oak asked. Bill responded with a smile, "I'm fine, I've got a trainer here named Jake." Jake walked over and greeted Professor Oak. After a few minutes of chit chat and catching up, Jake asked if he could send a pokemon over to Oak. "Oh sure, just place the pokeball in the machine over there and Bill will show you what button to press." Jake sent out his Beedrill and gave him a temporary goodbye. After returning Beedrill, he placed the pokeball in the slot. Bill then pushed a rectangular button that said "TRANSFER". Beedrill was sent over to Professor Oak. "Okay then, I've been anxious to see this Beedrill in person. Alright then, I'll talk to you later Jake." Jake and Bill said goodbye to Oak.
"So, where are ya headed next?" Bill asked as he sat in a chair. "Umm, I'm on my way to Vermillion City for the S.S. Anne cruise and my next gym battle," Jake said, still proud of his cascade badge. "Ahh, Surge is a tough gym leader. But the cruise should be great training for you." Jake replied, "Yeah, I'm a bit nervous for that battle. But I'm going to give it my all and I'm not going to back down." Bill then got up and walked to an incubater in the room, which housed several pokemon eggs, "Well here, take this," Bill handed Jake a round dark blue egg with two yellow diamonds on it, "My sister gave me a bunch of these pokemon eggs last time I visited her. She got 'em at the pokemon day care. There's no way I can raise all these pokemon so really, you're doing me a favor." Jake Held the egg close to him and rubbed its shell, "Thanks very much Bill. I appreciate it a lot." Bill smiled, "Well, you should probably get going now if you want to get to Vermillion by the end of the day." Jake left Bill's house and walked back to Cerulean City, with Charmeleon at his side.
At Cerulean, Jake stopped at the pokemart and bought a silk cloth and some rubbing alcohol for his egg. He then got a sandwhich to go from the pokecenter and began to walk towards Vermillion, polishing his egg as he travelled.

Robert headed south, getting himself into a few scraps with some budding trainers who were trying to toughen up to battle Misty, while others simply wanted a battle for the fun of it. After what seemed like several hours, Robert and his pokemon came to a gateway building that connected Cerulean to Saffron City. But due to some sort of construction, the pathway was closed. "Great, now how am I going to get to Vermillion City." Robert scowled. Looking around, he finally found a sign that read 'Detour: Underground Pasage' Looking over to his right he saw a small house with a door wide open. Inside was a stairwell that connected to a rather long tunnel. It took a good two hours of walking to get through the tunnel and to the other side, which opened up into a long grassland with a few lakes. Robert's feet were starting to get sore from all of the walking around, and it was getting close to supper time. "Well, I think I'll take it easy for a while and just set up camp. The cruise isn't until tomarrow, and we should be able to make it there with time to spare." Robert spoke to his pokemon before bringing everyone out of thier pokeballs to help set up the tent. After a hardy dinner, Robert pulled out the fishing rod he had gotten and attached a Misty lure. As the rest of his pokemon rested, Lilly walked over to Robert and wrapped her arms around him from behind. "Is something on your mind Lilly?" Robert asked. Master, am I pretty too? Robert blinked a bit at the question. It was probably because he had called Julia pretty before. "Of course you are Lilly. You're quite beautiful." Robert replied before reaching back and patting her on the head. Lilly smiled and hugged him tightly. "...Lilly..." Robert mutterd. Yes? she replied. "I...can't breathe...." Lilly gasped before releasing the hug quickly, realising she was tightly hugging his neck. I'm sorry master, I... Robert placed a finger on her small mouth. "It's alright. Just relax Lilly. I love you and all of my pokemon. You should know I'm not going to play favorites. There's no way I could since you are all such wonderful friends. Even those who are back at the ranch. And trust me when I say this, everyone will have thier chance to visit the ranch and my parents, and I don't intend on keeping anyone there for an extended period of time." Lilly smiled and sat beside him, resting agianst him while Lotus and Farrah playfully romped around. Sable kept guard watch over the encampment.
