It was her. Maya's eyes filled with tears as she realized she knew this woman. Was this really the woman's destiny, then? Alone, with golden eyes that were not hers, powerful? Alone ... Maya fell to her knees, eyes unfocused. She would choose this, then? This woman would lose everything, and become a monster? No better than the Orochi monsters Maya had seen in the Orochi village, no control and no emotion. Rage filled this woman, and behind the rage was the power to decimate an entire village if she felt the need to. But this woman...
Maya felt tears run down her cheeks. The woman snarled at her, eyes narrowed and stance screaming that she was ready to fight. The dirty tawny hair was cropped unevenly, the minimal clothes and bare feet. The hundreds of scars across her body, the curved and sharpened blood-stained tekagi. Maya stared at the woman and found herself wanting to puke. Maya was staring...
At herself.

SHUGA!?
Baki lowered his head almost meekly as the beast woman grew in size...taller, taller, taller, until she was taller than the trees in the Forest of Sorrows. Her screams and scoldings echoed violently, so much so that Baki couldn't pick up many of the words because he had pinned his ears to his head. He did, however, pick up the words 'tame', 'baby', and 'meek'. And he, Baki knew, was NONE of those things! He would prove it! How? Well...he didn't know yet, okay!? But he would! He tried to open his mouth to let the giant beast woman know, but she simply kept talking and talking and talking...damn, did she really talk that much? No, in real life Shuga would just smack him a few times...even so, Maya wouldn't allow it. Shuga wouldn't really do it anyway...wait, Baki hadn't EVER done anything to call down Shuga's wrath. What kind of twisted dream was this!? Baki looked up again, only to see the clinic-woman standing before him! Oh man!

The older woman paused, realizing who it was she stared down at. Laughing a heartless laugh, the older Maya took a few paces until she stood before Maya herself. Maya, however, refused to look at the woman. She didn't even want to think of her as herself - she gave her the title of Monster. 'Monster,' Maya whispered, giving herself that much power back. Monster laughed again, roaring. 'Monster, am I? Funny, but when you let Baki die, I could have easily called -you- monster. What's the matter? Not so tough on your own? Look at me, I'm the strongest shinobi on Shimagakure. I'm stronger than Ichi no baka could ever have been! Monster? No, little girl. I'm powerful. What are you?' Monster stood over her, gleaming, truly proud of what she had said. Maya hiccuped and shook her head slowly. 'I would have never let Baki die...you're lying! You're lying!' Maya pushed herself backwards, landing on her butt and wiping her face. She was not like this beast! She would never be! Maya glared at Monster, and narrowed her own eyes. 'You aren't anything alone. Nothing!'

'Animals don't belong in clean places! Get out!' the clinic-woman screamed, and Baki was confused. They were in the middle of the....CLINIC!? Baki slipped on the smooth floor, his claws making sharp clicking noises as he tried to escape the horrid place. It smelled, as always, of illness and death, two things Baki didn't want to experience again anytime soon. And still, he couldn't run fast enough to get to the door. Confused, he turned to demand answers from the woman, before turning sharply again and pumping his legs as hard as he could - for behind him now stood the malevolent ANBU, Shinichi! Baki swore he would never catch squirrels for fun if he could just get away from the horde of shinobi who seemed to be totally and completely against him. What had he done, huh? Nothing, that's what! Baki couldn't get out of this place, and why?? This had all started with that weird flat-antler animal!!

Monster gave a wild smile and pointed her weapon at Maya. 'Nothing? Yet you ran to me because I have Baki's eyes. Kun'Kumo Kana was right. The Tategami merely use animals until they cannot fight anymore, then we kill them and use them some more. Didn't you know?'
Maya screamed. 'LIAR! AUNT SHUGA WOULD HAVE NEVER HURT RESA! I'LL NEVER HURT BAKI!!!' Maya scrambled to her feet, running blindly away from this monstrous woman that she did not want to become. The tall plain-grass scratched her face, the bodies on the ground cracked as she scrambled over legs and arms, torsos and heads. She sobbed, running as hard as she could - the monster's cackles rose in the distance, and Maya felt sick to her stomach. She fell, the sensation in her stomach making her want to deposit her insides right then and there. Sobs heaved out of her body, and she tried to maintain control again. There had to be another way! But back towards the two people she didn't know? Well...it had to be better than what she had just faced.

