Sokra shuddered again. His eyes looked somehow hollow as he looked at her. "No." He shook his head. "No. Would you be?"

She shrank a little, then regained her composure.
"Can you stand?"

Sokra nodded. "You should stay away." He whispered, struggling to his feet. "I had to fight myself because... because I am afraid of myself." he fingered his golden collar. "I have an infenction. The collar has a spell of protection. My mom..." He looked at the sky. "She insisted, years ago, to look at it. She's been sick since. I tried to give the collar to her but she refused... She's gong to die soon. I don't want that to happen to you, or anybody else."

"An infection?" Lyu squinted at him in confusion. "What kind of infection?" Inside her head, wheels turned like demons, trying to prevent her from remembering. An infection...sickness...death..so familiar... No, she couldn't quite grasp it. Her mind would only let her go back so far. Only back to living on her own, stealing, saving for something... But she could not remember what she needed the money for. She never had been able to.

"Demonic, of some sort." Sokra tried to laugh but his body wouldn't let him. "I was mauled, 12 years ago, by a major demon. It gave me a bite on the neck, vampiric almost, and I have been carrying the sickness ever since." He looked at her. "What's the matter?"

Lyu had only heard the first part of his answer. She had fallen to her knees, holding her head in her hands. She'd glimpsed a face, drawn up from the dregs of her memory. It had triggered so much pain that she was almost screaming from it. The blackness of the inside of her eyelids twisted and whirled back into the face, which turned from the loving smile of a young man to the grim visage of a gaunt skeleton. This time she did scream, a tortured cry of pure anguish.

Sokra knelt down, horror showing on his face. "LYU! LYU!" Not now, not now. Why now????? Why ever???? Sokra lamented, holding her. He hated how her memories tormented her so. "Lyu..." He whispered.

(Aw...that one was sweet...)
Lyu looked up into Sokra's eyes, recognition slowly pulling through her memories. She shook her head, hard, and surfaced from the nightmare-like memories that held her tight. She had almost remembered it all...so close...but it hurt so much to even think about it. She'd almost remembered a name...a name to go with a skeletal face. She blinked furiously, and tried to stand. She slipped back down to the florr. She smiled sadly.
"I...I'm sorry. I don't know what came over me. What were you saying?"

Kamiss blew out a sigh of relief. "Demon. Mauling. I think we had better get out of here, before... more Kant are spawned or... you have another attack." He held out his hand to pull her to her feet.

With a grateful nod, Lyu accepted his hand and stood. She was still a little wobbly, but most of the terrifying memories had fled, so she felt much more stable. She shook the hair from in front of her face, and sighed.
"Where to?"

Sokra sighed. "I don't know. Maybe my house?" He looked towards the sea. "Somewhere safe." He muttered under his breath, hoping she would not hear.

"Alright." She cracked her neck, left then right, wincing at the loud noise she made.
"Need me to scout ahead? I just need to fly right now, so I could scout and...release some tension...at the same time. Is that alright?"

Sokra nodded. "That's fine." In fact, he was grateful for it. He started walking in no general direction, thinking. Too much is happening too fast. He sighed, and shook his head, turning his eyes to the sky to look where Lyu was flying.

As a hawk, the world held no ties to Lyu. She twirled among the cloud, each beat of her powerful wings sending her cutting through the wind like a blade of a knife. Though she could not erase what had happened, she knew now that she could deal with things as they came. As long as she could change, be more than a weak human, she could handle anything that came her way. She dived with a cry in front of Sokra, then lifted again, hovering.
Which way should I go?
Another of her powers - to enable speech without words.

"I thought you had a place in mind." He murmured, then lifted his head. "My house, I guess." Sokra turned east and started walking in the diretcion of the distric he lived in. His mind reeled, trying to understand this new turn of events. She collapsed when I told her about my mauling... could she have had anything to do with it? I don't think she was responsible.... but what happened? Does she know somebody else who got attacked?