Robert fished for about half an hour before he got a really strong bite. RObert's line was going all over the place as he wrestled with the unknown fish. "Wow, this one's a fighter, that's for sure." Robert stood and wrangled with the fishing rod until finally he yanked out the fish onto dry land. Much to his surprise, the fish he had just pulled out was nothing more than a magikarp. However, where most trainers would have thrown it back, Robert saw the Magikarp's fighting spirit. This wasn't the ordinary crap karp that people made so many jokes about. This one had spirit. It lept in a tackle attack at Lilly, only to fall short and splash on the ground, trying to get back to the water where it could make either a better tackle attempt or get away. "Lilly, confusion! We're not litting this one get away." Robert spoke. Lilly nailed Magikarp with a confusion attack leaving it near fainted, but even with low health, it still seemed ready to fight. Taking out a pokeball, Robert hit Magikarp with it, causing the red light to swallow it up. The ball rocked back and forth for almost a full two minutes before finally sealing closed. "Wow, that's some fighter. Who would have thought a magikarp could be so determined? But that's exactly the kind of spirit I want to join this team." Robert spoke before picking the pokeball up. Magikarp, the fish pokemon. It is said to be the world's weakest pokemon. No one knows how it has managed to survive Robert smirked a bit. he knew Magikarps were weak. Even one with as much spirit as the one he caught wouldn't even be a match for his newborn Lotus. But Robert knew better. The weakest pokemon in the world also had the potential to become among the most powerful: Gyarados. Robert remembered how strong Lance's Gyarados was when he got the chance to watch Lance battle. Although not dragon typed, a Gyarados was usually considered to be a dragon. Looking at his pokedex, he couls see it was a male with the Swift Swim ability and knew Splash and Tackle. "Alright Hogan, welcome to the team. And don't worry my friend, I'll train you to become the strongest Gyarados anyone has ever seen." he spoke before attaching his new friend to his belt.

As Jake and Charmeleon walked downwards from Cerulean City, Jake began to think, leaving Charmeleon bored with his quiet trainer. Jake looked down and noticed Charmeleon was losing his patience, "Oh sorry buddy, I'm thinking of new strategies to improve our team. Here I'll send Jin out to keep you company." Jin was the pokemon Charmeleon got along most with out of everyone on the team. Jin was calm and focused, while Charmeleon was rash and focused. Though there personallities were opposites, their love for battling had caused them to become close. Jake kept walking, with Jin and Charmeleon speaking to each other in pokemon language. Jake smiled and kept thinking.
Hmm. Charmeleon's smokescreen is useful...but it can easily be countered. Maybe I should use it more as an escape attack rather than to shroud the field with it. If a pokemon is about to hit Charmeleon with a physical attack, he could blow a cloud of smoke. When the pokemon strikes, Charmeleon won't be there, and instead will be in another location. It would take a lot of speed though so me and Charmeleon are going to have to work on that. I'm pretty satisfied with metal claw, dragon rage, and fire spin though. However, fire fang could be a useful attack to learn. Just to add a bit of physical fire to the moveset.
Gloom...ingrain is a nice move, but like aqua ring, it can be cancelled out by burn. Maybe I can work on focusing Gloom's healing energy on a synthesis attack. So she can still heal, just not after every turn. Also, if I teach her sunny day, synthesis will heal a lot more health than usual. Sunny day would also power up her grass type moves and if she knew solar beam, it wouldn't have to charge. Solar beam is a tough attack though, and I don't think Gloom is ready to learn it. And her acid attack is getting kinda weak. Maybe I can upgrade it to sludge bomb. Yeah, Gloom will be good.
Candra. Her supersonic is very useful, but it has its flaw...it misses a lot. If I could work on teaching her confuse ray, it will have an increased chance of hitting. It would be a lot better for battles than supersonic. Poison fang is about the best poison attack I can get for Candra at this stage, which I'm happy with. Its a strong attack, I just need to use it more often. Maybe I could work on one of those combinations like Robert and Lola do. Use poison fang, pick the pokemon up in the air, throw them to the ground, and strike with air slash. It would be good, but Candra will have to be a little stronger for that. Wing attack...I can work on upgrading that to brave bird. But I would have to wait until Candra was a Crobat.
Jin...at first she proved to be very strong...but her hypnosis isn't so useful anymore. Pokemon can avoid it just by closing their eyes. But Misty's politoed's hypnosis took the form of sound waves. So if I could improve Jin's hypnosis in that manner, it would be more useful. Water gun...its a pretty good attack as of right now. But upgrading it to a water pulse in the near future wouldn't hurt either. Double slap...that attack is pretty much an average one. When she evolves into a Poliwhirl, maybe I could work extra hard and teach her Ice Punch. It would give me an advantage over grass and flying types. I could use that advantage...big time. Mud shot...I'm satisfied with this attack as it is. But when I think about it, Poliwag could really use a fighting attack. I was thinking brick break, after seeing that Machop use it, I've really grown to like it. Let me check the dex. Oh, wakeup slap. Its power is doubled if the foe is asleep. That sounds a lot better than brick break. So Poliwag could use hypnosis and then follow up with a wakeup slap. It would awaken the foe, but deal some serious damage. I'm liking the sound of that.