Baki could hear Shinich behind him, and turned to give the man a dirty look...only to be further frightened. Shinichi had turned into a giant poisonous leech! Now those!? Baki couldn't catch a break!! Mentally groaning, the lion scurried faster, relieved to see the doors getting larger. At least he was getting closer to getting out of this nightmare within a nightmare! The fever had affected him more than he thought! Baki knew, though, that he didn't want to get caught by the leech, even if it was a dream-leech. It would probably still hurt, and Baki didn't need any reminders about it - especially since this leech was Shinichi-size, and the other ones had only been a few inches big at most. A leech that stood almost six feet tall? Well, the sucking power on that sunnova...on that thing had to be tremendous....ly painful. Baki's legs started to hurt just from thinking about it!!

Maya stood, rubbing her eyes and searching the area around her. There....not more than a few hundred yards away were the other two shapes...but now there were more of them. Cautious, Maya began to jog slowly towards them. She began to pick out some of the other shapes that appeared, the two original ones slipping towards the back of the whole group. In front, tail swinging as though nothing were wrong, was...
Baki. And behind him, Shisei...Shin, Xyn, Karite, Serena, and even Orika. Behind them, Aya, Kana, and Kazuma. Sukotto - Shuga, Mai, Shinichi, Ichi, and Yuki. Tomoko and Dhan, everyone from ... home. Maya's eyes welled up with tears. The two original figures were gone, but Maya had an idea of who they might have been. 'Ma...Pa...' she whispered, speeding up and crashing through the tall stalks of grass before tackling Baki and being smothered in hugs by the people all around her. This was what she wanted - this was what she chose. Maya knew she was a recluse, she knew she disliked being around people...but Baki wasn't a person, and at least she had the small comfort of knowing that if she should ever need one of them, she could find them...
An almost visible sense of ease fell over Maya's sleeping body, and she stopped quivering. Her body relaxed, warmed by Baki and the furs around her.

And now Baki was at the beach. HUH? Shaking his mane, the massive lion simply sat and stared out over the massive frozen ocean. Wait...what? The ocean didn't freeze! Salt water wasn't supposed to freeze, that's why none of the animals in the water froze to death in winter. How strange, then, that this ocean was completely and totally frozen. Even part of the sand were icy, which was even stranger. How had he gotten here again? Hadn't he just been...somewhere else? Boy, Baki was having a rough time around Shimagakure! Confused, he looked around and saw a fish. Dinner? No, this fish was his size, standing next to him, leaning on a stick and sighing. 'What's wrong?' Baki asked. The fish replied, 'The ocean froze while I was grocery shopping, and now I can't get back into my house. How very selfish of the ocean.' Baki blinked, unsure of how to answer, and turned his attention back to the frozen expanse. Come to think of it...that WAS pretty selfish...

'How rude of the ocean, then, fish-san,' Baki said thoughtfully, and with a crash, great chunks of the ocean began to break apart. How? Why? Well, it didn't matter. 'It would seem you can go home-' Baki's eyes turned and rested not on a fish leaning on a stick, but on a slim, slender girl who was older than she should have had to been. He realized, too, that his words were no longer words, but the comforting growls he had always used around Maya. Home, then? Baki stood and turned towards the village, instead finding that the ocean of salt and ice had turned back into the ocean of gold he had grown up in. Baki felt a great weight lift off his shoulders, a weight he hadn't realized was there to begin with. Maya, silent as usual, tugged on his ears and combed through his mane, her presence comforting. This was her home, and so it was his - though Baki knew if Maya ever wished to call another place home, that place, he too would accept. At least here, Shinichi didn't turn into a giant leech and chased him around, because then he would go insane. With a lion's chuckle, he sat with Maya and simply basked in the greatness of the grounds.
His immune system finally finishing what it had started, Baki began to snore lightly, his blood cooling a little - for a lion's blood never truly ran cold. Hot-headed and easily excited, Baki slept easily - with luck, he would be normal by morning.

