Carella's eyes widened at the story of an injured rider impressing a bronze and her heart swelled with hope. Maybe one day she could stand and watch as one of her own kin rode on the back of a dragon. Such a thought seemed like a dream, too much to hope for, and any thought of herself as being a possible candidate was lost. Until of course the question was worded by Orana.
"Oh no, I certainly don't think I have what it takes to impress one of those little beauties." She shook her head, curls dancing around her face. "I was brought to the Weyr because of my gifts as a tanner."

Orana smiled at Remia "Your welcome and I wish you well. Good luck when time comes if you wish to continue on with it." Her adoptive father had high hopes for her to become a dragon rider and to keep at her craft. Orana was able to do both she knew it.
"Firelizards are the Rare gems of Pern." she grinned proudly. Malathan chirped happily at the comment and beeing compared to a gem, then cooned. Orana scattched her eye ridge affectionatly. "I belive anyone can impress if they are pure of heart." She smiled "It is not what's in your head that counts, it's your heart they look to. Or well thats what I belive" Orana began to turn red. She didn't know if the others under stood or belived her feelinga bout it. She was worried they thought her strange.
Ithean Nipped at Orana because she was suddenly red. He cocked his head to the side and chiped once more in an understanding. This made orana feel better a little but she didn't know what the others thought of her... But she held to her belief well and would not let them go.

Ariath had continued to lay her precious eggs as Weyr-folk gathered to watch the sight, but with each passing egg she carefully hid it from view. The queen was determined not to allow anyone a peek at the growing population. Swirling facet eyes would glare at anyone who drew to close until the gathering people discovered what the queen was comfortable with when it come to distance. Ephia, L'cian, and Tallith were the only ones able to approach her in some form or another but even they had gotten looks form the queen if they drew on her nerves.
Finally, after candlemarks of laying, the queen looked to her rider before sweeping her massive wings away from the clutch she had protected from sight. She did not move form her comfortable location on the sands, but uncurled her tail just enough so that all her beauties could be seen.
--------------------
Ephia, at one point had sunk to sit as her legs grew weary. She quite enjoyed the time with the Weyrleader and the other Weyr-folk of the Weyr.
I am finished.
The words took a moment to sink into the Weyrwoman's tired brain but once the voice and meaning registered Ephia was up in a flash, leaning over the waist high wall in frotn of her to gaze at the newly revealed eggs. Quickly she began counting, looking to L'cian only once to see if he was also trying to tally up the eggs. After a few minutes of counting and recounting she smiled.
"38. I counted 38 eggs!" She looked to L'cian. "38 eggs!" She was completely beside herself and before thinking she let her emotion run rampant had firmly kissed L'cian's lips before pulling back to gaze at Ariath and Tallith proudly. "There's no queen egg, but I hadn't counted on one. 38 more dragons for the Weyr will help strengthen the wings greatly."

Orana turned her head instantly as the great Queen lifted off to show her hard work. Orana gasped. Malathan lifted off Orana's arm and perched beside Ithean Chriping happily, They both looked at the large clutch. Orana watched amazed "38 Eggs" She repeted in awe "Look Remia, Carella"
Orana looked at the large clutch, this would help the Wyer emensely. But how many would be canidates. 60? Orana wondered would she be able to impress a dragon? With her great hope came great doubt but she remained self-confident of herself and her heart. Orana noticed no queen egg but that was alright there where so many Eggs there already!

Lemurrin nodded thoughtfully, rather tired after all the excitement. A voice in his head made him jump. "She's done!" he whispered to Kalya, poking her shoulder. "Shells, look how many!" He stood up, trying to see over people's heads. "At least 30, I'd say," he remarked after a quick count.
Grenna and Brownie zipped between, peered at the clutch, and popped back before Ariath could notice them. The silly flits bombarded Lemurrin with visions of eggs-- any number between 10 and a few dozen. The harper swatted at them playfully. "Yes yes, there's a lot of eggs. Now scoot before the queen notices you!" With a disconcerted chirp, both fire lizards went between again, presumably to gossip with others about the Large One and her clutch.

Rafaelle heard the cry of '38 eggs!' and stopped dancing looking for a moment at the large, beautiful golden queen laying out on the sands, curled about her clutch. And in those 38 may be my lifemate. . . she thought wistfully, sighing as her hopes rose. Turning to Talon, Heroe, and Xilias, beaming up at all three of them with her eyes and face aglow.
"Oh, I hope we all Impress! Wouldn't that be great?" She asked this, her face blithe and innocent.

Remia was about to respond to Orana when she heard the call of the egg count.
"Thirty-eight! I didn't expect quite so many! That's amazing!"
She smiled at her two companions, and then looked out to the eggs now revealed on the hot Sands. She bit at her lip, wondering, and wistfully hoping, but she didn't voice anything out loud. She kept it secret in her heart of hearts.
Or she would have if anyone had not been looking at her face. She never could keep her emotions hidden.