Hmm...I wonder what's going to hatch from this egg.
Jake snapped back to the real world after a long period of zoning out. It was now night time and Charmeleon and Poliwag were beginning to look a little bored. Jake looked at the nearest sign, "Vermillion City just ahead." Jake yawned, "Oh, did we go through that detour I had heard about?" Charmeleon and Poliwag nodded. Jake laughed, "Sorry for zoning out like that. I was planning new battle strategies. Let's camp here for the night."
Jake sent out his pokemon and they quickly set up a camp fire. Jake pulled out some pokemon food and a bag of peanuts to eat himself, "There will be plenty of food on the cruise tomorrow. Let's eat light tonight." Jake and his pokemon finished their meals. "How about some training, huh?" The team all cheered, eager to improve. Jake spoke, polishing his egg at the same time, "Charmeleon we'll start with you. I want to work on using your smokescreen as a quick evasive maneuver rather than use it to affect the field. So I'm going to come at you and you're going to blow a small but decent sized cloud of smoke, hiding you. You will then quickly escape from the cloud and go to any side of me. I will swing at you and miss, then you will either strike me with a physical or special attack." Jake dove lightly towards Charmeleon, he blew a cloud of smoke of the perfect size, but wasn't quick enough to get out of there. Jake grabbed Charmeleon and laughed, "its okay, we'll get it down." After about 20 minutes of trying, Charmeleon finished improving his attack."
Jake then turned towards Gloom, "Alright gloom, I want to work on teaching you synthesis. There isn't much I can do to help you with this attack, but give you advice. Just focus your energy in the same fashion you do when you use ingrain and somewhat for mega drain. Just try and try again till you get the attack down." Gloom nodded and began to practice. Jake then turned to Poliwag, "Poliwag, I want to make it so your hypnosis attack utilizes sound rather than sight. So you will spin your belly, but try and cause the spiral motion to send sound waves, putting your opponent to sleep. For now, just use hypnosis on that tree until you get the sound part down." Poliwag began to use hypnosis on the tree. Jake polished his egg as he watched Poliwag and Gloom practice learning their new attacks. After about a half hour, Poliwag mastered her new sound hypnosis.
"Nice job Jin', now we want to learn wakeup slap." Jin began to feel a little exhausted. You want to take a break and finish this tomorrow?" Jake asked, concerned for Jin's health. Jin shook her head no. "Okay then, wakeup slap is a fighting attack that does double the damage if your opponent is asleep, however, it instantly awakens them. So how you would use wakeup slap is by pounding me with your tail, much like double slap but with a lot more force. Start off by putting me to sleep so we can know when you have the attack down." Jake wasn't afraid of having his pokemon attack him, he trusted them and knew it was for their benefit. After about three rounds of hypnosis and wakeup slap attempts, Jake got a little tired and called it a night. "Gloom, Poliwag, we'll finish those attacks in the morning. The two pokemon nodded and they all went to bed.

The next day, Robert rose with the morning sun. With the help of his pokemon, he packed away his gear and cleaned up the campsite. After some breakfast, Robert brought out Hogan and got himself into his swimming trunks. Trying to raise Magikarp by battle was just karp suicide, but there were other ways to train and make it stronger. "Mathias, grab onto my waist. Hogan, I want you to pull me around this lake three times. Let's go!" Robert said. Mathias held onto robert's waist, keeping himself afloat in the water while Hogan began to swim with all of his might. After about an hour, Hogan had completed the task, and mathias was near fainted from water exposure. Takling Mathias out of the water, Robert administered a potion and a sitrus berry to Mathias to recover his health and vitality, and gave Hogan an oran berry. "You feeling ok Mathias?" Robert asked. Mathias gave a nod. After recalling Hogan to his pokeball, Robert took out the massage oil and gave a thorough massage to Mathias. "There, that should make you feel even better." He spoke before taking out Mathias's pokeball and recalling him. after then setting all of the cups up, Robert trained his pokemon on not only accuracy, but attacking multiple areas. Then, using Sable and Lilly, Robert worked hard on having Lilly master using confusion to send attacks back at the attacker. It would take a good two hours before Lilly had finally gotten it right. With training complete, it was time to head to Vermillion City and the S.S. Anne.