Karite came in running at top speed he came to a sliding stop kicking up snow. His hands were so cold he could barely move his fingers. And the blood on his bandages were frozen. Looking around he saw no one. Maya must have been out with Baki training or killing something. Without thinking Karite sucked in a lung full of cold frosty air. "Kore, lets go! We got a fight to get to." Noticing a small figure rise out of a snow patch Karite fought his urge to laugh. "Come on Buddy lets head somewhere a little warmer." Picking up his Jo Karite smiled as he held it firmly between his freezing fingers. Starting to run again Karite looked behind him and clicked his jaw. Kore learned quick what all Karite's movements meant.
Kore heard a loud familiar voice from a good friend. Looking up from the slight pile of snow that had covered him he saw Karite. Getting the look in his eye Kore was happy to see him especially since he spoke of a fight. As the boy ran off the cub began to move quickly as his black paws repeatedly disappeared in the snow and reappeared with every step. Moving almost as fast as Karite the two moved silently through the light blanket towards the farm for clothing and maybe some new bandages.

Karite. Gone now, but still.
Maya shifted, groggy. Her face was still warm, but she felt able enough to sit up and rub her head. Yuck...her nose was running. Otherwise, though, the nauseating feelings she had before were gone. That was good, at least. And Baki seemed to be sleeping well, Ruha curled up into his mane. She chuckled, rubbing her arms. She needed to visit Mai, and she did have fresh pieces of venison the woman would enjoy. She couldn't get clothes for free, after all. Sneezing, Maya placed Ruha in a fur and wrapped her up, patting the cub's head and tugging on Baki's mane. He, too, had a fever, but otherwise seemed to have warmed up nicely from their near scare. He growled and rolled over, shaking and eying the entrance of the tent. Maya chuckled, nodding, and exited, quickly picking up the largest steak she had left uncut and a small bowl of sliced pieces. Holding them carefully, she motioned with her head - Baki left the tent, and following Karite and Kore's obvious footprints in the snow, they headed towards Mai's home on the other side of the village.

Maya and Baki strode into the grounds, immediately heading towards the larger tent and heading inside. Mindful of the inside of her tent, Maya spread an old leather over the ground, worn and almost useless, and lay Kore gently on it. With the leather, she began to clean the blood around Kore's dark neck, frustrated that the blood matched the fur almost evenly. Damn...Swearing, she began to wash his fur with a cloth dampened from the snow, growing angrier and angrier every time she had to resoak the cloth and strain out the dirty water. By the time the blood she cleaned off was minimal, the snow outside the tent looked like the battleground for a vicious battle. With the bandage she swiped from the clinic, Maya wrapped Kore's neck gingerly and then wrapped him in a heavy fur to maintain his body temperature. Ruha was mewling and curled up instinctively against her brother, and Maya rubbed her head, wondering how best to maim the three academy students...Tenko had better show up, too, since Maya knew lion wounds could be severely bad for people who weren't used to them. Her own shoulder was healing moderately well after Baki's piercing bite, but she had grown up with the lion. Orika was definitely the worst off out of the three.

Tenko ran into Maya's living arrangement, very confused as to why the genin wanted to keep Kore's injury a secret. But she saw no reason to breach the girl's trust. When Tenko saw the blood pool around the injured lion club, she gasped. The little thing looked like it had been attacked by a wild beast. Maya had wrapped up the dark cub's wound, but she could see the blood soaking through. "We'll have to get him to the clinic, Maya," Tenko said meekly, not wanting to upset the already frazzled girl, "He may freeze out here." She picked up the cub and pressed on the wound to help stop the blood flow, then unwrapped the bandages again. She took a closer look at the wound and realized that the narrow slice could only be caused by a human weapon and looked up at Maya with wide eyes. "What happened to him?" Tenko whispered. The nurse replaced the bandages and stood up with the lion in her arms, ready to take the poor guy to the clinic where Kore wouldn't freeze to death.

