"You know... I never asked Keinal. He always kept to himself even when I was younger." Kallista sipped on the hot klah blowing the steam away gently. Follar had calmed down considerably and was now back to exploring the table.

Pushing back her long hair, the runner looked around and smiled at her new friend. "It must be nice to be able to stay someplace for a while. At the most, now that I am a runner-apprentice, I stay at the station for a fortnight."

"Hmm... It's not fair that boys get so much more of a choice, you know? I mean, Lemis knew he'd inherit the hold, but Jemmun and L'mur got to choose. L'mur was going to be a harper, and well, now, he's here." Jess sighed, blowing her hair out of her face.

"But me? I get to be married to some holder's son. Oh sure, I'd be able to pick someone I at least liked, but.. What if I wanted more? I was only allowed to come down here because L'mur asked specifically." The girl made a face, trying hard -- and failing-- not to rant. It was nice to have someone lending a sympathetic ear.

Az queeped and hopped onto her shoulder, wrapping his tail around her neck. "Thanks," she muttered to him. "At least he doesn't expect me to do anything I don't want to do, as long as he's properly fed and made much of!"

"Why can't you go to a Hall? Most families are honored to have some sort of Crafter in the family. If not a Harper why not a Weaver or a Tanner?"

Kallista was thankful that she was not holdbred. Her father had no intentions on marrying off a good runner who made him money. He had no use for land when he owned his own station. Follar now sat meticulously cleaning his claws and giving his own opinion in a chirp here and there.

Smiling, the runner girl patted the other girl -her friend- on the hand. "This is a new Pern. We should be able to control our own destinies. Or so my father says."

"Well, if I have my way, young lady, you'll be staying here longer than all of that, and not just because you're L'mur's sister." Siran had been feeding her young green firelizard, Beryl, who had decided that it was very important to wake her partner at odd times with sharp creeling sounds.

The little one had taken to sleeping on her pillow, so she heard those sounds very well. When she heard the turn the conversation was taking, she decided that the girls needed a bit of encouragement. Or at least, Jessmet did. She knew the girl a little, having been the rider who brought her over.

"Very right. It is a new Pern." She smiled slightly. She liked that the young women in the Weyr (both of it, and visiting it) spoke their minds. It was quite refreshing, given that a number of holder girls that she had encountered during past searches were anything but thoughtful or imaginative.

Jess sighed again and sat up primly. "Because it's my 'duty to the Hold' and all that nonsense." She made a disgusted face. "And I'm the only girl, and the baby of the family. Mother wanted to keep me close, I suppose. I don't blame her, really, it's just.. frustrating." The holder girl squeezed Kallista's hand and smiled.

"Thanks. Your father is right, and my parents know it, they really do. At least I was allowed to visit here..." Jessmet's voice trailed off and she took another bite of (now cooled) bread. "Oh! Hello, Siran, didn't see you there." She perked up a bit at the greenrider's presence. "And thanks for the vote of confidence."

Siran chuckled. "I'm hardly ever seen, when I don't want to be." She smiled wryly at Jess. "You have everything to be confident about, as your friend has said. There's much to do in Pern... and little time to waste coddling children who don't want to be coddled."

You do not coddle me enough... Tiranth complained. Oh hush, you. You are not near a child. Nor a dragonet. In point of fact, the green was beginning to act quite moody. The chargined rider had long since concluded (long being relative) that she would have to put up with her dragon's mating habits soon enough.

Kallista looked up and gave a slight bow. "Hello rider Siran. Thank you for your compliment. I suppose I am lucky being born of the craft. It is different between you and I. I am the youngest and the only girl as well. But I do not have to worry about settling down for a long time."

Folalr went up to the rider's fire lizard and began to utter a series of chirps and meeps. Walking around the green, the little blue puffed up and tried to look very important.

Laughing outloud at her flit's behavior, Kallista was happy to be so at ease.