Once in Vermillion, Robert went over to the pokemon center to give his pokemon some R&R as well as to buy a ticket for the cruise. It would be about two hours before the boat was schedualed to leave, so after recieving his pokemon back, Robert decided to take a walk around the city.
As he did so, he came across a beauty palor for pokemon. Upon walking in, Robert was greeted by Suzie, Zane and Brock. "Oh, hey Robert. Good to see you." Brock spoke with a wave. "Robert smiled and returned the wave. "Hey Brock. What brings you here?" Robert asked. "Well, Suzie and I are good friends. I came to visit her and Vulpix. Plus I got a ticket for the cruise. After all, with all of the hot women cruises usually attract...." Robert gave a sigh and shook his head. Some things never change he thought. "So anyway, I take it you're here for the cruise as well?" Brock asked. "Yup. I came to stop in here to see what services it offers pokemon." Robert spoke.
"Well, our specialty is pokemon massages and grooming. We can have your pokemon both feeling and looking thier best. And any friend of Brock's is a friend of ours." Suzie spoke. Robert smiled and brought out all of his pokemon, with the exception of Hogan, since there seemed to be no water around inside the palour. "You have six pokemon, why not bring your sixth one out?" Brock asked. "Well, there's not water tank around here, so if I bring Hogan out, he's just going to splash around on the floor." Zane headed back to the storage room and brought out a fish tank, then filled it up with water. "Alright, there you go." Zane spoke. "Ok thanks. Come on out Hogan." Robert spoke, calling out his Magikarp.
"Wow, this Vulpix is in very good condition, and it has a beautifully unique natural coloring. I've never seen a shiny Vulpix before." Suzie said as she knelt down before Farrah. Her own Vulpix along with Zane's Nintales came out to greet Farrah. "I'm surprised you went with Magikarp. Very few trainers ever even bother since it takes alot to make it evolve." Brock replied. Robert gave a nod to Brock. "Yes, however the end result is worth all of the hard work. After I saw how much spirit this guy has, there was no way I'd let this one get away. If anything, he's going to make for a very powerful Gyarados when he evolves. He already knows tackle, so that means he's not too far away from that landmark. By the way, who's tending the gym?" Robert asked. "My father Flint is, plus Forrest is getting in practice so that he can become a gym leader when he gets older. My father lets him handle some of the gym battles. He's already good, but he still has quite a ways to go."
After a good hour and a half, all six of Robert's pokemon were rested, relaxed and looking beautiful. Even Hogan's scales had a very polished look to them. Sable ran up Robert and sat on his shoulder, while Farrah and Lotus played around with Zane's Ninetales and Suzie's Vulpix. Then Ash came into the shop. "Hey Brock, Robert!" Ash called to the duo. "Ash, Good to see you agian." Robert spoke. "So did you get your ticket Ash?" Brock asked. "Of course! A pokemon tournament and two contests, it's a great way to train. Plus I saw May and Dawn at the pokemon center, and Misty should be on her way as well." Brock laughed lightly. "Well, sounds like the gang's all here. What about Max?" Ash shook his head. "Nope. Max is back in Hoenn on his own pokemon journey." Robert blinked a bit at those names. "Wait a minute, you mean May and Max, the two kids of gym leader Norman?" Robert asked. Ash gave a nod. "You know them too?" Ash asked. Robert gave a nod. "Yeah, I know them. Thier family usually comes around once a year to help out during the yearly adoption drives down at my parents' pokemon orphanage. Though it's been a few years since I've seen May and Max. It'll be good to at least meet up with May and see how she's doing. She's already super popular back in Hoenn as a coordinater." Robert replied.
"Well then, let's not keep everyone waiting. They should be letting passengers on the boat soon." Brock spoke. After waving farewell to Suzie and Zane and Robert recalling his pokemon, Robert and company headed for the S.S Anne. However, as the boarded, Robert spotted someone from the corner of his eyes. That b*****d's here too? Robert thought as he looked over, only to find the guy he saw gone. "What's wrong?" Ash asked. "Kira's here." Robert replied in a serious tone of voice. "Looks like we're going to have to watch outr backs." Ash gave a nod. "Don't worry, if he causes trouble with us, you know there's no way he could win." Ash replied. Brock looked a little puzzled. "Rival?" he asked. Robert shook his head. "Just think of him as being like a Team Rocket thug, only worse. uses pokemon like tools, and if he deems them worthless, he thinks nothing of not only abandoning them, but also has his other pokemon beat them within an inch of thier life. He also has his pokemon attack the trainers themselves." Brock's face turned disgusted. "Wow. that's one horrible person. Someone like that doesn't even deserve to be called a trainer."
