There were no words to describe the exhilaration of simply falling. The battle of the two greatest forces on earth clashing to create an epic battle right on her body. The feel of gravity's overwhelming pull in contrast the rushing winds and air resistance that tried desperately to save her life. For the briefest of moments, she could forget her troubles, wipe the oblivious look of the village idiot off her mind as he unintentionally hurt her. Unintentional? How could anybody be so stupid as to only allow her to participate in the last event? Orika shook her head in midair, closing her eyes to block out the sight of that beautiful boy. Somewhere in her fall, she'd managed to tilt herself diagonally so that her head was partially pointed down. It was worse than hitting the water feet first, for now she'd probably skip across the lake like a stone with all that surface area on the her underside. She had to think fast. The best way to save herself would probably be to roll up into a ball and try a somersault. She thought about Maya who had gone before her and tried to copy what the girl was doing. Arms here. Legs there. Confident expression on her face and presto... She still looked like an idiot that got pushed off a cliff, rather than going off of her own free will. Gah, this was a lot harder than it sounded!

Had Ero-sensei said anything to help them? Streamlining, yeah that was easier said than done! Still, she had to try! Orika stretched out her body as far as it would go and arched her neck to try and get her head pointing directly down. Her arms were already pointing in a V-shape so all she had to do was to straighten her body. She could see the blue of the lagoon rushing up faster than an arrow. With a last ditch effort, the farm girl imagined she was pushing off a board and somehow managed to land not too terribly in the water. Regardless, Orika felt like she'd hit cement. The icy cold immediately choked off her air, its fists striking her head and chest hard. Orika flailed about until she found her head above water, panting for air. Wow... that was fun. That was the only thought pounding in her head as the blood rushed back to where it belonged. It was hard to hear anything over the roar of the waterfall. Orika blinked water out of her eyes and turned around to check on the status of the other competitors. The first person she saw was Karite, still happily searching for his fish or whatever Ero-sensei wanted them to find. As the water trickled down her tanned, frozen face, Orika could have sworn she tasted salt, but she was too angry to cry. She reasoned that the lagoon was near enough to the ocean that some salt had to flow in. Getting out of the water, Orika shook herself like a dog and stood up, still a little dizzy. She had the unfortunate task of finding a new partner now. The girl blinked the water out of her eyes and noticed Maya standing alone. Orika walked over to the girl and noticed the pearls in her sempai's hands. They were smaller than the ones she saw at the market, but still so pretty! "Wow..." the girl dumbly remarked, still dizzy from the dive. She regained her composure and with a grin, piped up and asked, "So, Maya. We're both partnerless. Wanna pair up for the last relay event? Come on!" Orika waved for Maya to follow her to the nets Ero-sensei had set up and took one of the balls in her hand. Maya would probably throw the ball too far and she'd never be able to catch it.

It was there! Kane could clearly see the rainbow glow of the oyster shell even though it was underwater. Resolving to make his breath last just a little longer, he lunged for it and was rewarded with an oyster. Uprighting himself in the water and kicking up with his feet, he finally broke through the water's surface and took a deep breath. Figuring that he didn't need the extra weight, he opened the oyster easily and took the pearl out. It wasn't a large pearl by all means which made it easy to hold... and easy to lose. Kane would have to be extra careful when swimming now. He couldn't trust his pockets; could only trust himself. It was at this time that he heard his partner shout encouragement in possibly the least enthusiastic way possible. Well, at least he tried. Before he prepared to dive down again, Kane looked up and flashed him a grin.
Once back down in the water he became aware of a presence following him. A slight turn of his body confirmed... Maya! He felt slight annoyance coast through him. It seemed that she was storing the pearls in her mouth and that it looked pretty full. He hoped that she wasn't following him with the intent to steal his loot. She was better than that. Frowning, Kane dove deeper and focused on even the slightest sparkle.

However he could feel Maya keeping on his heels. Kane's annoyance grew and he really hoped she wasn't going to do what he thought she was going to do. This competition was purely about physical prowess and not underhanded tactics after all. If sneakiness played a part, Kane was confident that he could manipulate the pants off enough of them to gain an advantage, after all. He continued searching without much luck, but then felt Maya coast away. Maybe she'd found what she wanted. Maybe she decided not to steal what was his. At any rate, Kane was glad for the reprieve, especially since it looked like she would finish much faster than him.

He continued to move across the depths of the pool quickly. It was at this time that he spotted the other kid that he knew as 'Shisei's teammate'. It seemed that he was having quite some luck too, which made Kane determined not to get shown up. Maya was fine, but if this junior beat him... even if, as Kane could clearly see from where he was, he was fitter and taller and what not. Forcing his concentration back downwards, Kane roved around for his prizes. He wouldn't surface until he found one.

Maya raised an eyebrow at Orika, turning her sight towards Karite, still in the water, and shrugging. She picked up the second ball and, without really thinking about it, launched it towards Orika...though her aim was WAY off. The ball soared over Orika's head, landing near Shinichi a couple yards away. High and slow, and Maya flinched slightly. That was really bad on her part...Maya rubbed her face and groaned. "Eh...sorry, Ori..." she said apologetically, a microscopic smile on her lips. She wasn't sure what else to say, so Maya just waited for what was coming next - Orika would throw, and she would have to catch. They would have to repeat it for a while, at least until they managed to catch it twice between the two of them...

But he was having no luck and eventually his lungs couldn't take it any more. He surfaced, taking a good deep breath, before almost instantly going back down again. His hair got into his eyes a good few time and Kane impatiently pushed it out, although he was aware of the futility of the gesture. Was there only a limited amount of oysters in this pool? Had Maya and that guy taken them all? Kane only had 1 and didn't want to be the loser of the group. His determination burned fiercer at this thought, no thanks to Shisei and his unenthusiastic support, but that was another matter entirely. He decided again to change directions and maybe even dig a little. Turning to his left now, so that he was almost at the middle of the pool bed, Kane reached for the sand and began to scoop.