Maya scowled darkly - but Tenko was right. The grounds were cold, even if they were in a tent. With a small nod, she allowed the nurse to carry the cub, and hesitated in answering the question. The fire in her eyes building again, she shook her head. "Academy students were fighting with real weapons...and I just know Shinichi-san is gonna find out...I'll go get them. Orika was hurt bad, and Karite had some injuries too. I'll drag them to the clinic if I have to." Giving the nurse a slight bow of her head, Maya loped back towards the rice farm, grateful for the clothes she wore that now kept her warm. Her head was still light though, and she turned slightly, calling back towards Tenko. "An' if you happen to have any medicine for a bad cold...it'd be helpful to me an' Baki." She gave a curt wave, and went back to retrieve the trouble makers that Shinichi would be sure to skin alive, Baki close at her side.

Kore began to stir through all the commotion. Not fully conscious but enough to move he began trying to break free. The lose of blood was causing intense nightmares in the poor cubs sleep. All he could see for miles were hunters. His mother was dead his sister was gone and no one was there to protect him. Karite was not there Baki was not there even the two jungle women Maya and Shuga were not there. It seemed that all was lost for the cub. He might die here as well. He had to run though. He wouldn't give up. Pushing harder against the woman's chest Kore began to struggle. It was a weak attempt for someone who was drained of life at the moment but the dark cub was eager to break free. Nothing seemed to work. Snarling a bit his lips began to quiver showing more and more of his fangs that were just beginning to grow in. Kore was in trouble if this wound did not stop bleeding soon. He was on the edge of his rope and it was beginning to show. The cubs tie with his partner had slowly been growing weak and now it was severed. Both lay bleeding far apart from each other. On the outer reaches of death. Was this the fate of a team like no other, or was this just another story for the two tell down the line.

"Oh my!" Tenko shrieked as she listened to Maya tell the story of three future serial killers. "D-don't hurt them too badly!" she called after the girl stormed off after casually asking her for cold medicine. What was with these children? Tenko felt the cub struggle in her arms and saw another red mark form on the bandages. She needed to get him to the clinic for stitches. The woman reached into her back pocket and pulled out a sedative, then plunged it into the fighting cub's rump. He would only injure himself more with all the flailing. Tenko waited until the cub fell asleep and then hurried back to the clinic, watching right and left for Shinichi. The man wouldn't hesitate to kill the four for disorderly conduct.

Maya arrived at the grounds, where Baki promptly entered the larger tent and curled up to sleep. He was tired....and probably cold. Unlike Maya, he didn't have a warm new coat. With a small smile, Maya studied her 'old' tent. It wasn't as big as Shuga's...well, hers now, but that was irrelevant. It was big enough to let her and Baki sleep comfortably, and Baki was worth Orika and Karite put together. Hm...she could expand it just a little bit, with a fur as a partition to separate Orika from the boys. Studying and sweeping the snow from the ground with her food, Maya used one of the newer leathers in her new tent and draped the large chunk over part of the tent, expanding it easily and pegging it in place despite the permafrost on the ground. She looked inside - very roomy now. Small as far as stature - they wouldn't be able to stand up inside, but kneeling would be fine, as well as sitting. Maya fetched a fur and made the small separation for Orika, then went to her own tent. They wouldn't be back for tonight, that much Maya assumed, and she was tired. They would figure it out if they came back, anyway. Though, Maya was sure Tenko would keep them overnight at the very least. And now that Shinichi knew...well, she was off the hook, and she had three minions to train in such a way that they would never want to train again...

Maya awoke early, feeling considerably better than she had yesterday. Sniffing, she realized her sinuses were clear, and her fever was gone - even without medicine from Tenko. At least she hadn't wasted it then. With a small smile, Maya looked at Baki, who was snoring still. No need to wake him - he would probably get in her way while she tried to soak the hides she started the dawn before. Stretching, she poked her head outside and stepped out, warm even though snow coated the ground. She picked out the furs she had prepared the day before and then looked around. There was an empty barrel she could fill with water, and since it was better for it to be cool, she could throw some hot stones inside of the barrel and simply melt the snow until it was a reasonable temperature. Heh...perfect.
Soaking and Cleaning the Hide (Soaking and Cleaning the Skin) Soak the hide in a large container or barrel of water, preferably cool water, for one to two hours. Afterwards, scrape the skin side with a dull kunai to remove any grease or extra tissue.