"Well, let's get our rooms for the trip." Robert spoke up. The three of them nodded and seperated, each heading to the rooms assigned on thier tickets. As Robert made his way to his Room, he saw May leaning agianst the railing, looking out at the sea with her Blaziken. "May, how've you been?" Robert asked. May turned around and almost fell down with surprise. "Robert? Wow, it's been a long time! I didn't know you were in Kanto." She replied. "Yeah, I decided to start my pokemon journey here in Kanto. Already got two badges, and once I'm done with the cruise, I'll be heading to the gym here for my third." may gave a nod before looking at Robert's Kirlia. "Wow, you're Kirlia's really cute, Just like Max's." Robret smiled. "So Max has a Kirlia as well? Did he get it from my parents?" Robert asked. May shook her head. "Nope. Back before Max became a trainer, he helped save a sick Ralts, but he had to release it to its family. But Max and Ralts promised each other they'd meet agian, and once Max got his first pokemon, he went straight back to the forest where he met Ralts and finally captured it." Robert smiled as he rested his back agianst the railing. "Sounds like quite an adventure. So I take it you're going to be competing in the contests on the boat here as well?" Robert asked. May shook her head. "I already have five ribbons for the Grand Festival here. I came here to watch all of the trainers and maybe get some new ideas for my own pokemon." She replied. Suddenly, her Glaceon came out of its pokeball and walked up to Robert, sniffing at one of his pokeballs. "Glaceon, I never said to come out." may spoke. Robert noticed which pokeball it was sniffing at and smiled. "Glaceon probably just wants to meet my Eevee. Lotus, come on out and play." Robert spoke, releasing his Eevee from her pokeball. "Oh, you're Eevee is so beautiful! Then agian, you've always been working with pokemon, so it's no surprise your Eevee is in such great condition." May replied before petting Lotus on the head. "Thanks. Your Glaceon is really gorgeous too. I tak eit you must have made a trip to Sinnoh." May gave a nod to Robert. "Yup. I wasn't going there with the intent of evolving Eevee, but while we were out and caught up in a blizzard, my Eevee evolved and helped lead me out of the storm. But what about you? Are you entering the contests?" May asked. Robert gave a nod. "Yes. I already entered the one in Cerulean and made it to the final round, but I ended up losing in the end. So I figured I might be able to score at least one ribbon here if I'm good enough. And even if I don't, I'l still walk away with plenty of experience." May smiled before she started heading towards her room, which was right next to his own. "Well, I need to finish unpacking my stuff. I'll probably bump into you sooner or later." Robert gave a nod to her before heading towards his room. "Sounds good. I gotta put my stuff away before it brakes my back." Robert jested before entering into his room.

Jake woke up the next morning to see that Gloom was already up and practicing her synthesis. "Wow, you're really determined," Jake said, sitting next to her. Gloom smiled, letting drool drip to the ground. Jake laughed and sat, cheering her on as she practiced. After about 10 minutes, she finally mastered her synthesis attack. Jake then stood up and looked at his watch, "Well the cruise starts in 3 hours. So we still have a decent amount of free time. I'm going to wake up Jin so she can work some more on her wakeup slap" Jake woke up Jin and they continued to practice her wakeups slap. After another hour and a half, Jin finally mastered it. Jake smiled, proud of all his pokemon for the training they had just done. Jake and his pokemon then walked to the pokecenter and bought their tickets and then boarded the S.S. Anne, finding their room with the party beginning in 20 minutes. Jake and his pokemon decided to just wait in their room for the boat to leave.

While waiting for the boat to leave, Robert went over a routine with his Eevee, planning on using her in one of the opening round of the first contest. Once the boat had started on its voyage and Robert was satisfied with how everything looked with Lotus's performance, Robert put Lotus away in her pokeball, leaving only LIlly and Sable out, and made his way to the dinning hall for the party.