Beryl gave a sharp little squeak, and preened herself, wrapping her tail firmly around Siran's neck. "Oh dear... now you've done it." The little green would be hard to settle down after such a show. She seemed to be aware of both the bronze and the blue, and for all of her fussing, pleased by their proximity. The green rider was relieved that at least little bronze Az was behaving sensibly. "I don't believe we've been introduced. What is your name, miss?" Inwardly, Siran cringed. The firelizard's little claws were sharp on her shoulder now that she was looking around alertly.

Az had also decided it would be a good idea to show his "importance." He flitted his wings, cocking his head to the side, and offered Beryl a leftover crumb.

Jess giggled, rather relieved at the distraction both Siran and the firelizards presented. "Siran is friends with my brother, and was the one to fetch me from up north," she explained.

Siran gave a little noise of dismay as Beryl reached over, and delicately accepted the crumb from Az. The little green was showing off! The rider pinched the bridge of her nose as though warding off a headache. "Firelizards," she said in a long suffering tone. Her own firelizard was settling her wings quite decoratively, as though trying to express exactly how amazing a creature she was. "It is as though I have a Tiranth in miniature."

Follar hissed at Az and continued to strut back and forth in front of the green. His wings were out and the flit was trying to puff up and look very important.

By this time, Kallista was heartily laughing at her fire lizard's antics. Wiping the tears from her eyes and grabbing her fellow by his neck, she tossed him on her shoulder and attempted to tell him to behave. Follar squawked at her and began to chitter angrily in reproach.

"I am runner, Kallista. From Master Byrad's station near Meka Hold. I come here fairly often on runs since my brother went up North to train. It is a pleasure to meet you, Siran."

Az squeaked at Follar. The blue had been his friend until just a moment ago! gonk He chirped again, then flicked his wings back in a huff. At least Beryl had noticed what a fine and handsome boy he was.

Jess suppressed a snort. "Az!" she scolded, "Stop showing off!" She rolled her eyes at Siran and Kallista. "Have some more meatroll and be good, or I'll send you off to Ofira!"

The bronze queeped and settled down, the threat of the queen firelizard a bit too much.

Far from being upset by the blue and bronze's behavior, Beryl seemed mightily pleased with herself. The green continued to preen, as though secretly rebelling against Siran's wishes. Siran had tried to keep her little green from showing off, but it seemed that the young one had other ideas. After all, Az was a bronze, and Follar was paying such nice attention to her.

"Please, the pleasure is mine. I may have seen you once or twice before, but I've been busy running errands for the Weyr, for the most part." The firelizard's eyes whirled faster as she flitted down to the table, and began to pick away at a meatroll. "Agh. I thought that raising a dragonet was hard work. Tiranth never postured so. At least, not at such a young age."

Follar looked up from his scolding at Az's chirp of concern. Seeing that the bronze was settled, he hoped off of Kallista's shoulder and picking up a piece of food from her plate walked over and dropped it in front of Beryl. Eyes whirling happily, he chittered in his best voice.

"I am tempted to toss him back into the wild," Kallista muttered at his antics. "Or tie him up with some cord. He is overly proud of himself for a blue... Sometimes, I think Follar thinks he is a bronze. You were probably too busy with your duties to notice a mere runner. But I must admit my father's station has the best reputation in the area. We go everywhere except to Southern. Perhaps they mature faster since they are smaller?"

Beryl chirped, looking up at Siran for approval. The rider sighed, and nodded at the little firelizard. Approval granted, she ate a bit of the piece of food. The friendly (perhaps overly so) green did not wish to discard the offerings of her new companions.

"Oh, I doubt tossing him into the wild would work. I hear they come back if you set them free." She half smiled. "I'm positive this little one got her attitude from my dragon, who thinks she is a queen." She heard a sleepy reproach from Tiranth, but apparently the green's sleep was more important than a distasteful remark. "I believe they do mature faster." She tried to remember if she had seen the runner before, and found that she had, at least, seen her once before.