He could only dig with one hand though, owing to the other being held up by things like protecting his pearl and all. Kane found it quite difficult to get used to balancing his body between digging and resisting being carried upwards, but eventually he got used to the rhythm of the undercurrent. It was a good thing that the pool was relatively still and the only thing disturbing it was him and that guy. Briefly, at the back of his mind, he wondered what Shisei was doing. He better get his butt down here pronto if he was serious about winning. Didn't they have to do some funky ball toss thing next?
Thinking and planning ahead was quite enjoyable whilst he persevered in his digging, but Kane knew when an effort was futile. He resolved to move if he couldn't find anything else after this last unearthing. He didn't want to miss even the smallest pearl - Shinichi hadn't said what sizes had he? - so he kept his eyes focused. The water stung his eyes a little and refracted light from different sources in a confusing way, but Kane was getting used to that.

"Woah!" Orika yelled as she ducked to ensure her head didn't get blown off by the strength of that throw. Luckily or not, Maya's throw was way off target and now she'd have to retrieve the ball over by Ero-sensei. The girl put on a smile and bounded up the walkway that led up the cliff to the man, but slowed to a jog when she was near enough to be struck by his lightning fast kick that would drive the ball right through her skull. Boy, she was imaginative today... Orika wasn't sure how close to get to the Kage so she made a weak wave and snatch the ball up before he could retaliate. In all that time, Shinichi only made a passing glance at the girl, then went back to apathetically watching the other students. Orika muttered a thanks and then sprinted down the cliffside and back towards Maya. "Not so hard, Maya!" the girl whined, then drew back her arm and gently tossed the ball so it barely soared over the net. It headed right for Maya, about a foot above her head so she shouldn't have much trouble catching the ball. Orika didn't know much about Maya's ball-catching ability, but she bet it was better than hers.

Unlike her throw, Orika's throw was a good one. Maya lifted her arm easily, catching the ball in her left hand then dropping it into her right. Not so hard .. ? Maya sighed, and shook her head. "Too rough, Ori ... I don't know how to not throw hard.." Maya threw the ball from hand to hand, each time throwing it harder and harder until the smack of the ball was audible, even to Shinichi. Maya didn't look at the kage, but instead stared down at the ball. How was she supposed to throw it so that Orika could catch it? Maybe if she rolled it...maybe if Orika gave her hints? "How do I throw it soft?" Maya asked quietly, her eyebrows scrunching together. She wasn't sure exactly what to do at all!

Karite heard a splash hit the water and only saw Orika in the water. His eyes almost popping out of his head at the pure site of her Soft skin in the water. At that moment he let out half of his air in excitement but quickly maintained himself. If didn't find another pearl and a new partner quick he was going to die here. That image was going to stick with him a long time to come. Regaining his composure he looked around only to see Maya snatch another pearl. "Damn it, it means I am behind." Karite was becoming frustrated again. He had to concentrate and with half the amount of air he had before. Finding one more pearl just became the hardest job he ever had.

Maya lifted her right arm about halfway and kind of flicked the ball over the net, wondering if it would help Orika at all, especially if she only used half her arm to launch the ball. But would that be too strong too...? Maya watched almost helplessly as the ball flew over the net perfectly, but was it too arched? Too high? Too far? With a small groan of disgust with herself, Maya rubbed her face and then studied Orika. Maya blinked - why not encourage the girl, right? "It's a little high...but maybe if you jump you can catch it, Ori," Maya said, and while it was obvious she was being encouraging, it was still a weird type of statement to be coming from Maya, considering she had been hell bent on slaughtering them last night upon their retun from the hunt. Maya's weak smile only made the effort that much more perverse in its twistedness, but even so, Maya did know how to encourage people...she was just super bad at it.

Although he couldn't be sure, he thought he spotted something. And a small chance was better than the even smaller chance he'd get if he moved away. Now he knew what looking for a needle in a haystack felt like. Marvelling at the difference jumping in first made, just those few tens of seconds, Kane continued to dig, sifting the clumps of sand through his fingers just in case an oyster of any sufficient size was there. At this point he didn't really care how big his pearl was anymore. Running his finger over his other reasonably-sized pearl, he was pleased by its smoothness. He was also reminded that he was running out of air... again.

Karite started stroking again his right hand tightly clenched as to not lose his prize. Maybe Orika would like them. They couldn't match her beauty, but for a poor wander like himself it was either steal something or make something. He liked the stealing idea but with Maya and Shinchi watching his every move he thought it would be more wise to not bring attention to himself. With sucj powerful babysitters the last thing he needed to do was get them on his bad side. Swimming forward he couldnt see anything. It seemed everything had been whipped clean.a

Kane knew being unfocused again in his search. But, let's face it, oysters were big, and if he managed to grab hold of one, he'd notice immediately. Thinking of other things would distract him from his imminent lack of air. Eventually, his fingers closed triumphantly around an oyster, and not a puny one either. This one had been buried especially deep, perhaps by the current itself or by the three shinobi's movements in the pool. Either way, Kane recognised that he'd have to continue looking by digging. But first, he needed air... the sustenance of life.
He powered himself through the water quickly but made sure not to surface too dramatically. His previous two surfacings had taught him that bursting out not only made you look stupid, but the sheer momentum from going up alone resulted in a moment of suspension int he air. This would be cool otherwise, but during times of hurry it was frankly a waste of time. Therefore he resisted emerging in such a fashion. Instead only his head appeared as he took in a deep gulp of air before going back down again. He had oysters to find.