The speakers in Jake's room clicked on and a man's voice rang in the room, "Good morning passengers and welcome to the S.S. Anne's 5 day cruise. Before we get started, let's give a warm round of applause for the pokemon fan club for planning this cruise for us," Jake could here everyone on the ship clapping as Jake clapped as well, "Feel free to just lounge on the ship today or take the time to meet some other trainers. Be sure to stop by the front deck sometime to register for the pokemon contests. If you would like to attend the welcome dinner, just be in the dining hall by 6. Have a good time!"
After listening to the announcement, Jake returned all his pokemon but Charmeleon and made his way to the front deck. "Okay Charmeleon, I was thinking we could enter the battling tournament and the contest on the cruise' last day." Charmeleon nodded, showing excitement for the battling tournament. Jake finally reached the front deck and waited in line to register. After about 20 minutes of waiting, Jake reached a Nurse Joy, "Hello, which events would you be interested in entering?" Jake replied, "We are interested in entering the battling tournament and the second contest. The name is Jake." Nurse Joy wrote Jake's name twice, once on each sheet of paper-with the exception of the paper designated to the first contest-, "Alright then, you're all registered. Have fun!" Jake nodded and walked off. Jake and Charmeleon walked to the back deck to find that it was full of trainers conversing and battling.
After talking to a few trainers, Jake's attention was turned to a man with brown hair yelling at his pokemon, "You're doing it all wrong Cross! Come on, step it up or else I'll release you straight into the water!" The pokemon became teary eyed and attempted the attack again. Jake held up his pokedex as the trainer kept yelling at his pokemon, "Scyther, the mantis pokemon. It is nearly impossible to parry its attacking scythes. Its movements are like a ninja's." Jake became angry at the trainer for he saw nothing wrong with the Scyther. Not being able to watch the poor pokemon, Jake approached the trainer, "Hey! You can't treat your pokemon like that!" A few trainers in the perimeter stopped to watch the scene. The trainer turned towards Jake, "Oh yeah? You think you could raise this Scyther better?" Jake nodded with a scowl on his face, "Yeah I could. Your Scyther is perfectly fine. When a pokemon can't learn an attack, you cheer it on, not pressure it!" The trainer turned red in the face with anger, "Oh yeah? Name's Scott by the way." Jake replied, "Yeah, how about we battle, for your Scyther! And my name's Jake." Scott laughed, "Alright, my Scyther against your Charmeleon. I win, I keep Scyther and get your Charmeleon. You win, you keep Charmeleon and keep Scyther." Jake bent over and talked to Charmeleon about the situation. They decided that Charmeleon would be able to pull through and handle Scyther. And they were both willing to risk it to rescue Scyther from such a cruel trainer. "Alright," Jake said, "deal."

Robert made his way to where Nurse Joy was. "Welcome. What events would you like to sign up for?" she asked. "Sign me up for all three, the two contests and the battle tournament." Looking at the rules, the first conest was a bit unusual. you were allowed two pokemon, but both were to be used in both rounds. The second contest was the usual type.
After registering, Robert went to the deck. There was a large swimming pool. In the water were several trainers swimming and enjoying themselves with thier pokemon. After stripping to his swimming trunks, Robert entered into the pool and brought Hogan out. Lilly even joined in by slipping her feet into the water, sitting herself at the edge of the pool. Robert was approached by May with her Glaceon swimming alongside her. "Wow, so you're actually raising a Magikarp. not many trainers have the patience to raise one of those." Robert smiled and gave a nod, resting agianst the wall of the pool, his elbows resting on the pool edge. "Yeah. Well when I saw how much spirit he had, there was no way I was going tolet this guy escape. It two two whole minutes inside the pokeball trying to get out before he was finally captured. It even knows tackle, which means it's not too far away." Robert spoke. Lilly jumped into the pool and held onto Hogan. Hogan swam around, carrying the little Kirlia on top of it. "He's no slouch, that's for sure. He pulled me and Mathias around the lake that I caught him in three times before becomming exhausted, and it was a pretty decent sized lake. Looking over, he could see Jake and another trainer about to battle. "Looks like Jake's about to get in a fight." He muttered. "Friend of yours?" may asked. Robert shrugged. "He is, but he's also a rival." Robert spoke. "Sounds like me and Drew." May replied. Robert chuckled a bit. "Yes, so I've heard, and seen on TV." Robert simply watched, though he didn't know what stakes Jake was facing. Not to mention watching Jake would give Robert some insight on how Jake's fighting style has grown.