Heroe stopped her song in mid note, hearing an echoing voice before anyone had started to yell. Her eyes shimmered when she heard, hope filled her heart. She put her flute away for the moment before Hugging her friends tightly. She blushed slightly when she hugged Xilias and Talon but then shook it off and ran toward the Weyr Woman. Great new found determination in her eyes. Now this was the time to present to her her song.
"Weyr Woman... My name is Heroe of Sea Hold, I am one of the canadates, please do not be angry with me for intruding on you, but I've been waiting for the right moment to give you my gift, a song written only for you and your queen. If you wish it, I will play it for you now, or later when you feel less tired."

Nestren heard the whisper before Kirana did and jumped up with excitement. "Did you hear that, weyr-sister? Thirty-eight eggs to be paired up with! I am bound to Impress at least one! Of course only one! I don't even know if there are that many Candidates yet!"
He continued on for sometime with his rants, knowing like all little brothers did, that she would tolerate his rant. Nestren was excited beyond comprehension...it was possible that the other half of his soul was out there waiting for him. Trying not to clap his hands and bounce with joy, he looked over at Kirana and waited for her response.

Naree Emoraan gave a slight bow to the Weyrleader. His eyes dancing with the praise, although his face was most somber. "There will be many times to feel proud, young Weyrleader. And yes I may call you young, considering my turns. But, just remember that pride alone can not sustain you."
He looked over the crowd and gave a slight huff. "I shall have the new vests lined as quickly, but as confidently as possible. I will not let you or your weyr down. Though right now, I think it is more Ariath's weyr than anyone else's."
He chuckled at this. "Yes, I think I'm just starting to realise that." He said quietly, for pride in itself definately wasn't enough, but for now it would be and L'cian would indeed be content. He nodded and glanced at Emoraan with a smile, reaching up to pat him on the shoulder. "I have no doubts, you'll get the job done well...and yes definately Ariath's Weyr right now."
~~~
Tallith had begun to calm from his protective stance now, body relaxed as he stayed close to Ariath's side, eyes keeping a close watch on the weyrfolk who were flocking around them, buzzing with excitement and apprehension.
All the while his beautiful queen had kept her eggs hidden from view, their number secret from everyone; perhaps even herself - although he doubted that greatly. She was a wily gold indeed. Raising his head he rolled his eyes upward, a crooning of amusement emanating from his throat. It wouldn't be long now!
Then it happened, the gold spread her mighty wings and Tallith bellowed his excitement emanating from both himself and his rider who had also stopped conversing to see what the fuss was about.
~~~
L'cian had not moved to sit during this time, standing beside Ephia as he patiently waited, heart hammering in his chest. He too had enjoyed this occasion much more than he had expected he would and felt indescribable.
Tallith's roar alerted him and he too began a frantic counting as he guessed many others would be doing too. There looked to be a lot and that was enough to satisfy his curiosity whilst he let his eyes scan the precious unhatched dragons.
36....37....38!
Ephia's confirmation of this came almost simultaneously and her enthusiastic way of showing her joy was altogether welcomed by L'cian. A smile gracing his face as he moved to stand closer beside her, one arm moving to snake around her waist and hug her closer to him.
"38 dragons is an amazing amount, a number achieved only by the best queen." He said with honesty, "This will no doubt strengthen the Weyr and bring the high spirits everyone needs."
~~~
Carella nodded, standing beside her two new friends as she gazed out at the shining eggs. Beautiful. Her eyes were alight with wonder and her face was flushed with joy. "thirty-eight..." She repeated in a breath, "they look so pretty." She moved a hand up to brush away stray curls of hair from her face. "I never knew how big they were! This truly is going to be a wonderful occasion."
Thirty-eight eggs! What a clutch for such a wonderous queen! Congradulations to you both...I suppose this means I can expect to lose some of my apprentices and journeymen."
The MasterWeaver looked at the gold and an idea started forming in his head. A gold dress for the Hatching would be suitable, yes. But where to get the colors from...gold was not the easiest one to create. "Your dragon inspires me, Weyrwoman. I think you shall have a new dress for the Hatching."
Emerald orbs danced from her queen to the Master Weaver. "A new dress you say? Well that would certainly be happily accepted. An event such as the hatching would be perfect for some new attire, especially for the feast afterwards." She smiled warmly before her attention was drawn to the girl on he rother side.
Her smile never fading Ephia sat down on a seat behind her gesturing to the young harper. "Well Heroe, let's hear this song of yours."
"I shall have to excuse myself from your presence, m'lady Ephia. Please make sure to stop by the WeaverHall so that I may make sure that your measurements have not changed. That way, I may also show you and L'cian the vests that I have been working on."
Giving a bow to the Weyrleaders and the queen dragon, MasterWeaver Emoraan made his way from the sands back to his craft hall. He would have to speak to Moranis and see if the boy had any good suggestions for making the color gold. The boy had a knack for such things, something he must have picked up from his mother.
Sighing, Emoraan tried to quell any thoughts of his deceased wife. Now was not the time for sorrow, it was the time for joy.
Nestren watched as other Candidates began to leave the grounds. He was sure that there was something going on...tapping his chin with his index finger...he looked at the eggs again...
"By the First Fall I forgot about lessons!"
He shouted this as he jumped to his feet. Tugging on Kirana's hand, he tried to pull her up. "Come on, you know how many eggs there are...come and listen to the lessons. Just in case..."
Too excited to tug on her anymore and not wanting to be late, Nestren dropped her hand and ran off in the direction of the Candidate barracks.