"Scyther, use fury cutter...and this time, don't suck!" Scyther showed a look of annoyance on his face and casually ran towards Charmeleon. "Charmeleon, use fire spin!" Scott laughed, "Scyther, double team to dodge!" Scyther made absolutely no attempt to dodge his trainer's attack and instead dove straight into the fire spin. Jake realized that Scyther would much rather be with Jake than Scott which was why he wasn't trying to fullest potential. "Charmeleon, use fire spin again!" Again, Charmeleon sent fire at Scyther. "Scyther, quit sucking. Use double team!" Again, Scyther made no attempt to dodge and was hit full blast with the fire spin. "Scyther! Quit it and use night slash!" Scyther just stood there, waiting for Charmeleon to make another move. "Charmeleon, fire spin. Full power!" Charmeleon hit Scyther again with a fire spin attack, leaving him fainted. Jake gave Charmeleon a high five, he then sprayed Scyther with a hyper potion, nursing him back to health. Jake looked up to see Scott, throwing Scyther's pokeball at the ground. He then crushed it with his boot. Scyther was now a wild pokemon. "Here you go Cross, I promise I will take better care of you than him." Jake touched the pokeball to Cross and he was absorbed into the pokeball. It wiggled a little bit and then dinged, confirming the capture. Jake sent Cross back out and headed to his room for a bit more training.

Robert shruged a bit as he watched. He could see the Scyther had no intention of winning at all, or to obey his master. And with the way its old master was treating him, the kid seemed like Kira, only less violent and much less sychotic. "Well, looks like Jake's got himself a Scyther now." he spoke, looking over to May. "So how long will you be in Kanto for?" He asked. "Well, I'm going to be heading over to Pallet Town for Ash's birthday party. but don't say a peep to him about it, alright?" May asked. Robert smiled and gave a nod. "I didn't hear anything." Robert said jokingly before reaching up and scritching Lilly's cheek gently, causing her to lean in agianst it. "Your Kirlia really likes you." May said while petting her swimming Glacieon. "Well, she's been with me ever since she was an egg. and I'd say she and I are very close. but it's like they say. Your first pokemon is always the most special." he replied before getting up and out of the pool. Robert grabbed a towel and began to dry off. "I need to do a bit more training, and the pool's too crowded for me to work on Hogan and Mathias." May gave a smile and waved to Robert. "Alright. I'll see you at the dinner then." She called out to him. Robert picked up his clothing and pokeball belt, recalled Hogan and left for his room to get changed into dry shorts and put his dry clothing back on.

Back at the room, Jake sent out all of his pokemon and talked to them, polishing his egg at the same time, "Okay guys, I entered us for a battling tournament and a contest on this cruise. In order to be successful in both, we need to make sure that our moves are well polished and we're using them to our fullest potential...without overdoing it." The pokemon all nodded, waiting for further orders.
Jake turned to Charmeleon, "Okay Charmeleon, you know that new smokescreen technique we worked on? I'm going to add one last step to it. When I command you, I'm going to either say left smokescreen, back smokescreen, or right smokescreen. If I say left smokescreen, you will appear to the left of the opponent...your left. Right smokescree, you will appear to your left of the opponent, if I say behind smokescreen, you will appear behind the opponent." Charmeleon nodded. "Alright then, let's practice this. Cross, you go towards Charmeleon with night slash and I will tell Charmeleon where to appear. Once Scyther strikes and finds out you are no longer there, I will shout out an attack for you to use." They practiced this and got the improvement down within five minutes. Jake then worked on Charmeleon's fire spin with him, so that it was clear that he was shooting a spiraling flame at his opponent. He then made it so metal claw turned more of a silver color rather than a gray color and so that dragon rage was a deep, majestic purple color.
"Now its your turn, Gloom. What I want is for you to improve your acid attack into sludge bomb." After a half hour of practice, Gloom had mastered her sludge bomb attack. She bent over and shot several bombs of sludge at the wall. Poliwag then cleaned it off with a water gun. "Now, I really want you to learn sunny day. Its a really beautiful attack that will power up your synthesis attack and will add a shine to your other attacks. Honestly, there isn't much I can do to help you with this move so just kinda stand to the side and practice over and over while I train the others." Gloom stood to the side and Jake turned to Zubat.
"Okay Candra, I want to work on a small little combo with you. Its going to be called aerial ambush. What you will do is fly down and use poison fang on your foe. However, instead of biting and releasing, I want you to fly them into the air. Then, do a little bit of a flip and throw them at the ground and as they're falling, strike them with air slash. Its going to take a lot of strength so we're going to start with Jin." Zubat practiced for about 20 minutes and then was able to use aerial ambush on Jin with success. They then moved up to Gloom, and then Charmeleon. However, Candra wasn't able to successfully use aerial ambush on Scyther. "That's okay. When you evolve I'm sure the attack will be a lot easier. I'm proud of you and I think the attack is fine as it is." Jake then turned to Jin.
"Okay Jin, I just want to polish your attacks a bit." Jake worked on Jin's attacks so that the sound waves that emitted with hypnosis where much more visible and had a distinct rhythmic sound. He then worked on her water gun so that the water looked very clear, pure, and shiny in the light. Then, he worked on wakeup slap so that it looked a lot stronger and tougher. Jake then turned to his newest member, Cross.
"Alright Cross, the dex says that your attacks are double team, fury cutter, night slash, and quick attack. It also says that your movements are much like a ninja. Which would be quick and evasive. I want to work on a little thing to protect you from air borne attacks. Zubat, you are going to fly above Cross and use air slash on him. Scyther, I want you to use double team to avoid the attack." Scyther nodded and within one trial round, Jake saw that Scyther was already used to this evasive maneuver. Jake then worked on Scyther's quick attack, increasing its speed and making its look more appealing. It left a white trail behind him as he ran. Night Slash already looked how Jake had wanted it to look, tough, and fury cutter was exactly how Jake wanted it to be as well.
"Alright guys, let's take a rest until its time for dinner, okay." The pokemon nodded and Jake lie in his bed, polishing his egg. Charmeleon and Jin stood talking to Cross. Gloom sat in the corner, resting her eyes and drooling on the floor. And Candra flew happily above everyone.

Once in his room, Robert brought out all of his pokemon, with Hogan appearing in the small jacuzzi. "Alright, let's work on some tactics. Sable, I'm going to teach you a combination called Greased Lightning. What you do is charge in with quick attack and then used Iron Tail on your opponent. The name is somewhat meant to fool our opponents, thinking that we're going to use an electric attack. However, with your static ability, there's the chance you might paralyse your opponent during the attack. Lilly, We're going to work on your redirecting attacks. I'm going to have Sable try and hit you with a few weak thunderbolts, and I want you to use confusion to turn it around and send it back at Sable. Everytime you do it right, we up the power of the attack. Lotus, I've got a combination for you to try. It's called Painful Blessing. You're going to use Wish, then charge directly into an attack like thunderbolt and use tackle. By the time you hit your opponent, wish will come into effect and heal the damage you took." With that, all three were trained over the hours leading up until dinner, each one working hard until they got thier attacks down perfectly. During that time, Mathias and Hogan worked in the jacuzzi, Mathias on his water resistance and rapid spin and Hogan with swimming tackles. After a good several hours of hard training, as well as 90% of Robert's oran berries, Robert recalled all but the usual two to thier pokeballs. "Alright, let's head up for dinner." he spoke, leading Lilly and Sable to the main dinning hall where most of the other trainers were.

Jake returned all his pokemon with the exception of Charmeleon and headed over to the dining hall. He walked in and found that it was full of many large round tables with 21 seats around them. There was a sign by the door that read, "No more than two pokemon per trainer." After reading this sign, Jake sent out Cross, his new Scyther. He then sat down at a table with Ash, Brock, and Misty, and two girls Jake hadn't met before. Ash had his Pikachu and Sceptile out. Brock had his Sudowoodo and Marshtomp out. Misty had her Politoed and Seadra out. One of the girls had a Blaziken and a Glaceon out. And the other girl was sitting with a Prinplup and an Ambipom.
Ash looked at Jake and spoke up, "Oh Jake, I didn't know you were here. How are you?" Jake smiled at the table, "I'm doing good. Just thought I would use this cruise as a little extra training." Ash nodded, "Okay then, well you know Brock and Misty. But that is Dawn with her Prinplup and Ambipom. And that is May with Blaziken and Glaceon." They all said hello and May began to talk to Jake about the battle she had saw over Scyther. "Yeah," Jake said after explaining what the battle was about, "He was treating Cross as if he were useless. It wasn't right." Brock sighed, "Yeah, as we all know, no pokemon is useless." Dawn chimed in, "Except for Dunsparce." Everyone at the table laughed. Jake looked up and saw Robert at the door entrance, he waved to get Robert's attention so he could sit with them.
